Although the game wasn’t the marathon 25-22, 37-35, 28-26 match that the Lady Trojans played last year in Smithfield, the result was still the same. The Lady Trojans opened their season with a win over 5A Sky View 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21. The Lady Trojan started well and jumped out to a quick 19-5 lead before the Bobcats realized what hit them.
“The girls really came out well. They were ready to play. They passed well and were on fire,” Coach Liz Wiscombe shared.
Defensive specialist Dani Wortman and setter Ellie Anderson served well early in the match, with Wortman serving three aces in a row. Anna Cox hit strongly out of the middle and led the match with 15 kills. At the 22-11 point, Morgan’s libero Hannah Farr made an amazing one-handed save to continue play and score the point.
“Sky View is a good blocking team. They are tall and play very well. It was a great team to start off the season,” Coach Wiscombe noted.
The Lady Trojans wrapped up the first game 25-16 and moved to the second game. Morgan played from behind most of the second game. Service errors and bad passes kept Sky View in the lead 5-9 and 11-14 before Morgan tied the game at 16-16 on a stuff block by Marcie Stapley. Unfortunately, the Lady Trojans were unable to pull out the set and lost 23-25.
“Our second game wasn’t great. We have a number of service errors and if you can’t serve the ball, you can’t win the game,” Wiscombe concluded. “In the third and fourth games we settled down and played.” Morgan ended the game with 17 service errors and an overall 82 percent service percentage.
The Lady Trojans took the next two games to come away with the 3-1 victory. Cox led with her 15 kills, and Baylee Loertscher followed with nine. Brookelyn Hurlbut added eight and Stapley contributed five kills. Anderson and Wortman both served four aces for the match with Anderson hitting 91 percent of her serves. Anderson, the sophomore setter, had 39 assists including several dump sets that caught Sky View off balance and led to points for Morgan. Cox led the blocking with four with Stapley, Loertscher and Hurlbut adding two each.
On the defensive side, Loertscher, Farr and Cox led the serve receive with 19, 14, and 13 apiece. Wortman dug up 12 balls and Farr 11 followed by Loertscher with eight and Hurlbut and Anderson with six each.
Morgan played at Northridge Tuesday and the JV and sophomore teams will travel to the Davis tournament Thursday and Friday. The Lady Trojans will face the Lancers in Layton on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and host Bear River on Thursday, Sept. 8 in their first Region 11 game.
