At the close of this week’s Morgan City Council meeting, Councilman Fran Hopkin tendered his official resignation. Hopkin has served on the council since May 2014 when he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Councilman Ray Little, who had just accepted the mantle of mayor. Hopkin was then re-elected in the most recent November election.
Hopkin conveyed his apologies to the council for serving such a short time after his election to the office, as it was not his intention to leave. “Had this been even an inkling of an idea at that time, I would not have sought reelection,” he said.
Hopkin has accepted a position as the Utah State University registrar, which means a move up north to Cache County.
In light of Hopkin’s resignation, there is now a need for a replacement. The council has 30 days to replace Hopkin.
Residents of Morgan City can submit letters of interest to the Morgan City offices by no later than July 18.
Councilman Bill Cobabe added, “We are pretty heavily dominated by a particular gender and I would highly encourage qualified female candidates to apply. It would be nice to have a female voice on the council.”
