One week ago, August 5 and 6, was the Morgan County Fair annual rodeo.  Scheduled were the traditional competitions such as barrel racing, calf roping, and bronco busting.  
The crowds were there to support and cheer them on as well.

Is the hot weather getting you down?  Are you looking for a way to cool off?  The Morgan City Council is working on a project to come to your rescue.  
The city has been exploring an upgrade and renovation to Riverside Park.  The city would like to replace the playground equipment, add sidewalks, and renovate the bathrooms.  The city is also exploring adding a splash pad.

    Fire Chief Dave Rich presented at the County Council meeting on Tuesday night at the request of Council Chairman Creager.  Rich reported to the council that the fire department had responded to a fire near the county’s television antennae.  As they were travelling to the site, one of the county’s brush trucks repeatedly slipped out of gear causing delays and a safety hazard.

    At the council meeting on Tuesday night, the Clark family presented to the council about a proposal brought to them from UDOT (the Utah Department of Transportation).  UDOT has been working with the Clarks and Morgan City to arrange to trade land in the city’s industrial park to build a new facility to house the State’s road maintenance vehicles and supplies.

    Chairman Creager took about an hour to review the state of the county’s finances in the council meeting on Tuesday night.  The information he shared was intended to prepare the council for the presentation by the independent auditor scheduled for the next council meeting.  It also provided background for the mid year review of the budget where the Council makes adjustments to account for unexpected expenditures and to take into account grants awarded to the county.

Mrs. James Taggart of Lewiston, Utah and Mrs. Henry Taggart of Salt Lake City visited here a short time Sunday at the homes of their cousins Mr. Bert Dickson and Mrs. Geo Hansen. They were at Como Saturday for the Taggart reunion.

    Brenda Nelson is the current County Recorder for Morgan County.  Nelson is facing off against Kimlyn Porter for the recorder job in the Fall election.
    Nelson is a 21 year resident of Morgan County.  She grew up in Sunset and lived in Clearfield, but moved to find a great place for raise a family.  She found what she was looking for in Morgan County.

    Garth Day, County Council Administrator tendered his resignation today.  He is required under his employment contract to give ninety days notice.  Day indicated that his last day will be November 1, 2010.  He expressed that he is resigning to “pursue other interests.”  He is giving more notice than required to help the county have time to find a replacement and have a smooth transition.

     The Morgan County Fair Royalty contest was held Monday morning August 2nd 2010. Young ladies from around the county competed for the chance to win one of the royalty positions. The girls are divided into groups according to age/grade in school. They began with personal interviews with the judges, then on to present a short speech, modeling, and answering impromptu questions. The contest then moved to the Morgan County Fairgrounds where they competed in the horsemanship portion. The winners were announced at the Junior Rodeo that night.

Blaine Breshears is a long time Morgan resident.  His family moved from West Valley to Morgan in 1979.  Breshears attended school in Morgan and graduated from Morgan High in 1987.

There are several things that I remember about visiting my Grandma Frances when I was young; Grandma was petite, standing only about 4’6” short and living alone in her spacious farmhouse.  She was small but very active and just a bit feisty if one chose to disagree with her or tease her about something.

Glenn Wright is the Democratic candidate for Utah House District 53.  Wright says that he is “not a typical Utah politician.”  Wright was born in New Jersey, and he grew up in the Northeast where his father worked in textiles.

Mel Brown has a family tradition of political service.  His father ran for the state legislature when Brown was young, and he and his brother have both served as Utah’s speaker of the house.  Brown is a man who has years of experience in the legislative process, and strong connections to the area he serves.

When one gets involved in politics in Morgan County it is only a matter of minutes before encountering Larry Hatch.  Hatch is easily the most active person in the County in politics.  He serves as the Chairman for the Republican Party.  Although Hatch clearly communicates conservative values, he has been diligent in ensuring that all voices and all viewpoints be heard, whenever possible.

Residents throughout the county gathered at Kent Smith Park in Mountain Green to join in the festivities celebrating the arrival of pioneers to Utah. The celebration has become an annual tradition and includes activities for the whole family.
Kenneth Thomas Adams, 90 of Porterville, passed away on July 27, 2005.

