Language arts teachers from both the middle school and high school met with Christelle Estrada, Language Arts Specialist from the Utah Office of Education, on Nov. 29 to receive training and insight to assist with the implementation of the new Language Arts Common Core. From this, the teachers planned and shared resources to meet their goals.
The new Common Core Standards are scheduled for implementation during the 2013-14 school year.  The standards have a strong emphasis on writing logical arguments based on substantive claims, sound reasoning, and relevant evidence.  The new standards also assist with reading comprehension and enable students to gain more from their reading experiences.
This training will continue throughout the year as teachers implement the strategies and refine student learning objectives.  Under the new Professional Learning communities Model teachers in all disciplines will collaborate and plan on a regular basis in an effort to enhance student learning across the curriculum.
