A little over six months ago David and Michelle were anxiously fundraising for their young son, Austin, to receive cochlear implants. Morgan was plastered with the battle cry “Audible Ears for Austin.” Neighbors, friends and strangers joined in the effort to raise money for the costly surgery.

Jacob Allen became one of our county’s youngest Eagle Scouts when he received the prestigious award on April 28 at the age of 13. Jacob, along with his parents, project manager Frayne Spens and about 20 other volunteers, expended 150 combined hours planning, building and installing a 38-foot long, disability-accessible wheelchair ramp for a retirement community nestled in a trailer park in Farr West. The portable ramp can be used at different trailers, as needed.

On May 14 a new Utah law takes effect that bans teen drivers from using a cell phone while driving. House Bill 103 sponsored by Rep. Lee Perry and Senate sponsor, Lyle Hillyard, is designed to protect new drivers from distraction as they develop and hone their driving skills.

Following a change recently approved by the Morgan County Council, all dogs in Morgan County should be licensed every January. Previously, dog owners licensed their animals anytime, and the license lasted a year from the original licensing date.

I had a great experience earlier this week. My son has shown some interest in family history. My wife has ancestors in England that we have been researching for some time and I was stuck on where to go next. I invited my son down to the Family History Library and we spent about two hours with a research consultant in B-2 (the British Area). One of the research consultants helped us and I learned a new technique for finding ancestors and learning more information about them. In the space of less than two hours we were able to identify more than thirty new ancestors we had not found before and gain clues about many others.
Megan Barney, of Milton, has worked as a nurse anesthetist for eight years at Davis Hospital. She works with several doctors who have organized many service trips to Guatemala through the organization Utah Medical Outreach.

Monday, April 22, the Morgan Community Choir held its 15th Annual Spring Concert. The choir took center stage in their matching blue dresses, cummerbunds and bow ties. Milan Mecham narrated the program as Lois Manning directed the choir.

Morgan County is making equipment available to the public in an effort to control noxious weeds county-wide. Backpack sprayers and sprayers that can be attached to ATVs will be available Mondays and Thursdays from the county extension office free of charge for county residents. The equipment was purchased by the Morgan County Weed Board.
Ken Hicks was honored as the Morgan County recipient of the 2013 Utah Silver Bowl Award at a ceremony held at the Marriott Hotel in Provo, Utah, on April l6. Reid Wilkinson, son of Dee and Lori Wilkinson, arrived at the Salt Lake City Airport on Thursday, April 17 in the evening. Reid just completed a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan and gets to spend two weeks with his family.
