After a brief hiatus while the city finalized the new playground equipment and prepared for the summer events, the city is back on the trail towards a splash pad. The city proposed a splash pad to residents last year after discussions with a number of residents in the county as well as visits to splash pads in other cities. Morgan City is making this a community project and planning to primarily fund the construction of the splash pad with donated funds, material, and labor from local businesses and residents. The city feels confident that they can raise the funds required.
A surprising number of Morgan School District employees are going to join the ranks of the retired this year. Ten of our stalwart members have decided it’s time to move on to future endeavors and adventures.
On May 6, the Morgan Elementary Kindergarten students took a field trip to Diamond D Ranch. Our FFA members got to help them learned about horses, cows, baby animals, crops, roping, barrel racing, Keyhole and Goat Tying.
Morgan Empowered provided a program last Thursday at the high school where they presented ideas for activities for kids this summer. The program began with a story teller who provided entertainment and education. His style was engaging and entertaining and his messages gave good food for thought.
Morgan Middle School took ten 7th graders and ten 8th graders to the state math competition last month and the results are back. All 20 students scored in the top 50% of those participating in the state competition. Special congratulations are given to Jenna Carter, Elizabeth Preslar, Shad Boswell, Elizabeth Peterson, Courtney Fairbourn, Dietrich Streuber, and Daryion Stuart for scoring in the top 25%. Our students did great considering we were competing with all schools participating this year no matter their size.
On Saturday April 30, the track teams attending the Morgan High “Pocket Change” Invitational found snow laying on the field and one inch of snow in the stands. But some blue sky and sunshine was also a welcome guest. Everyone pitched in with snow shovels and cleared the stands and the throwing areas of the snow and the thirteen teams that made the trip began the days competition.
On May 6 and 7, Trojan Track athletes loaded the bus and made the annual trip to the BYU Invitational. This was the 101 year of the meet. To get to BYU athletes have to meet certain qualifying standards set by the invitational. It is always a great place to be and this year the weather was warm and inviting. Many PR (personal records) were attained and the weather could have contributed to the good performances. This was the warmest track meet of the year and a welcome change from the 40 degree rainy, cold, meets of March and April.

Beep, Beep, Beep! Rex woke up sweating from his now normal nightmare. His parents and he has been driving down a three lane highway at 10 o’clock at night. His Dad was driving and a drunk driver in a semi swerved towards their car. Dad swerved a little to the left. Another truck driver appeared on the left and swerved into their car also. Dad swerved to the middle lane now. As his Dad slowed, so did the other trucks. At the same time both drivers swerved to the center smashing the car between the pick up and the semi. Rex remembered looking up, seeing one gigantic boulder coming down the mountain. As Rex glanced to the semi driver he thought he saw the driver turn to smoke and drift out the window. Looking at the other driver, he too turned to vapor and was gone. That was the last thing Rex saw before the boulder came crashing down, killing his parents and taking his left leg for life. The only difference between this dream and the others was this one had happened on year ago in Rex’s real life and it hadn’t stopped since.
The Latter-day Saint Cherokee Family based in Milton, Utah celebrated their 20th year of organization this last week end. They started with ninty people coming from all over the United States for the occasion by having a special “all day” experience at the Salt Lake City, Temple, with special speakers from the Temple Presidency, and doing temple work for their Cherokee ancestors. Saturday, they met at the Milton, Utah, LDS Ward Chapel for an all day celebration, with several national speakers and an elaborate Cherokee Feast. Last month FamilySearch announced that there are now more than 140 genealogical online training courses on FamilySearch.org. I have written somewhat about these, in the past, but thought given the large increase in courses that it was worth another mention.
On Tuesday former county council administrator Garth Day appeared in Federal Court and plead not guilty to six federal counts. Day made his first appearance in federal court before Judge Sam Alba.
Mayor Egbert reported to the city council on Tuesday that the city is taking action to prepare for potential flooding. The city contracted with Mecham Brothers to clean the canal near the home of Susan Ralston and also built a dike to try to keep her home from flooding. The also have placed sand bags in other locations.

Joan Durrant Ferrin was born in Morgan, Utah on May 23, 1944. She attended Morgan High School where she was drum majorette, played the flute, and served as the diary princess. It is also where she met the boy who for nearly 50 years, would affectionately call her “My Sweetheart.”

A man who can wear many hats (or in this case many uniforms), Zane Gray is finally hanging up one of them. Over the last three years Zane has served as the Regional Commissioner for Morgan County American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), but in June he will be retiring. AYSO serves approximately 550 of Morgan County’s finest youth soccer players, ranging from four to nineteen years of age. These players can be seen each weekend in the spring and fall on the fields of the Morgan North Stake Bowery and Kent Smith Park in Mountain Green. It is probably the largest athletic organization in the county, yet little has been said about the man who has lead these efforts with no remuneration for his work.
Edna Emma Broadhead Russell, 104, peacefully returned to her Father in Heaven on Mother’s Day, May 8, 2011.
She was born June 14, 1906, to Ernest Willard Broadhead and Ellen Gorena Bruun. Her earliest memories were of growing up in the beautiful Mancos Valley in Colorado. Her family moved to Salt Lake City while she was in grade school. Music played a large role in her life and she and her sisters were in high demand as a singing trio throughout the valley.
Summer months for children need to be a time for relaxation, fun, learning the attributes of work, and of course no school. It can also be a time when reading skills are lost if students do not participate to a small extent in summer reading programs.
Danielle Morgan, a 201 1 graduate of Morgan High School FFA, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Barber Brothers Ford and Ford Motor Company. Morgan’s parents are Jason Morgan and Rhonda Morgan of Morgan, Morgan plans to study at Weber State University.
Jason Clark, the son of Brent and Cindy Clark of Morgan has been selected as the Valedictorian for the College of Agriculture at Utah State University. Jason grew up in Morgan, Utah helping out on their family’s dairy farm.
Morgan played Grantsville at home on May 4 2011. The Lady Trojan’s played hard against the Cowboys. The first inning neither teams scored and in the second inning Grantsville got two runs in and three runs in the third inning.
Morgan traveled to Bear River the 27 April 2011. The Lady Trojan’s came out strong and ready to play ball and finally the weather was not a factor in the game. The Lady Trojan’s battled back and forth with the bears, with some great defensive plays from Hannah McDermott in the field and Whitney Titus pitching at the mound with Raqeal Jensen catching. Shay Hatch had some spectacular catches at shortstop and throw outs to first. Aimee Sowder, Raqeal Jensen, Shay Hatch and Talisha Bambrough had a singles and Whitney Titus had a double, but Morgan could only bring in three runs. Bear River capitalized on Morgan’s errors and won the game 13 to 3.

Ellen Mamanakis celebrated her 87th birthday on Thursday.
She was born on May 5, 1924, in Huntington, Utah. Ellen is the first of six children of Elbert and Velma Nelson. She was raised in Ferron, Utah and was in the first graduating class of Emery High.
Laurel Dean Rock, of Morgan, will be celebrating his 90th Birthday this year. He was born in Morgan, on May 6, 1921, to Laurel and Leatha Phillips Rock.
