The Morgan Trojans just claimed their third region championship. It is unusual for a team to be able to make such a claim, but what is even more astonishing is this Morgan team has never lost a region game, winning 32 straight. This varsity team is the result of talent, friendship, heart and determination.
Friday night they battled Juan Diego knowing they needed a victory to avoid a tie for the region title. Juan Diego started with a quick 5-0 lead, but a shot from Hunter Stanford and a three-pointer by Matt Murdock brought the Trojans into the game.
Then the battle was on with both teams fighting for every shot. By the second quarter both teams were in the double bonus and out of character, the Trojans had five turnovers. Juan Diego’s Gabe Colosimo made a three-pointer and tied the score 25-25. For the next play, Morgan’s Matt Murdock shot his second three-pointer to move the Trojans into the lead with 2.12 seconds left in the half.
Morgan had a tough third quarter as they continued to turn the ball over. By the end of that quarter, they were down 41-48.
In the fourth quarter Morgan’s foul shooting was a life-saver as the team was fouled time and time again. The score was 59-59 with 4.7 seconds left in the game. Juan Diego had a chance to win with a foul shot, but missed and put the game into overtime.
Late into overtime the Trojans took a three-point lead and Juan Diego had the ball with a chance to tie. Morgan’s Garren Miles stole the ball at half court to seal the victory.
Final score Morgan 72 and Juan Diego 67.
“It wasn’t our cleanest victory, but this win was great! All the guys on the team didn’t want to share the region championship, so we worked really hard this week in practice. This was a very big game for us,” said Morgan’s Hayden Garfield.
Matt Murdock, Bridger Streadbeck, Garren Miles and Ben Saunders all scored in double figures for the defending 3A State Champs.
