First of all, congratulations to all of you who have signed up for either the 5k, half-marathon or full marathon that will take place in our beautiful Morgan Valley this summer! For those of you who haven’t, it will be an exciting experience, a first for Morgan Valley and I definitely encourage you to participate. I’ve hoped one day there would be a marathon in this amazing place to run and it’s about to happen for the first time in less than five months!

The school board reported that the drawings on the new PE facility (above) are approximately fifty percent complete. The structure will be 150 feet by 293 feet. The current name for the facility is the Trojan Century Center since this year marks the one hundred year anniversary of the first high school class in Morgan.
The school board received a request to start a debate club, but approved a debate team on Tuesday. The high school saw this as a first step to determine if there was sufficient interest to form a team.
In the school district meeting on Tuesday the school board adopted a new maturation curriculum. A group consisting of school representatives and parents has been studying maturation programs across the state in an effort to build the best program for Morgan. The results of their study and work were presented in the school board meeting and approved to be implemented.
The school district took final action on the question of the land sale to the county on Tuesday. In a unanimous vote the school board decided to retain the land and to fence the entire parcel. This move will remove from the table any option for the county to use the land for the fair grounds. The board acted after the county failed to come to a decision on how to proceed on the land after three separate responses from the school board.
Registration for the 2011-2012 school year is about to begin! Students will receive information soon and we would like to encourage parents to be involved with their student’s class selection.
In the next few months teachers throughout the Morgan School District will be participating in statewide academy classes learning about the implementation of the new Utah State Common Core Educational Standards.
In a move to protect citizens from fraudulent solicitations, Morgan City adopted an update to the code governing solicitors. “We have had a lot of complaints about solicitors,” said councilmember Shelly Betz.
It has been more than three years ago that access to Ancestry.com was removed from family history centers. Removed might nit be the correct wording since some of the resources of the site continued to be available, but it felt as though it was being removed. Many of the collections on Ancestry were no long available, including most of the United States census and the British census. Shortly thereafter FamilySearch worked to replace at least some of the resources by indexing the 1910 census and purchasing subscriptions to HeritageQuest online and FindMyPast, but the loss of Ancestry continued to leave a hole. That hole has now been filled as nearly all of the Ancestry.com records can now be accessed for free from the Morgan family history center.
Wednesday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m. in the Morgan Senior Center we will start a free six-week workshop for people with ongoing health concerns. The classes will be taught by Jesse Garcia from Weber Human Services and will be highly interactive with breaks and snacks as well.

Kent and Ellen Poll are thrilled to announce the marriage of their daughter, Kami, to Douglas William Houck, son of William and Pamela Houck, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon.
In a controversial move, Governor Herbert signed into law House Bill HB477 and in one stroke of the pen significantly reduced the openness of Utah government. He took this action after repeatedly supporting a policy of transparency.
It was an alumni reunion in the stands last Saturday night. Many Trojan fans made the trip to Salt Lake City to watch our Morgan boys basketball team play for the state 3A title. Everyone expected a close game but I don’t think anyone expected a 44 to 33 final score.
In the council meeting on Tuesday the council remained deadlocked on the issue of the land purchase from the school district, effectively killing the land purchase. Members Ned Mecham, Don Mathews, and Howard Hansen were in favor of the purchase, Members Ronda Kippen, Lyle Nelson and Chairman Tina Kelly were opposed. Member Kilmer chose to abstain. The issue needs four votes to proceed.
In 2010 Morgan High School’s Advanced Theatre group, “The Player’s of Plays” received superior ratings at Region Drama Festival where they won the region drama trophy. They continued on to State Drama Festival Where the Group also received superior ratings along with many showcased performances and medals won by Morgan High School drama students. “The Players of Plays” are a 30 member auditioned group under the direction of acclaimed actor and instructor Mr. Adam Slee. The group includes actors, actresses, technicians, make-up artists, dancers, and singers. This advanced group has received recognition from numerous adjudicators and has been selected out of 25 schools in Utah to have their upcoming musical Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” be reviewed and Judged for a chance to perform at the Jimmy Awards!

