Friday night the Morgan High School Trojan football team took on the Emery Spartans and conquered this year’s homecoming game. Unlike the historic story of the Trojans and Spartans, the Morgan Trojans had no problem taking apart the Spartan offense, winning the game 35-0.
In the first down, Morgan quickly lit up the board with 14 points. It was apparent the Spartans were going to have a tough time getting anything past this strong defense.
Very little of the game was actually played on the visitor side of the 50 yard line, as the clock ticked on.
At half-time, the score was 21-0 and it was time for the cheerleaders and the drill team to work their magic on the field for the packed stadium. Both gave performances worthy of the crowd’s applause.
As the 2014 Homecoming royalty approached the field, the stands roared with cheers for the adorable Maddie Francis and Josh Woitaszewski, this year’s queen and king.  Francis was thrilled to be there, waving both hands at the crowd with Woitaszewski leading the way with a giant smile. Woitaszewski is the son of Mark and Melissa Powers and Francis is the daughter of Richard and Triscia Francis.

MARRIAGE RECORDS BY COUNTRY

MARRIAGE RECORDS BY COUNTRY

April 13, 2014

You’ve heard the story before. Girl meets boy. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl proposes. And soon the couple finds themselves standing in a county clerk’s office asking about marriage licenses. Marriage records are an incredibly valuable resource for genealogists. Marriage records can give information about family members, dates, places, and more. FamilySearch.org has a large collection of records relating to marriage records. In this class, we will discuss the history of marriage records, learn about marriage records from different localities, and then talk about the resources of FamilySearch.org relating to marriage.

Many people who become involved in family history research look at what other people have already completed on their common lines and then begin research where the first blank appears. There is a reason that Grandma or Aunt Clara stopped where they did. It was hard research!

When working on your genealogy, remember to follow up on any mention of a funeral home. Their records provide researchers with information about the individual’s death and more. They may show just a few details or the minutia involved in planning a funeral down to what flowers were sent and any clothes or beautician services purchased by the deceased’s loved ones. Details like who paid for the funeral might help identify family members and their addresses. Ministers who are listed as performing the funeral service provide clues as to additional church records that you will want to locate and research.

Morgan County offices were closed Friday when a federal judge ruled the state’s ban on same-sex marriage had been overturned. But Morgan County Attorney Jann Farris was watching the news with the rest of the state.

Morgan County offices were closed Friday when U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that the 2004 Utah State Constitutional amendment defining marriage as only a legal union between a man and a woman was unconstitutional. He ruled that the amendment violates due process and equal protection under the fourteenth amendment. Salt Lake County immediately began issuing licenses.

Local artist Kim Corpany is known all over the world for her bronze sculptures set at prominent points.  She discovered her talent for and love of art early on.  In kindergarten, she determined a picture she was assigned to color wasn’t quite right.  She drew in a different black line and then colored it in.  Her teacher scolded her for not coloring in the lines even after attempts to explain the imperfections.  Disheartened, she took the picture home.  Upon review, her mother explained Kim should keep coloring the way she thought best.

Chances are, most people in the community have benefited from the service, works, and influence of the Morgan Lions Club.  Through their many acts of service, sweet smiles and genuine joy have been reflected on the faces of Morgan children for many generations.  George Francis jokes that the Morgan Lions Club has been around “since the time Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” While the exact date is not known with certainty, the Morgan Lions Club has been around for a very long time, well over 80 years.  Throughout these years it has touched young and old alike. True to their motto “We serve”, the Morgan Lions Club has sponsored many of the celebrations Morgan residents have grown up with and continue to cherish with their own children and grandchildren. Lions clubs can be found serving throughout the world. In fact, they are the world’s largest service club organization. Although the parent organization is an international club, the Morgan Lions Club has been especially focused on the needs of our own community. They have structured the service they provide and activities they sponsor in a way to connect very personally with the people of Morgan.

This season has been the best I have seen these boys play with their hearts.  As this season comes to an end, we see the tears of dedication and of sacrifice come to a halt.  The last region game against the Spanish Fork Don’s was a hard loss at 20 to 35. However it was fought well and the Morgan Varsity football made some very strategic plays and grew together in trusting each other, trusting the coaches, and showing unity as a team. Spanish Fork commented that this game and playing against the Morgan Trojans, was the toughest game they have played against all year.

Vital records refer to the records of birth, marriage, and death.  They represent the key genealogical phases in an individual’s life, and are the most universally kept records.  The history of vital records in the United States has been, and continues to be, one filled with inconsistencies.  This has made US research more challenging.

The heart of genealogy is the evidence that forms our conclusions.  We search for clues of our ancestors among the records of the past.  All of genealogical research focuses on a name, a place, and a time.  Finding that elusive record that contains our ancestor is the key to success.

“To make the best better”, is the 4-H motto. It’s also the feeling conveyed when talking with Jessie Franich about her 4-H Horse riding Club. Jessie has been a 4-H leader with the riding club “The Wet Blankets” since 1980. How the name came to be, she remembers, “When the kids were working on a name for the club, they thought when a horse works hard the blanket gets wet. Wet blankets make good horses.”
