MHS Senior Trojan wrestlers were honored at their final season match last Thursday at Morgan. The meet opened in the darkened gym, literally with a spotlight on five seniors escorting their parents to the center mat. Jake Anderson (son of Molly and Brent Anderson), Christian Winn (son of Brad and Johanna Winn), Jose Patino (son of Refugio and Sara Patino), Colton Walker (son of Tara Lamon), and Tyler Carter (son of Tim and Jana Carter) were recognized as outstanding athletes by Head Coach John Kelly and others. After the Senior Night opening ceremony, the senior wrestlers took to the mat and one-by-one dominated their opponents from Ogden High. Colton Walker, 113 pounds, opened with an impressive 21 Ò 7 technical fall over Ogden’s Aaron Smith. Christian Winn, 126, and Jose Patino, 170, earned commanding victories by pinning their opponents Dontray Carpenter and Dan Boydston. Tyler Carter, 160, had to sit out due to an injury. Jake Anderson, 138 pounds, crushed his opponent Ken Burton with a decisive 20 Ò 4 technical fall. The seniors, along with the rest of Morgan’s varsity team, gave the Trojans a final season win over the Tigers, 49 Ò 18. Coach Kelly was obviously pleased with the match and says he looks forward to building upon the strong tradition of great Morgan wrestling into the future. He comes to Morgan as the new head coach after wrestling for Alta High School and then BYU. The post-season regional tournament will be held in Tooele on February 4. Thanks to the coaching staff and wrestling moms for organizing a spectacular Senior Night.
