All year, the Sterling Scholars have been preparing for the culminating event which took place this Tuesday at Morgan High School. Sterling Scholars compete against students from other schools in their respective categories. They are judged on their scholarship, leadership and citizenship. This year, Morgan had the rare opportunity to host the Northeast Utah Region event, a big undertaking with 15 schools participating. The region includes Morgan, Rich, Summit, Wasatch, Duchesne, Dagget and Uintah counties. Across the 15 categories Morgan was represented very well with four outright winners and nine runners up. Congratulations to the following seniors for their academic achievements this year: The four winners include Bryan Smith, who is the Business and Marketing Sterling Scholar; Katelyn BraithwaiteÓWorld Language; Lauren CasperÓSocial Studies; and Laura DeruÓFamily and Consumer Sciences. Runners up include: Candace GunnÓInstrument Music; Tyson LindleyÓ Technology; Shaylee EwingÓDance; Collin GibbÓVocal Performance; Rebecca PetersonÓMathmatics; Elizabeth StauderÓScience; Ellissa ClarkÓSkilled and Technical Sciences; Chase NielsenÓSpeech, Theater Arts and Forensics; and Brayden LarsonÓVisual Arts. The Sterling Scholar program was developed by Deseret News and the KSL Broadcast Group to recognize Utah’s High School Seniors for their outstanding achievements. Since 1962 this prestigious honor has been awarded to high school seniors who exemplify something pure and valuable, which the word sterling denotes. Through the program, scholarships and tuition waivers are given out to students who excel not only in academics, but who are also involved in activities and service in their local communities.
