As many high school seniors are looking forward to their graduation this May, some previous graduates are looking back, way back. The Morgan School District will again be honoring past educators and employees of the district and their families at MHS commencement exercises and are looking for nominations.  Since 2008, 12 outstanding individuals have been honored for their service to the community in years past. Their names have been added to the stunning Trojan monument located just outside the MHS office. Their contributions and legacy should not be forgotten or go unappreciated. We are excited to recognize excellence from the past in the Morgan School District and look forward to the names of this year’s recipients to be included on the beautiful Trojan monument.

As I contemplate my six children and 12 grandchildren, I wonder at times what would happen if my wife and I were thrust into the role of raising one or more of our grandchildren. In a perfect world, parents raise their children in their own homes and grandparents have the privilege and joy of spoiling their grandchildren—and then sending them back home to their parents.  Well, it’s not a perfect world that we live in, and more and more grandparents find themselves in the position of part-time, temporary, full-time, or permanent primary caregivers and/or guardians for their grandchildren.

**Hailey Kilburn Jones (cousin):
Marnie meant so much to me.  So many wonderful memories: her beautiful smile; her heart-felt giggles, giggles that came from her toes up; her one-of-a kind hugs, I always knew how much she loved me when she gave me one.  She wasn't just my cousin I was very close with, but my friend also.  All the fun Christmas Eves together as a family are great memories.  She was my protector growing up.  She was ALWAYS there when I needed her most; it's like she could sense that.  When my husband lost his job, she was the first one to my house to see how she could help.  She was so caring, loving, and giving.  I look back on her life and realize all the effort she put in to stay close and to know what was going on in our families’ lives.  She cared so much for everyone's well being.  I want to live my life by her example.  She had such a way of letting you know and feel how important you were to her and how much she loved you.  I see now how important it is to let people know how you feel about them.  You can't wait for tomorrow; do it today.  Marnie did that.  I never questioned what I meant to her.  Whether it was with words or deeds, I just knew how much I meant to her and how much she loved me.  She meant the world to me.  I love her with all my heart! She was kind and caring.  She loved unconditionally.  She always made you feel special.  She had a one-of-a-kind smile that truly did light up the room.  Her hugs were the kind of hugs that got you through until the next time you saw her again.  Most importantly, she was BEAUTIFUL inside and out.  She was always a protector and loved fiercely those closest to her.  Our Marn was just so special, she touched so many lives. She was an angel here on Earth to our family, and now she is our sweet angel in Heaven.

The Morgan County Council has agreed with moving forward on hiring someone to help with the county’s economic development goals.
"We have difficulties in the county," Councilman Lyle Nelson said. "We are hailed as the county that is difficult to do business in, or get a business started in. I have heard horror stories of those that gave up trying."
He said the answer to turning that around is to hire at least a part-time economic development director or consultant.
"We need someone on our side that can actively recruit," Nelson said. "We need to put some money into someone here consistently that answers the phone."

Morgan, Mountain Green firefighters join forces with outside crews to battle blaze

Just after noon on Tuesday Sept. 4, 2012, Austin Larson was working at the rock pit in Mountain Green when he heard an unusual noise across the street that got his attention. When he confirmed there was smoke he quickly went to the Mountain Green fire Station, where he works as a volunteer fire fighter. Larson retrieved the fire engine and made his way back the short distance to the home to find that the fire was already fully evolved. By this time calls were coming in from a postal worker who was in the area, a 1st Bank employee from the bank next to the house, and others who viewed the smoke and flames.
As the house burned firefighters from surrounding areas were called in including two trucks from Weber County and a ladder truck from South Ogden. Brush trucks helped with a grass fire that spread behind 1st Bank, Mountain Green Branch. Twenty-eight fire fighters worked on the blaze before they were able to stop it around 4 p.m. The house continued to smolder until about 6 p.m. A crew remained at the scene overnight and was able to control two or three flare ups during the night, reported Dave Rich, Morgan County fire chief.

Pamala Sutton Bindrup has lived in Utah since she was 5 years old—first in Washington Terrace and then Mountain Green.   She and her three sisters were raised in the Terrace.  Her father was a linotype operator for the Standard-Examiner.  She remembers when she was a child going down to the newspaper office, and he would run a slug with her name on it which could be printed with ink.  When computers replaced linotypes, her father retired.  She said that the keyboard for the linotype was totally different than a computer keyboard. Her mother managed S & H Green Stamps, which was on Harrison Blvd.

Each summer we watch with grim fascination as wildfires burn across the western United States. This summer has proved to be as bad as any.  Fires in Colorado and other states have consumed both wild lands and homes with equal ferocity.  You may wonder, “What would I do if I lost my home to a fire?  Would I be prepared?”

The Morgan School District’s financial situation is so complicated, it is going to take a combination of many options to solve, or even squeak by from year to year, school board members agreed.  The solution rests on raising taxes, a voted leeway, and possibly even more cuts that could directly affect the classroom.

Setting goals can help people move forward in their lives; however, one of the main reasons for not meeting goals is not having a doable plan. A goal should be SMART -- specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely with a plan to achieve it. Consider these ideas when setting weight loss goals.

