Alumni band plays tribute to band leader

The only presence of Dr. K. Earl Ericksen, this year at the Weber State University Alumni Band Reunion would be through photos, music and in the spirit of reminiscing.

Dr. Ericksen was a regular attendee at the WSU Alumni Band Reunion, held injunction with WSU Homecoming festivities. He organized and was the band leader for The Junction City Big Band, since 1987. His son, Steve Ericksen announced just a couple of weeks ago, that the Junction City Big Band will continue to play on, though Dr. Ericksen, passed away at his home in Mountain Green, earlier this year.  “He was a good support and one of the conductors,” stated Sandi Coxe, WSU Alumni Band Committee Chairman. She said, “People would come to the reunion to see him.”

The evening before the homecoming game, there is a band rehearsal and social. The social there’s a dinner and a slide show, and there is a room  in the WSU Alumni Center, they displayed band memories; souvenirs, scrapbooks, news clippings, and posters. This year there was extra memorabilia of Dr.. Ericksen. Photos with him in his Army Uniform, his early years at Weber State with marching band, jazz band. and with his fellow colleagues.

 Before the WSU Homecoming Football Game with Idaho State, on October 15th, the WSU Alumni Band played a medley of Dr. Ericksen’s favorite songs. The medley called “Big Band Spectacular,” combined 14 songs from the Big Band /World War II Era.  Coxe listed a few of the tunes,”Racing the Moon; Sing, Sing, Sing; Chattanooga Choo Choo; I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, and Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.”  

 The name ‘Ericksen’ will still be in attendance  at Homecoming through his son Steve and granddaughter Audrey, who both play instruments in the Alumni Band. The band not only plays in the pre-game activity,but they sit along side the WSU Marching Band and play along to “Weber State’s Fight Song”; “Celebration”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and other songs,  as well as cheering the Wildcats on to victory.

The WSU Alumni Band Reunion was organized 11 years ago, through the help and financial support of the Weber State University Alumni Association, Coxe said, “we couldn’t do it without them.”
