For some, the American military in Germany is a mystery. By participating in the 2014 Rheinland-Pfalz-Tag, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command is able to break down the barriers of its fences and show the local nationals everyone is a part of the same community.

The 4th of July parade is something all of Morgan County looks forward to each year.  Usually the excitement comes from the children standing on the side of the road with bags hoping they will be filled to the brim with Independence Day treats.
While this was as true this year as any year, one young lady in the crowd was about to get something much more valuable than candy thrown from a float. A diamond ring was in her future.
Cormick Breshears wanted to make his marriage proposal to his girlfriend, Whisper Givan, a fireworks show so unique and special that she, along with the town of Morgan, would never forget.
He strategically planned it so Whisper never questioned him about riding in the parade float with the Morgan High School wrestling team.  After all, he was the assistant coach, so it was only appropriate.  “To say that I was nervous is an understatement, I was terrified!” said Breshears.
He continued saying that keeping it a secret was no easy task.  “There were so many times where I almost slipped and said something about it. A couple of times I did slip and ask my parents something right in front of her,” commented Breshears.
As the fully decorated Razor approached, all the cameras came out. Givan said, “I think I was the only one in the dark.  Everyone else in my family knew.” But as the Razor began to turn, she started to wonder why the wrestling parade float was so girlish and void of any wrestlers.

Over the course of its 30-year career, the Morgan High School marquee has deteriorated drastically.  Students and staff have nursed the sign along using tape, white out and other remedies to keep it going, but they are finding these methods inadequate to keep this archaic sign up to date.

Marjorie Virginia Lepley Porter, born October 24, 1941, peacefully passed away with her family in the Morgan Valley she loved on June 16, 2014.  She grew up traveling with her military family, having cherished memories of many places, her favorite being Japan.  She graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1959 and St. Benedict’s Nursing program in 1962.   She loved her nursing career and those she took care of over her 50 years of service. Her most memorable nursing moment was meeting the love of her life as a patient while working in the hospital.

Over the course of its 30-year career, the Morgan High School marquee has deteriorated drastically.  Students and staff have nursed the sign along using tape, white out and other remedies to keep it going, but they are finding these methods inadequate to keep this archaic sign up to date.
Because of this deterioration, the Morgan High School Student Body Officers have come up with a plan to replace the old sign with a new digital marquee.
This updated marquee would provide the school, as well as the rest of Morgan County, a better way to advertise ongoing events that take place in our town.
To make this happen, the officers need the help of the community.  The cost of the new marquee is $30,000. To assist with that large figure, they have a plan that involves different donation tiers: bronze-$100; silver-$500; gold-$1,000; and platinum-$5,000.
In order to give full recognition to generous donors, bronze and silver level donors will have their name or company name engraved on a plate on the front of the marquee. Gold and platinum donors will have an entire brick to themselves on the base of the marquee to engrave their company name and logo. This will ensure that the entire school and community will be reminded of that generosity each time they approach the school.
In order for the new digital marquee to be in place by the time school starts this fall, donations need to be turned in by July 20, 2014. Please submit donations to Morgan High School, P.O. Box 917, Morgan, UT 84050.

Every year hundreds of thousands of Americans celebrate Independence Day with a big bang of fireworks.  You can find stands on just about every street corner during the holiday, but where you choose to buy your sparklers and fountains makes a difference to one local family.
Morgan’s neighborhood firework stand is sponsored by Acme Discount Fireworks, but run by Morgan residents Jaime and Gina Grandpre.
Shopping local helps unite our community. “Knowing that you are supporting your neighbors and friends, gives us all a sense of pride in where we live,” commented Gina.
In support of shopping local, the family decided to change locations this year.  Instead of being housed in the parking lot of Ridley’s, the firework stand will be located in the lot next to Front Street Gifts and Crossfit Unknown.  This lot is owned by a Utah resident, resulting in a much better deal on the lease of the property, according to the Grandpre family.

When I purchased the newspaper about four and a half years ago I did not understand the genealogical value of community papers. Unlike the large daily newspapers that are struggling to stay alive, community newspapers are, in general, doing well. They provide content that can be found nowhere else. There is very little content online or being written, other than in social media, about the events at a local level. This is the staple of community newspaper content.

