During the Utah Valley University Forum on Engaged Reading, Dr. Douglas Gardner of UVU presented the Morgan Elementary second grade team a $500 “For the Love of Reading Innovative Reading Program Award” prize to be used for the continued development and sustainability of their classroom efforts.  The teachers were also recognized for innovation in engaged reading and literacy instruction during a banquet at The Chateaux Deer Valley on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Implemented during the 2011 school year, the second grade “Power Hour” focuses differentiated instruction across the grade-level in an effort to meet the individualized needs of beginning readers.  Out of three school-level awards that evening, the second grade teachers were featured for their willingness to recognize a need, work together to create a solution, use data to track progress, and adjust the solution as necessary.
