Unit 576 (consisting of the Troop, Team and Crew of the Highlands Ward in Mountain Green, Morgan North Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) conducted their combined Eagle Scout Court of Honor with their normal Court of Honor at the Highlands Church Building on Oct. 2. Cameron Winn, Star Scout in the Troop, conducted and the flag ceremony was performed by the Troop’s 11-year-old patrol under the direction of Jaxon Fowers.
The Scouts receiving their Eagle rank advancements were D. J. Bigelow, Travis Forsyth and Tyler Trantham. Bishop Kelly Lane opened the Eagle Court of Honor by having all the Eagle Scouts present sit in the “Eagle’s Nest.”
A live eagle demonstration with “Freedom” the eagle (presented by Debby Peterson from the Hogle Zoo) was the evening’s highlight. Andre Malan, Venturing Crew advisor, and Troy Toone, the young men’s president in the Mountain Green Ward, presented the Eagle Awards.
Highlights of the Scout Law that each of the Eagle Scouts have demonstrated over their scouting career was done for D. J. by his mother Donica Bigelow and Carl Hipwell, D. J.’s scoutmaster; for Travis by his mother Terry Forsyth and Rick Barnes, Travis’s Varsity Scout coach; for Tyler by his grandmother Helen Wallace and Andre Malan, Tyler’s Venturing Crew advisor.
This was a very revealing ceremony demonstrating how these young men were living the Scout Law and deserving of the Eagle rank. The Eagle pledge was given by Bishop Lane and the Eagle challenge was given under the direction of Andre Malan assisted by Scott Cardon, Sid Creager, Bart Smith and Scott Standing, who are all Eagle Scouters in the Highlands Ward.
Cameron then opened the regular Court of Honor with the troop awards given out by Carl Hipwell, scout master, and Mike Webster, assistant scout master for the 11- year-old patrol. Rick Barnes, Varsity Scout coach, presented the team awards. Four advancements were made, 13 merit badges and 27 Varsity Athletic Pins were presented.
Bishop Lane presented the “On My Honor” Awards, the religious award for outstanding service in scouting, to Andre Malan, Venturing Crew advisor, and Carl Hipwell, Scoutmaster. Earlier in the program, Liz Miller, Scoutmaster for the Wood Badge Course for the Trapper Trails Council, presented Dr. Scott Cardon his Wood Badge scarf and beads.
A video presentation “I AM AMERICA,” a patriotic hymn sung by Todd Allen Herendeen, was shown by Dave Orn, also an Eagle Scouter. It was a very inspirational conclusion for a well attended court of honor ceremony for our deserving Venturers, Varsity and Boy Scouts. Opening and closing prayers for the combined awards ceremonies were by Rose Bigelow, D J’s Grandmother from Vernal, Utah, and Allan Terril, Travis’s Grandfather from Southern Nevada.
