Morgan capped off a busy wrestling week with a third-place finish in the Bobcat Brawl at Sky View High School in Smithfield. Every Morgan wrestler had the chance to wrestler a number of bouts in the event that included seven other teams: Viewmont, Highland (Idaho), Preston (Idaho), Sky View, Mountain Crest, Logan and Alta.
The varsity wrestlers earned third-place with Viewmont taking top honors and Highland beating the Trojans by one point, 37-36, in their dual to take second. The JV team placed second behind Box Elder (who wrestled in place of Alta’s JV). Five wrestlers finished the tournament with undefeated records: McKay Belinski (V-160 lbs), Chase Trussell (V-220 lbs), Antonio Nava (V-145 lbs), Taylor Bearnson (JV-120 lbs) and Cass Giles (JV-138 lbs). Belinski (160 lbs) and Trussell (220 lbs) pinned all seven of their varsity opponents for perfect tournament records while JV wrestler Bearnson (120 lbs) won six by fall and earned his seventh victory by tech fall 19-3. Giles recorded five pins, a 16-1 tech fall and one win by forfeit. Nava earn three victories by fall, a 17-2 tech fall, a 13-4 major decision, an 8-4 decision and one forfeit. Congratulations to all of the wrestlers and the team on a great performance!
The Trojans wrestled Bear River and held Senior Night on Wednesday during their last home match of the season. Morgan will compete against teams from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Washington in the highly competitive Rumble at Utah Valley University Jan. 20-21. They will finish their regular season on Jan. 25 at Logan.
Varsity Results: Viewmont defeated Morgan 46-26; Morgan defeated Mountain Crest 63-15; Highland defeated Morgan 37-36; Morgan defeated Sky View 45-33; Morgan defeated Alta 63-6; Morgan defeated Logan 62-14; and Morgan defeated Preston 78-6.
JV Results: Morgan defeated Viewmont 46-33; Morgan defeated Mountain Crest 53-30; Morgan defeated Highland 49-30; Morgan defeated Sky View 50-18; Box Elder defeated Morgan 54-24; Morgan defeated Logan 60-18; and Morgan defeated Preston 53-21.
Wednesday Morgan traveled to Nephi to face the Wasps. The home team prevailed 53-24 over the Trojans. Carlos and Antonio Nava and Trussell each pinned their Juab opponents and McKay Belinski got the forfeit at 160 lbs. The JV team also lost to Juab 32-6 with Montana Cragun scoring the lone pin for the Trojans.
Morgan swept Juan Diego 30-0 in a Region 11 meet at home Tuesday night. Coach Dustin Rock was very pleased with his wrestlers’ efforts. Joseph Mecham (113 lbs) pinned his opponent in the third period after being down 4-7. Chris Payne (106 lbs) won by decision 8-6. Bridger Butterfield (152 lbs) and Chase Peterson (170 lbs) both pinned their opponents. Antonio Nava (145) won by tech fall 22-6 and McKay Belinski was victorious by major decision 10-0.
“I am excited about how we wrestled tonight and looking forward to the next few weeks with the big tournaments and our last home match. We are wrestling and working hard to prepare for each match,” Rock continued.
Braving -20 degree weather and two feet of snow that closed all of the schools in Cache Valley for the day, the Morgan team traveled to Ridgeline Jan. 5 for a Thursday night match up. The varsity won 45-34 and the JV prevailed 59-35. In the varsity match, Morgan had six pins and a forfeit as well as a victory by decision. Ridgeline got four pins, a forfeit and major decision. Cass Giles (138), Antonio Nava (145), Chase Trussell (220), Dillon Petty (285), Chris Payne (106), Jarrett Jorgensen (113) and Carlos Nava (132) all earned six points for the team! Alex McFarland (170) got the 7-3 decision for the victory.
Ridgeline had a large JV team and some of the Morgan wrestlers had multiple matches. Montana Cragun (113 lbs) pinned three opponents, and Mecham won his first match by major decision 15-3 and his second by fall. Taylor Bearnson (120 lbs) won both of his matches—one by fall, one by major decision 16-7. Weston Stegelmeier (220 lbs) and Nathan Peterson (170 lbs) both pinned their opponents while Holden Petty (126 lbs) and Kris Ware (106) were 1-1 on the evening.