Lisa Kennison Wood, 43, North Salt Lake, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2010 after suffering cardiac arrest while jogging. She was born in Glendale, Arizona and grew up in northern Utah.

 The Morgan High Class of 1943 met on Friday, July 15, 2005 at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneer building. They had a dinner, and talked of old times. Of the Class of 1943, there were 13 members of the class at the reunion.

Some of you know that this is almost the anniversary of my mom’s death two years ago  and those that do probably know that I am a complete and total Momma’s Boy! What can I say, she loved me! She took good care of me and I hope that I took good care of her when she needed me.

Morgan- Gale Floyd Allen, 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, July 8, 2010. He was born March 12, 1920 in Morgan, Utah, to Herbert and Noreen Olsen Allen. He was the youngest of six children.

Al Lundgren is a candidate for county attorney running against the incumbent Jann Farris.  Lundgren currently serves on the County Council.  Lundgren grew up in Colorado and attended his first year of college at Colorado State.  After the first year he moved to Utah to attend BYU.

If the community of Mountain Green had a theme song, it would probably be the one where in the cartoon, “Madagascar”, when the lemur sings “I like to move it, move it… physically fit, physically fit, physically, physically, physically fit.” Upon hearing the catchy tune, and seeing the sweet moves, one can’t help but to move it too. And that is just what the organizers of Saturday’s Tour de Mtn. Green were hoping to accomplish by strutting their own stuff; getting others to get up and move it too.

The Morgan County Fair is a 99 year old tradition of the community, and the nearly century old tradition grows and improves with each annual event.  
However, before Morgan had its own fair, the residents of the county joined with the residents of Davis, Weber and Box Elder Counties.  These counties, of the Intermountain Fair Association, met and displayed their exhibits in Ogden City.

In nine years of being a publisher of weekly newspapers, I only went on one vacation. On that week, I went to great lengths to make sure that a friend, a very reliable friend, would make sure the paper was completed and sent to the printer by the deadline.  I went over with him each step in the process over and over until I felt satisfied he understood everything.  He, however, was ready to forsake any and all forms of the written or published word whatsoever.

During the last few years school districts have been forced to rely more and more on local property taxes to supplement the money appropriated by the legislature to pay our teachers, maintain our facilities and pay for programs that enhance our students’ education.  This year, in a down economy, not only are the funds from the state budget impacted, but the local funding from property taxes will be affected as well.

Since my husband, Don, and I purchased The Morgan County News, we have published 32 newspapers, and it’s definitely been a lot of work. When that deadline is coming for the newspaper to go to the printer, it feels like… Do you ever have that dream where you’re running as hard as you can from something and you just can’t get away?

Jann Farris is the County Attorney for Morgan County.  His current term ends this year, and he is running for his second term as Morgan County Attorney.  Attorney Al Lundgren, who is currently serving on the Morgan County Council, is running against him.

Saturday morning welcomed runners with blue skies and beautiful weather. The event ran from Riverside Park on a scenic course, taking in views of the Morgan Valley, to running along the river trail. This year's event was again a successful fundraiser for the Morgan High School Cross Country Team with nearly 160 athletes competing.

It was a large crowd that gathered to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, July 3. Everything planned came together perfectly, along with the cooler summer weather, to make for a great day of celebration.

It’s been three decades since my teenage years and I still have very vivid memories of my life growing up in the early 80s.  Of course, it was memorable when I got my driver’s license at 16.  It felt like a small step into the world of being an adult.  I was excited and “ready to roll,”  but it is difficult to “roll” when you don’t even have wheels, let alone the car and engine to go with them.

    The 2nd Annual Miss Morgan Queen Contest was held Thursday, June 10 at Graceland Equestrian Center in Morgan.     
    There were five excellent candidates competing for the title and many spectators showing support.  In the end the following were crowned: Queen – Kami Call, 1st Attendant – Danielle Robison, 2nd Attendant – Sam Peterson, Miss Congeniality – Kacie Chappell, and Horsemanship went to Dani Hammer!
