Our wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, educator, coach, and friend Gloria Schwab Richardson, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sept. 21, 2012 after a valiant battle with breast cancer. Gloria was born Feb. 9, 1962 in Provo, Utah, to Marvin and Jeanne Schwab of Afton, Wyoming. 

Under the direction of their coach, Dennis Peterson, the Morgan High golf team started their Region 11 season Aug. 9, at the Oquirrh Hills golf course in Tooele. The eight varsity players that qualified for Morgan were: Seniors - McKay Kearsley, Aaron Babbitt, Jake Miles,  Juniors - Rhett Ballantyne, Garren Miles, Sophmores -Jason Bledsoe, Freshmen - Russell North, Braxton Ovard.

Don and Joan Winn will celebrate 50 years of marriage on May 25, 2012.  They met while they were students at Brigham Young University and were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1962.  Don was born in Pocatello and raised in Rexburg, and Joan was born in Salt Lake and raised in East Millcreek.

Kristen Korth received the Coach Administrator of the Year award from AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) at the Section Meeting in Las Vegas February 12.

On January 17, 2012 the Morgan High Cheer leaders traveled to Timpview High school to participate in the Utah Cheer Coaches Association State Championship. The cheerleaders work hard all year and look forward to the competition. Morgan also won the state title in 2008 and 2011. This year Morgan beat out a tough team from Desert Hills for the title. The girls were thrilled and surprised because their coach Tammy Bullock had just talked to them about being good sports if they did not win. 

Days later and coach Liz Wiscombe still cannot believe the outcome of the 3A State Volleyball match, “We were expecting to win but not that easily”, said Wiscombe about the sweep against Snow Canyon.  Snow Canyons team had taken state for the last five years in the 4A class division and expected to do the same in 3A.

On Thursday, September 15, the Lady Trojan’s volleyball team battled Bear River on the court.  Ashlee Gallen led the team to a 3-0 win with 19 points (3 aces) and 13 digs while teammate Casidee Lish contributed 12 kills and 7 digs.  The Trojan”s found themselves down 4-7 in the first game when Gallen served seven straight, the team held the lead for the remainder of the game.  Serving 10 straight in the second game Gallen gave the ladies a comfortable lead at 17-5 setting them up for a 25-17 win.  The team played hard throughout the match and the scores showed it, the final scores were 25-18, 25-17, and 25-16.

Nationally, high school sports are still increasing in the number of participants that plays yearly.  It has increased every year for the past 16 years with 2010-11 being the most ever.  That trend is also prevalent at Morgan high School.  If sports are so important, one has to ask the question why?   Is it because people value the sports or is it what the sports program can teach our youth?  It seems to be the social, emotional and intellectual satisfaction that is gained by the participants.  The true purpose of high school sports is to serve the complete educational needs of all students.  The preeminent purpose is to harness discipline – desire – and commitment of all individuals involved.  Another lesson that cannot be over looked is that responsibility comes with the privilege of playing.  Morgan High School now offers 20 sports and activities sponsored by Utah High School Activities Association.  As administrators we know there are other benefits that come to students who participate that include having higher GPAs, better attendance, lower dropout rate, and fewer discipline issues.   At Morgan High School our goal is to employ people that are double goal coaches, which not only coach the sport but teach life lessons as well.  In the world of high school sports emotions can and often run high.  Our coaches are encouraged to teach, practice, and model good sportsmanship.

Last weekend the Morgan High wrestling team travelled to Delta to compete in an important two-day multi-school tournament.  Unfortunately a couple of our Morgan wrestlers ended up in the hospital due to some fairly serious injuries.  I was at work when I received a call from Coach Allen that our son, Christian, had dislocated his elbow during a match and was on his way to the local hospital.  My wife jumped in the car to make the three hour drive to Delta.

It’s that time of year for high school hoops players, win or report to your spring sports coach. Last Friday our Trojan Boys showed they would like to keep it indoors for a few more games!
I had a chance to catch up with coach Jim Wiscombe on Thursday before the game. We discussed briefly the Region 11 champs season and how the team is feeling as they move into the state playoffs.

The Troyettes of Morgan High participated in their first competition this past weekend.  The girls had a very successful first competition.  They came away with 1st place in every category (military, dance, and kick), won the Sweepstakes trophy that was 4 ft. tall, and also had two girls in the top three for drill down, Nikki Green, 1st place, and Karlie Rupe, 2nd place.

I’ve had the opportunity to interview Morgan High School Volleyball Coach, Liz Wiscombe many times before, so as I sat down on Wednesday to interview her about the volleyball team’s recent win of the 3A state championship, it seemed like old times.

Jann Farris is the County Attorney for Morgan County.  His current term ends this year, and he is running for his second term as Morgan County Attorney.  Attorney Al Lundgren, who is currently serving on the Morgan County Council, is running against him.

I love baseball! Like many boys, I was signed up for my little league team when I was seven. Ever since then, I have played either baseball or softball. Yes, when I became an old geezer, I had to change to softball.
