Potholes, patchwork and standing water, oh my!!
The Morgan County Council unanimously approved up to $400,000 in road repairs Tuesday, getting a solid start on a much-needed road repair and maintenance program in the county.
As many as 11 projects totaling 4.1 miles of county roads are on the list, ranked in order by the county facilities director and contracted engineer.
“The council had no input on the areas that are being worked on.  It is not a political thing,” said Morgan County Councilman Robert Kilmer.  “It is strictly based on a professional analysis of what needs to be fixed first.”

After the brief opening, Turner and Olsen joined over 20 other special needs cowboys and cowgirls in the arena to experience the thrill of a rodeo.  They came with all different abilities but with the same chance to participate.

As families with small children arrived at the Morgan County Fair to participate in the children’s games, local businesses, families and individuals gathered Saturday in the Ray W. Little Education Pavilion to purchase sheep, hogs and steers in support of area youth.
Each youth can show as many animals as they would like, but you can only sell one animal in the junior livestock event.  This year 150 animals were sold, which means that 150 youth raised livestock for this occasional.  That is a lot of responsibility for kids this age and gives them a great chance to learn about and respect where their food comes from.
For almost a year, junior livestock participants must learn to properly feed, care for and exercise their animals.  This is no small task.  Especially for those raising steers that weigh ten times what the children raising them weigh.

Community rallies to thank firefighters

As of Monday, July 28, the Morgan County fire dubbed the Tunnel Hollow fire was completely contained.  The fire was ignited by lightening on Sunday, July 20, and grew as windy conditions blew the flames up the mountainside.
Thankfully, the breeze also blew in a rain storm that provided much needed precipitation to help contain the last four percent of the blaze.
Eight smokejumper teams, a HotShot team and seven hand crew teams were brought in to fight the fire that eventually ate up 1,600 acres of land in Morgan County.

Morgan County’s 11-year run with the Widowmaker Hillclimb has come to an end.
“It was a family decision we are no longer going to do the Widowmaker because of liability and insurance,” said Logan Wilde, who helps run the family ranch.
For years, the Wilde family was able to buy insurance through various programs for $5,000 a year for the event.  When previous programs stopped offering insurance, new insurance quotes were just too much for the family to swallow.

Everyday Morgan resident Shantel Watkins, 21, sees the new white chaps hanging on her closet door reminding her of her reign as Oakley Independence Day Rodeo queen.  Sometimes, she peeks inside the padded box at her crown worth several hundreds of dollars.
But then she’s off to fulfill her duties as the reigning queen of a PRCA rodeo.  Next on the list is Coalville’s PRCA rodeo Aug. 8 and 9, where she will ride in the grand entry at the beginning of the rodeo, sign autographs, mingle with the crowd, and maybe even push cows for the roping event.

Brave firefighters commended for their efforts

On Sunday, July 20 the late afternoon sky was lit with an incredible lightning storm.  As the storm raged and passed, it left quite a shock as three fires were started at nearly the same time across the valley.
One fire started near the Croydon cemetery and burned approximately 120 acres before being put out.  This fire was primarily handled by the Summit County Fire Department, but crews from Morgan were requested.
Another fire burned in the Norwoods area along Highway 66.  Morgan Fire Chief Dave Rich received a call from a resident who had been sitting on their front porch and watched as lightening started this blaze.  He called the fire in on his way to the fire station.
As most of the fire crews headed to this fire that eventually burned six acres, the last call came in for the Tunnel Hollow area, the canyon heading towards Taggarts.  Crews were diverted from the Norwood fire, and as the crews reached Round Valley, it became apparent they would not be able to reach this fire.
