The Morgan girls basketball team invaded The Nest, as the newly built gymnasium at the brand new Wasatch High school is called. The Trojans made themselves right at home, stinging the Lady Wasps in a non-region game on Tuesday December 21 by a score of 52-27. This annual game is usually very close and competitive, but the Lady Trojans jumped out to a quick lead and were never threatened. After converting a layup off the opening tip, Morgan pressed and stole the ball, swinging it to Ashley Garfield along the 3 point arc in the left corner. Ashley got the shooters bounce to go after the ball bounced high off the rim, off the top of the basket, and through the net for a quick 5-0 lead. Ashley would convert a coast to coast layup on the next possession, and when Shaelee Pentz gathered in an offensive rebound and converted the put back, the Wasps were forced to take a time out, down 9-0 after less than 2 minutes. Things went from bad to worse for the home squad, as Pentz knocked down back to back 3’s, one from 2 steps behind the arc on the left angle, and the other from the top of the key, as Morgan rolled to a 15-2 lead. Turnovers were the only thing to slow down the Trojan attack in the quarter, which saw Morgan up by 12 points, leading 17-5 going into the 2nd period. Play was stopped for a moment in the 2nd quarter to switch balls, as the girls had played the first quarter with the larger and heavier mens basketball.(Editorsnote: It is funny when the Harmam Globetrotters do these tricks.) It didn’t seem to matter which size of basketball was used, as the Lady Trojans continued to pour it on the home squad with a variety of hoops by Pentz, Garfield, and Rachael Johnson. Morgans’ lead was 30-12 at the half. The Lady Trojans would outscore the Lady Wasps by a score of 22-15 in the second half to win going away 52-27. Team stats would show Morgan making 21-40 field goals for 52.5%, 5-7 3 pointers, and 5-8 free throws. Morgan out rebounded Wasatch 28 to 16, forced 23 turnovers and scored 30 points in the paint. Spud Garfield again lead the way with 22 points (8-14 shooting), 8 boards, 6 steals, and 5 assists. Shaelee Pentz made 4-6 baskets including 3-4 from 3 point land for 11 points and added 5 rebounds, Rachael Johnson added 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, and Rashel Blazzard scored 7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Senior co-captain and 3 year starter Becca Rees has a torn ACL in her knee as a result from an injury vs. Richfield last Friday. She will be rehabbing the knee for a few weeks, and then make a decision as to whether surgery will be needed. Lets hope for a speedy recovery for Becca. Freshman Shaylee Duncan is also battling a knee injury and has missed several games this month.
