Enrollment for the 2014-15 school year is officially open for Utah Connections Academy (UCA), a tuition-free, virtual public school that offers high-quality online K-12 education to students statewide.
Utah Connections Academy currently serves 720 students throughout Utah, offers students an individualized approach to learning and combines state-certified teachers, an award winning curriculum, technology tools and socialization opportunities. Interest for online education continues to be on the rise in the state as requests for information about UCA increased by 71 percent from 2012 to 2013.
Virtual schools appeal to all types of students, and families are choosing them for a variety of reasons. According to a 2013 third-party survey of parents of students enrolled at Utah Connections Academy, the top reasons for choosing an online school include: wanting a change in the learning environment from their current school situation; the desire for a more flexible school schedule; and wanting to be more involved in their children’s learning.
According to Utah Connections Academy Principal Linda Harless, it’s extremely important for families considering full-time virtual schools to attend one of the school’s online or in-person information sessions or parent-to-parent meetings, which take place in a more casual setting.
“Families really get a feel for what to expect and what’s involved in online education so they can determine if it is the best fit for their child,” said Harless. “Planning ahead and understanding how it all works is essential to ensuring the academic and emotional success of students enrolled in a virtual school.”
Utah Connections Academy’s information sessions cover a variety of topics, including the school’s program and curriculum, how teachers interact with students in a virtual environment, social events such as field trips and clubs, and other relevant topics. Because Utah Connections Academy is a virtual school, it is available to K-12 students who reside anywhere in the state. As a public school, there are no tuition fees to attend.
