On Saturday, May 17, which is also Armed Forces Day, the Morgan County Pilot’s Association and the Morgan County Airport Advisory Board will be sponsoring the Fourth annual Veteran’s Recognition Day beginning at 10 a.m. at the Morgan County Airport (located at 5000 Cottonwood Canyon  Rd., Mountain Green) to recognize and honor all veterans from all branches of service.

Saturday, March 29, 2014 has been declared as Welcome Home Vietnam Era Veterans Day.  The local Posts of the VFW and American Legion would like to invite all vets and partners who served during this era to an open house from 5-6 p.m. at the Veterans Room in the Morgan County Court House.  Come and join us for refreshments and remembrance of your service.  This activity is for all who served during this “Era,” one did not have to serve in Vietnam, all who served during that time are veterans no matter whether you served at home or abroad.  Contact Milan Mecham at 801-829-3565 or Dick Slate at 801-829-6224.

American Legion Post 67 and VFW Post 6154 held their annual Christmas party in the Morgan County Auditorium on Wednesday evening, Dec. 4. All veterans throughout the county were invited to attend this annual get-together for pie and ice cream and be entertained by the Nelson Brother’s Band. This was a great opportunity for members of both posts and other invited veterans to come together and get to know one another during this special time of the year.

News reporter and author Elmer Davis once said, “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.” On Monday, Nov. 11, Morgan Middle school students celebrated Veteran’s Day by honoring the many brave Morgan residents who have fought valiantly for our rights and freedoms.

Local residents gathered to honor those who served to protect our freedoms at the annual veteran’s recognition day celebration.  The day started out with a flag ceremony carried out by Morgan County’s American Legion Post 67 and VFW Post 6154 which included Jim Nickerson, Karl Abbott, Jay Garfield, Gordon Smith, Vern Kilbourn, Royal Lamb, Tom Despain, Cliff Jenkins and Tim Carter.  Following the ceremony, one veteran was allowed to participate in a fly-by in a Stearman Bi-Plane with pilot Doug Compton.

Madison Sunday, daughter of Steve and Karen Sunday, was chosen as this year’s Social Science Sterling Scholar! Madison founded the Morgan Youth Service Interact Club, which works closely with the national Rotary Club, her junior year and attended Girls’ State, run by the American Legion Auxiliary, at Southern Utah University last summer.

“Veterans, we are free because you made a sacrifice, thanks!” was on the marquee,  to reminds us why we honor them. Morgan Middle School presented their annual Veterans Day Assembly, a tradition of honoring veterans that has continued over the past ten years.

Donald J. Anderton was born July 20th, 1923 in Henefer, Summit County, Utah to John Fredrick and Cheltina Elizabeth Jones Anderton. He died on October 4, 2011 at his home in Morgan, Utah surrounded by his family.

All county Veterans are invited to attend the combined meeting of American Legion Post #67 and VFW Post #6154 for an opportunity provided by these veterans groups to hear from the Executive Director of the Utah Department of  Veterans  Affairs, Terry Schow.

July 4th was a huge success as the Riverside Park filled with people from all across the valley as well as from out of town. The day started at 7:00 A.M. with the Morgan High School Volleyball team volunteers cooking up a scrumptious breakfast for all the holiday goers to enjoy. They served well over 650 breakfasts; the line seemed to be continuous until about 9:00 A.M.

It was a beautiful, sunny day at the airport as the day began with a pancake breakfast.  The theme was World War II.  There were vehicles and displays of aircraft on hand with many interesting items for both children and adults.  There was also anticipation in the air for the guests who would soon arrive.  Once breakfast was complete there was a flag ceremony conducted by the American Legion.

Veterans were honored at a ceremony hosted by the American Legion Post 67 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6154.  There were services held at each of the cemeteries in Morgan with a final ceremony at the courthouse.

Thursday, November 11, 2010 was a very memorable day for our Morgan Middle School students and the 250 guests who joined us for our annual Veterans Day Assembly.  It was an honor to recognize those who have served and are presently serving our great country during a time of war.  Since our nation’s founding, brave men and women have taken up arms to defend the truths set forth in the Declaration of Independence: “That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

     The traditional honor of leading Morgan County’s 4th of July parade as Grand Marshals, has been given to Larry and Sherolyn Jenkins. The couple will lead the parade tomorrow to kick off Morgan County’s annual 4th of July celebration.
