Harvey J. Porter, formerly of Henefer will celebrate his 100th birthday this week. He was born July 12, 1911 in Salt Lake City to Warren W. and Susan L. Florence Porter. He married Faye Nielson on September 30, 1935 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Active in sports, he was a member of the Utah State Championship Semi-Pro baseball team from Devil’s Slide in 1940. In 2000, he and his brother Francis were named most valuable players on the Morgan County All -Century Team.
He worked at Ideal Basic Industries (currently Holcim) for 41 years while living in Devil’s Slide. After retirement, he moved his family to Henefer where he lived until March of this year. He currently resides at The Family Tree Assisted Living Center in Morgan.
For the better part of 30 years he has been giving bubble gum to the local children and adults when he can get them to take it, and has affectionately been given the name “The Bubble Gum Man.”
His children are as follows: Larry Porter, Layton, Utah; Donna Porter, Ogden, Utah; Barbara and Dale Mountz, New Garden, Ohio; Allen Porter, Morgan, Utah; His wife Faye, daughter Peggy Jones, and a daughter-in-law Nancy Porter are deceased. He has 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren with a 24th on the way, 9 great-great-grandchildren with a 10th on the way as well.
He will celebrate with his family at a special dinner. All family, friends and neighbors are invited to attend an open house held in his honor at The Family Tree Assisted Living Center at 862 East Mahogany Ridge Rd.
