Local artist John Pincock shares his passion for art not only with the students he inspires each day at Morgan High School, but also with the community as well by producing and selling beautiful handmade pieces of pottery. Ironically, while growing up in West Valley, Pincock was not particularly fond of art class. Throughout his time in elementary and junior high, Pincock found he had a hard time compressing 3D objects into two-dimensional projects. That all changed when he enrolled in a high school ceramics class.

The winner of the Daughter of Utah Pioneer quilt was announced at the opening social of the Morgan Company on Tuesday, Sept. 17.  After the meeting, where every camp was represented, a special drawing of the winning ticket took place.  This year the winner sat among the “daughters” and was surprised as her name was announced.  Carol Tonks (pictured, holding her newly won quilt), is a long-time resident of Morgan and as a daughter, serves as treasurer in the Mt. Joy Camp.  Congratulations, Carol!

If you happen to be a lover of Morgan High School, parades, volleyball and the color pink, then Oct. 3 is your lucky day. The Morgan Lady Trojan volley ball team will play their fourth annual “Pink Night” match, with proceeds going towards cancer research.

Young Ford is bringing Ford Motor Company’s Drive 4UR School program to Morgan High School at 344 E. Young Street on Friday, Sept. 27 in an effort to raise up to $6,000 for education in Morgan.

Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) announced today that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be headlining the Utah Women’s Conference the Senator and his wife Elaine have co-hosted for 27 years.  The Conference, “Discovering the Diversity and Unity of Women will be held on Friday, October 11, 2013 at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

On Sept. 16, the Morgan Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers held its monthly meeting and heard from Tom and Terry Wadsworth Warne.  Terry was one of the youngest prisoners of war from World War II.  She originally came from Morgan and was a granddaughter of President Richard Frye, the second president of the old Morgan stake.

 “This was our busiest opening we’ve ever had,” said Blane Smith, owner of the Morgan Pretzelmaker location as well as 16 others throughout Utah and surrounding states.   This is Smith’s first Pretzelmaker outside of a mall and the first in a small town, which brings a lot of unknown possibilities and excitement.

JR Hopkin is excited about a lot of changes in his future, most of all a new baby to arrive in early October.  In addition to his bundle of joy, Hopkin plans on a change of occupations.  After 8 years of serving Morgan delicious cooked-to-order burgers and fries, Hopkin has decided to hand the torch over to someone else.   Hopkin plans to sell Steph’s to local businessman Blane Smith. This will be the first time since the business has opened in 1957 that someone outside the family has owned the establishment.

Questar Gas is requesting a decrease in its Utah natural gas rates. If the request is approved by the Public Service Commission of Utah (PSC), the annual bill for the typical residential customer will decrease by about $10 beginning Oct. 1.

Lesli Jensen has now lived in Morgan for three years and continues to be grateful for living in such a beautiful valley. In the short amount of time she has lived here, she has been able to have a big impact on the lives of many Morgan residents. Through her two business, Essential Wellness Massage and Sunshine Dreams (a Sewing and Crocheting business), she helps others relieve tension, feel better, finish projects and learn new skills.

Saturday, Aug. 30, was an exciting day for Morgan residents Cameron Jones and Chad Peterson.  Having traveled to Loveland, Colorado, to compete in the High Plains Regional Finals in team roping, their years of training and practice paid off.  Cousins, Jones and Peterson participated in the #10 Shoot-Out and took home the win along with the pot of $10,082, a pair of Martin Trophy saddles, and $6,000 in USTRC Flex earnings which will help send them to compete in the United States Team Roping Championships National Finals.

Friday the 13th might prove to be a lucky day for Morgan residents with a taste for salty or sweet snacks and meals.  Pretzelmaker is set to open doors to delightful smells and tasty treats at 10 a.m. at the newest location on State Street in Morgan City.   It is located in the north end of the former bus garage, where it has undergone a transformation into a tantalizing establishment.