Gene and Lillian Carter of Morgan will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and Gene’s 80th birthday on Saturday, March 12 at an open house held at the Morgan LDS Rock Church.
The couple was married March 10, 1950 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were later sealed in the St. George LDS Temple on October 16, 1954. Over the years they have both served in many capacities in their church.
Our kind and loving mother, Jane Dawson Merz, 85, of Morgan, passed from this earthly plain on Sunday February 27, 2011 to be reunited with her eternal love, Martin. Cancer took her physical body but her spirit lives on.

When Kayli Heywood headed to Utah State University in the fall of 2009, she knew that she wanted music to be a part of her experience there. She joined Logan’s Institute Choir, Latter Day Voices, and made many new friends. One of those friendships slowly developed into romance and now will become a lifetime of music together for Kayli and Stephen R. Nielsen.
Currently students live as well as learn in a world that has been profoundly transformed by the immediate availability of immense stores of information in an array of formats. One form of literacy that is important to the success of Morgan County School District students is Information Literacy.
WASHINGTON, DC Ruston Roberts of Morgan Elementary School has received a $2,000 Learning & Leadership Grant from the NEA Foundation to lead the Morgan Elementary School faculty in a study of How to Give Effective Feedback to Your Students by Susan Brookhart.
Collaborative teams will review the text, the research, and student and classroom data over the course of the year to support implementation of the principles of effective feedback. The study and implementation will be supported by text, DVD training, and coaching.
The students of Mountain Green Elementary School were excited to be able to share some doughnuts with their dad’s last week. As a wrap up to the month long Dr. Seuss celebration, students invited their dad’s, grandpa’s, or mom’s to the school for a doughnut, milk, conversation, and reading.

Wow, what a game! Morgan fans got their moneys worth last Friday night as the Trojans took on the Desert Hills Thunder in the state 3A semifinals. There was never a dull moment from tip off to final buzzer.
Round two, Morgan Trojans vs. Richfield Wildcats. Bright and early Thursday morning, February 24, 2011, and the Trojan Boys find themselves playing a big game in a big stadium.
A strong turn out of Morgan fans sat ready as the jump ball was tossed. Tip goes to the wildcats. A quick pass underneath to Richfield’s big man and the Wildcats are on the board. Morgan works for an open shot against a feisty defense.
The Morgan Lady Trojans entered the State playoffs last week riding a 13 game winning streak after winning their initial first round game vs. North Sanpete by a whopping 51 points. All signs pointed to a strong run to the 3A championship, or at least getting to the championship game and letting the chips fall where they may.

Local mom and fitness enthusiast, Karen Nelson will be starting a running club for kids of all ages. While helping with the initial planning of Morgan’s first Annual Marathon, Karen was inspired to fulfill her dream of working with kids in the fitness arena. She has always wanted to do some kind of running type activity that involved children and a running club seems to be the perfect fit.
In a five to two decision on Tuesday night the council voted to eliminate the current volunteer board of appeals in favor of a one person professional paid position to hear and decide appeals cases. The county will contract with one or more individuals, likely from outside the county, to hear the cases.
A lively debate ensued in the county council when an item about the upcoming plans for parks was raised on Tuesday. Member Ronda Kippen who has the portfolio assignment on the council for parks brought forward items to inform the council of plans for a bowry at the park in the Cottonwoods and also identified manpower gaps for the care of the parks. The county has recently had turnover in the jobs that have traditionally maintained the parks and now is faced with the dilemma of how to address the needs as spring approaches.

The horse 4-H program here in Morgan County is gearing up to begin an exciting new season. The goal of the 4-H program is to reach and encourage all children throughout our county to participate: building self-esteem and long-term skills to help them now, and throughout their lives. Any youth ranging in age from 9-18 years who are interested in furthering their horsemanship knowledge and skills are invited to register for the coming sea-son through the Morgan County Extension Office.