As many high school seniors are looking forward to their graduation this May, some previous graduates are looking back, way back. The Morgan School District will again be honoring past educators and employees of the district and their families at MHS commencement exercises and are looking for nominations.  Since 2008, 12 outstanding individuals have been honored for their service to the community in years past. Their names have been added to the stunning Trojan monument located just outside the MHS office. Their contributions and legacy should not be forgotten or go unappreciated. We are excited to recognize excellence from the past in the Morgan School District and look forward to the names of this year’s recipients to be included on the beautiful Trojan monument.

Pioneer Day is the perfect time to pull out family books of remembrance and journals.  I did just that this past week.  It pulled me in and reminded me of grandparents who have been gone for many years.  Two hours later I had read many pages and reminisced about the time I spent with my grandmother before she died.  What I did not expect to find, although I knew my grandparents were both born in Morgan, was a history of Enterprise.  It was a surprising history to me. My grandmother, Martha Vera Mecham Ogden, recorded many of her memories and this  was among her writings.

“The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle…If there is no struggle, there is no progress.  Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.”

Chances are, most people in the community have benefited from the service, works, and influence of the Morgan Lions Club.  Through their many acts of service, sweet smiles and genuine joy have been reflected on the faces of Morgan children for many generations.  George Francis jokes that the Morgan Lions Club has been around “since the time Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” While the exact date is not known with certainty, the Morgan Lions Club has been around for a very long time, well over 80 years.  Throughout these years it has touched young and old alike. True to their motto “We serve”, the Morgan Lions Club has sponsored many of the celebrations Morgan residents have grown up with and continue to cherish with their own children and grandchildren. Lions clubs can be found serving throughout the world. In fact, they are the world’s largest service club organization. Although the parent organization is an international club, the Morgan Lions Club has been especially focused on the needs of our own community. They have structured the service they provide and activities they sponsor in a way to connect very personally with the people of Morgan.

Wednesday, March 21, started the track season for the 2012 edition of the Trojan Track Team.  Morgan hosted a five team region meet with Bear River, Tooele, Ben Lomond, and visitor St. Joseph.  Weather is always a concern for a track meet but the athletes had sunshine and warmth and no wind, a great day to begin the season.  The first meet is always exciting because there are newcomers to the team that are just seeing their first track competition, and the returning team members are anxious to see if they can improve on last years’ marks.  Coaches have the very same feeling as the athletes; what will the new members bring to the team and how well will the older athletes perform with an added year of experience.

In the year 1859, David E. Henderson, Issac Morris and Jonathan Hemmingway families formed the nucleus for the town of Richville. Lured to this spot in 1861 come Thomas Rich (1817-1884) who had the honor of having the town named after him but moved to Porterville. David Henderson built the first log house down by the east canyon creek. When other families came they were advised by David Henderson to build on higher ground because of the flooding, which he had experienced from the 1860 spring runoff. This same year John H. Rich, Gillerpie Waldron and Solomon Conley joined the group, followed by Albert Douglas Dickson and a year later his two brothers, William and John and his father, Billa Dickson in 1862. Add to the list names of George W. Taggart, George Seaman, Henry and Morgan Hinman, and later on the Oluf Rose, Sanford Colson Porter, Baltzar Peterson, John Wood, Fredrick Clark, George Brough, and William Smith families and others who were attracted to this beautiful place. I have often wondered how they were able to communicate with each other as many were Scandinavia and others were English.

The areas of South Morgan and North Morgan were first settled in 1960-61, and were incorporated into Morgan City in 1868. Morgan’s business district had it origins along Young Street and State Street in South Morgan. Some of these first businesses included a mercantile and blacksmith shop. Although the business district was in South Morgan the main route into the area was located on the northeast side of Weber River. This created a dangerous situation to receive merchandise and supplies from out of the area. It was very hazardous to cross the river, especially in Spring prior to the first bridge over the river.

Dr. Vern Kilbourn is a long time resident of Morgan and Morgan’s first Chiropractor. He was the first Chiropractor to ever be issued a business liscence in Morgan County. He is a 2nd generation chiropractor in his family, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Ozias (nicknamed “Banz”) to the community. His grandfather who was a graduate of Palmer Chiropractic School in Davenport Iowa, had finished his graduate degree, but was not allowed to practice because he didn’t have a high school diploma, and the state required a high school diploma to practice, yet he already received his doctorate degree. His grandfather was not allowed to be “grandfathered” into the practice, and not allowed to charge for his services, even after he had obtained a doctorate degree. His grandfather practiced for free in the community and offered many hours of unpaid service to help others.
