In the Morgan City Council meeting this week, City Attorney Gary Crane reported that the State of Utah has established a canal safety commission and is considering taking action on canal safety.  After canal problems that have caused loss of property and life, the state is considering ways to improve safety, including potentially a water tax, a tax on new developments, or the state approving any new developments that take place next to the canals.
Crane communicated to the council that the county’s establishment of a water board was being evaluated as a best practice in the state that might be used elsewhere.  He indicated that the council should keep track of the progress on this commission and provide input as they come closer to decisions and recommendations for legislation.
