“The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle…If there is no struggle, there is no progress.  Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.”

Morgan Middle School took ten 7th graders and eleven 8th graders to the state math competition last month and the results are back.  All 21 students scored in the top 50%.  Special congratulations are given to Sadie Carter, Logan Jones, Logan Cameron, Savana Carter, Jaiden Farr, and Tyler Payne for scoring in the top 25%, and to Carter Bailey, Ryan Milburn, Konnor Andrews, Weston Blocker, and Colin Smith for scoring in the top 10%.  Our students did an outstanding job, considering we were competing against all schools this year, no matter their size.  This would not be unlike all schools, from 1A through 5A, playing for the state championship in a given sport.

I remember doing an article earlier this year about bullying but I think that this week, I need to go deeper into it. We all know that bullying is wrong but why does it still occur? Maybe those who bully can’t forgive others for their mistakes. Maybe those who bully have problems of their own and they don’t know who to take their problems out on. None the less, BULLYING IS WRONG!

The students from Mountain Green Elementary School were pleased to have Rick Tolman, author of the book I Saw A Purple Bubble, visit their school.   Mr. Tolman spent a full day at the school reading to individual classes and talking to the students about the importance of using their imagination.  The students were absolutely delighted with the book and thoroughly enjoyed the time that Mr. Tolman spent talking to them about why and how he wrote the book, the beautiful illustrations that are in the book, and the process that he went through to get the book published.  Author visits are always fun learning events for the students and we appreciate the time that Mr. Tolman spent to help cultivate the students’ love of books.

The dedication of a bus garage is not normally an occasion where there is great emotion expressed, but the dedication of the Morgan School District’s new transportation facility was certainly an exception.  School Board member Neil Carrigan spoke of his experiences as a young man working with his father on the district’s busses. His eyes misted a few times as he reminisced about time spent with his father in the old transportation facility. “It was a wooden building ... in that building there was a rest room.  It was a small rest room.  It was so small it could only hold one roll of toilet paper, if you had two you were crowded.”  He related the early work by his father to acquire the tools necessary to maintain the busses.  He continued, “You could put three busses in the garage if you did it right.  You could put one on the left hand side as far as you could get and then you took the other one and drove it up about three quarters of the way and then you could drive the third bus up behind the bus on the left... you had to do it just right or your couldn’t get them in. “  He spoke of his experience of measuring the gas remaining in the tank on the site.  “When I was a kid that was the funnest job I had.  I used to go out and measure how much gas was in there.  You drop a big thing down there and go tell dad that you had 500 or 100 gallons in there.”

Ever wanted to do or say something that was absolutely crazy? I am pretty sure we all have. Whether it be standing up for what we know to be right or to admit to our crush that we like them. It’s scary and it can decide your future or it can change how you live your life. However courage can be deflected by the fear of failure or of rejection.

Some of the professional literature on adolescent reading motivation suggests that teenagers are disinterested or non-motivated readers and as they move through the adolescent years their motivation to read diminishes.  On the other hand, some teens are willing to read but get discouraged from reading for various reasons.  With this being said, it is obvious that the middle school years are a critical juncture in adolescents’ lives where their reading actions or inactions can have long-lasting benefits or consequences.  Literacy plays a vital role in a person’s success throughout life, and motivation plays an integral role in the acquisition of literacy skills.  Therefore, motivational factors cannot be overlooked in learning situations, particularly during these critical learning years.

As parents we attend Parent/Teacher Conferences because we are concerned about our children. We want to know how they are doing in school socially, academically, and gain some insight into our children’s lives when they are away from home. Teachers dutifully tell us our child’s academic strengths, weaknesses, and provide some knowledge regarding social growth. At some point during the conference DIBELS scores are mentioned. The purpose of this article is to provide basic information regarding DIBELS so you, as parents/guardians, will have a better understanding of what DIBELS scores mean for your child. It is important to understand how DIBELS works so you will be better equipped to be your child’s advocate. So, what are DIBELS?