Generating Income in a Low Interest Rate Environment
If you’re getting ready to retire or are currently retired I’m sure you are well aware that we are in an environment with record low interest rates.  You have probably been to a bank or credit union and have asked them what type of investments they have that can provide you an income now that you aren’t working, I’m guessing you were a bit disappointed.

“Good people of Morgan Elementary School. We live in a great nation full of opportunity, full of optimism, full of hope”, begins JA Biztown mayor Nate Preslar. “ In recent months I believe that our freedoms and liberties have been slowly deteriorating. Unemployment is rising, the income gap is growing, and men and women march on Washington D.C. in protest. Yes, the Dow has dropped tremendously, and in Greece, Neo Nazis are gaining political power. The world and its future may appear bleak to you. Don’t give up. Coming to J.A. Biztown, you may see a town that is insignificant, that is just another fieldtrip. I on the other hand, see a town of hope, a town of prosperity, a town of promise, and a town of opportunity waiting for us. Students don’t believe the future is bleak, where others see disparity, I see opportunity. How do we harness this opportunity? We start today! I believe in America and the free market.  I believe in competition and hard work, and I believe in you! Don’t give up, there is opportunity awaiting us in life and in this town. God bless you, and God bless America!”

A wellness committee was formed last year before school started to decide how to motivate the employees to incorporate healthy habits into their life. The name of the program is “Seven Steps in Seven Months: Healthier Habits = Healthier You”.  The goal of the committee for this year was to unite and encourage the employees of Morgan School District to improve overall health and wellness.

Several months ago, for his Eagle Scout project, Carson Rupe sent out a flyer to the Mountain Green community, to collect toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss and drugstore eye glasses for Haiti.  Some of these items were dropped off at his house, and he picked up others.  All in all, he gathered three big boxes full of dental floss, toothpaste and toothbrushes for a dental team (part of the Haiti Healthcare Initiative) to give to patients.  Part of the HHI project was to teach Haitians how to brush and floss, since the rate of dental problems is so high. For his Eagle project, Carson also gathered a number of reading glasses, and enough cash contributions to purchase over 60 more pairs of reading glasses.

George and Carol Lancaster were both born in 1947, no more than one city away from each other; George was born in Murray, Carol in Salt Lake.  George was raised in Crescent, attended and graduated from Jordan High School while Carol attended three different high schools, Olympus, Hillcrest, and graduated from Cyprus; her family moved around to different areas of Salt Lake.  It was in the ninth grade when they finally met each other.  George sat behind her in Social Studies class. Carol and George had become such good friends that as Carol was moving around, George was always making sure he found her so they could keep in touch.  Over the course of four or five years these two occasionally dated, corresponded by letters back and forth and developed a very close relationship.  This close relationship, in fact, later resulted in marriage in the year 1966.

Dr. Vern Kilbourn is a long time resident of Morgan and Morgan’s first Chiropractor. He was the first Chiropractor to ever be issued a business liscence in Morgan County. He is a 2nd generation chiropractor in his family, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Ozias (nicknamed “Banz”) to the community. His grandfather who was a graduate of Palmer Chiropractic School in Davenport Iowa, had finished his graduate degree, but was not allowed to practice because he didn’t have a high school diploma, and the state required a high school diploma to practice, yet he already received his doctorate degree. His grandfather was not allowed to be “grandfathered” into the practice, and not allowed to charge for his services, even after he had obtained a doctorate degree. His grandfather practiced for free in the community and offered many hours of unpaid service to help others.

It was a somber atmosphere in the courtroom as Garth Day entered with his attorney, Amy Hugie.  As U.S. Magistrate Judge Samuel Alba read each one of the six charges aloud to him, Day responded with a weak and barely audible whisper.  With each charge presented to the defendant, the judge confirmed that Day understood it and also , understood that the government is required to prove their case against him beyond a reasonable doubt.  Day was also informed that if he changed his plea to guilty, he would waive his rights to a trial and therefore relieve the government from having to prove their case.  In each case Day responded in the affirmative.

Sheriff Breshears has had many challenges in his first two weeks in office.  As he took office he was already faced with a department poised to hire four new officers to fill vacancies left by officers who had left to pursue higher pay, to replace his position, and to evaluate potential replacements for an officer on leave.  He had stated in his campaign that his goal was to persuade the county council to raise the pay for officers to try to head off the turnover problem faced by the department.

When I was younger it was not unusual to hear someone on the playground assert, “It’s a free country!” This was usually done when they were doing something that was not quite right, but they wanted to do it anyway. As I have grown older I have discovered that there is often a misperception of the freedoms we enjoy.

We recently completed ‘mid-term’ elections.  As usual Morgan citizens responded well with a relatively high percentage turn out.  As a community we, like the rest of the nation, were mostly focused on the national scene.  It is, after all, what we see and hear in the news.  Unfortunately, sometimes we do not pay as close attention to what is going on in our own county as we should.

I would like to respond to the accusations from a recent letter to the editor that said that, Jon Hellander running for House District 53, is a puppet of a number of state legislators. It is absurd to think that a strong willed, principled individual like Jon is submissive to anyone.  In fact, he has influenced me to reconsider my position on the state-wide property tax equalization proposals that I have vigorously supported during my four years in the legislature.