Morgan County Search & Rescue members were recently invited by Wasatch County Search & Rescue to participate in a joint training exercise involving water rescue and recovery.  This training was conducted at Soldier Creek Reservoir and involved both the Wasatch County dive boat and their new Sonar equipped boat.  Also involved were dog teams from Great Basin K9 Search & Rescue that are utilized not only on land for searches, but are also capable of using their skills on water rescues.

On Aug 19, 2013, the Morgan Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers held its monthly meeting at Larry’s Chicken Inn in Morgan City.  The Inn served a wonderful chicken dinner.

The Morgan Lions Club, the oldest continuously serving service club in the county, held its installation program for the new 2013-2014 officers. The meeting was held Thursday evening, Aug. 13, in North Morgan when Lions and their wives met for a wonderful meal and meeting.

Each week Kevin Eubank and the KSL Weather team select a photo of the week to feature on their nightly Eyewitness News on Channel 5. Local photographer Christian Peay was not only selected for such but was also chosen as the winner of the best picture of the month. Part of his prize package will include having his winning photo showcased in the July section of the 2014 Les Olson Calendar.

“Dig Into Reading” is the theme for the next family fun night at Morgan County Library, which has also been the theme for 2013 summer reading program. Librarian Valerie Hancock explained, “The evening’s event will represent both the quarterly family fun night and the summer reading program’s closing activity.” It will be held on Monday, Aug. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

I want to share with you a local business that provides a relaxed atmosphere, great customer service and quality of life, all while providing a desperately needed service to our community.  Unfortunately, this business won’t be patronized by many Morgan residents for many years to come and then it will be under difficult circumstances.

The Young Automotive Group has added a new dealership to their company with the purchase of Carrigan Motors, in Morgan, Utah, on August 1, 2013. The new dealership will run under the name of Young Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

When you live in a small town, soccer can be pretty competitive. The kids love to play and they love to win, which is what makes this story so touching.
Jackson Sommers was born with cerebellar atrophy, which happens when the cerebellum is smaller than normal or has atrophied from a previous state. Jackson had an MRI at 10 months old and by the time he was 2 years old, his cerebellum had atrophied to 40 percent of what a normal cerebellum should be.

The second annual Milton round up brought past and present Milton residents together to celebrate the community and to unite residents of the oldest area of Morgan.  Pioneer day was an appropriate day to join in celebration at the Milton Park.  At the peak between 450 and 500 people attended; but with five hours of entertainment, families were coming and going throughout the evening.  Many, however, enjoyed the full night’s events.

The Morgan Musical Theater Camp worked hard for two weeks on their show “Wild, Wonderful, World of Walt Disney.”  Each of their dedication showed during their two performances at Morgan High School on July 19 and 20.  Parents, families and friends flocked to the auditorium to watch the actors sing and dance on stage.

On July 15, the Sons of Utah Pioneers held an outdoor picnic at Riverside Park. Andrew Skinner, a noted historian and author from Brigham Young University, was the guest speaker accompanied by his wife Janet.

The Morgan County Council, Wasatch Front Regional Council and the Utah Transit Authority will be seeking public comment on transportation options in Morgan County.  Some options would require an increase in sales tax.

All across the world people are affected by cancer in some way and Morgan is no different.  It seems that around every corner there is another tragic story.  For this reason, the community rallies in support of the annual Relay for Life event.  This year the event will begin August 9 at 6 p.m.

During the time that George F. Rhodes was bishop of the Milton Ward, the Morgan Utah Stake was granted permission on Jan. 19, 1959, to build a new ward building in Milton.  Ward members were asked to contribute one-half of the cost of the building and labor to supplement the labor supplied by building missionaries.

A large group of Morgan children have eagerly been going to school every day for the last two weeks.  While spending two hours or more a day with teachers in classes at the high school may not sound like what every summer breaker wants to be doing in July, these children have gladly done it; some as young as 4 years old.

Emma Loo Bell was born on June 22, 1923, at home in Morgan.  Over the course of the next 90 years, Emma Loo travelled the canyon many times making comments how she thought it would be fun to ride in a semi-truck.  For years she thought it would be fun to sit up high and be able to see more.
