The Morgan Lady Trojan basketball team began it’s 2nd round of Region 11 battles with two road games, the first against Ben Lomond on Thursday January 27 and the second against Grantsville on Tuesday Feb. 1. Both games were blow outs in favor of the visitors, with Morgan beating Ben Lomond 71-30, and then thumping Grantsville 76-16. Against Ben Lomond, senior forward Ashley Spud Garfield was virtually unstoppable against the Lady Scots defense. Scoring 28 points and hauling in 18 rebounds in just three quarters of play, Garfield would score from all over the court on layups, long range jumpers, offensive rebound put-backs, and drives to the hoop. The home squad tried several different defenses, including a box and one to try to slow down Garfield and her teammates, having minimal success at best. The Trojans would lead 32-17 at the half with Garfield scoring 18 points, including a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line. The Trojans would put the hammer down in the 3rd quarter, going on a devastating 25-6 run to put the game out of reach. Spud would score 10 of the first 12 points in the quarter for the Trojans. Senior point guard Becca Rees would go for 5 points in the quarter including a long 3 from the left baseline, senior forward Rachael Johnson would score 4 including a steal and a coast to coast layup, and freshman point guard Rashel Blazzard would turn a couple of steals into 4 quick points at the end of the quarter to push the Morgan lead to 57-23. The forth quarter would belong to the Morgan subs. Freshman forward McKenzie Schenk came in to score a quick 10 points on 3 nice mid range jumpers from the baseline a layup and a couple of freethrows to help Morgan win 71-30. Besides Spuds big game, Rees would finish with 12 points, Blazzard would score 6 points and dish off for 6 assists, and Johnson would score 4, add 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Against Grantsville, the Trojans would push out to a big lead of 19-4 in the first quarter, despite playing a bit ragged with missed layups and turnovers. Five different players would score in the quarter for Morgan, as the outmatched home team struggled to keep up. The Lady Trojans would continue to pour it on in the second quarter, again scoring 19 points, but this time Grantsville would score just 2 points. Morgan would lead 38-6 at the half. It was more of the same after half time, with Spud Garfield, Becca Rees, Rachael Johnson and Chelsey Stegelmeier leading the way. Final score was Morgan 76 and Grantsville 16. Garfield would lead in scoring with 17 big points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Rees added 13 points on 4 of 5 shooting, including 3 of 4 three pointers. She also had 7 steals and 4 assists.
