The beautiful cemetery that stands on the hill behind the LDS Ward on the old Highway Rd. in Mountain Green was the original pioneer burying grounds for the pioneer community. It was laid out in 1860 on land that was owned by David Bowman Bybee.  He sold .45 acre to the settlement of Mountain Green to provide a place of burial for early settlers.

City Mayor Jim Egbert and Council Members Shelly Betz and Tony London appeared before the county on Tuesday.  The city has been raising funds for more than a year and has raised more than $66,000 from county residents and businesses to date to build a splash pad in the county.  Member Betz said, “When the mayor and I were first elected there was the lack of a water facility here in Morgan County…We did a lot of field trips to visit splash pads…We talked Weber Morgan Health and the Department of Water Resources…We decided that this is something we absolutely could do in Morgan County and that is was possible through donations from the community.”  She reported that the splash pad design was developed through significant community input.  Splash pads are designed for children of all ages and they also work well for children with disabilities.

When you drive by old homes in Morgan County, do you ever wonder how long they have been there and what tales they could tell?  One beautiful old home I have always admired is “The Hubbard House” on 5648  W. Old Hwy Rd., Mountain Green which is 85 years old.  The home was originally built by the Ostler family in 1927.

The majority of information about the Thornleys, Stuarts, and Ostlers is taken from Mountain Green, the Beautiful.  Additional information was provided by Carol Warner Ralphs, Bob Poll, Bob Huerta and Don Hubbard and the Morgan Co. Historical Society.

If being involved in something for 72 years makes you an expert, then Josephine Clark would definitely be an expert in 4-H!  She is one of the many people in our community that has helped shape 4-H in Morgan County. Josephine’s 4-H experiences have ranged from being a member, a leader, and a mother of 10 children who were very involved.

Reed Wilde was born in his grandfather’s home on the ranch in Croydon in 1928. The doctor hadn’t arrived yet, so the visiting teachers attended to his delivery. He attended school in Devil’s Slide by riding in a horse drawn wagon until the 2nd grade when they finally got a bus. But it only went as far as the pavement, so Reed had to walk half a mile to catch it. When Reed was in the 3rd grade, they got electricity. When he was a junior in high school, they finally got indoor plumbing and a gas furnace when they moved to a larger home.

Compiled by Dana Wilde from the contributions of Sherolyn Gause, Evelyn Jones, Jamie Wilde, and Ryan Windley.

The summer of 1952 Mary Ellen was dating a local boy who was excited to have his older cousin come visit.   The two 20 year olds came up with plans for Harold who was 24 and on leave from the United States Air force.  They wanted to go on a couple of double dates, but the only available girl was only 16 so they decided to have Mary Ellen go out with Harold and the other two would go out together.  The foursome went to a dance at Lagoon, and two weeks to the day later Mary Ellen and Harold were married! The rest was history…

Mountain Green has  2 book clubs in the Highlands/Monte Verde area. One club is chaired by Carole McCain and has about 9 ladies attending. They meet monthly on the first Tuesday.  They met this week and discussed The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. The book covers 3 generations.  A young girl is sent to Australia without her parents.  Her grand-daughter researches and discovers her grand-mother’s mysterious past in England.

This month they are reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond--a “Halloween” story set in Puritan times.  For November they are reading The Ladies Number One Detective Agency (the first book in the series) by Alexander McCall.

One of the ladies presents 3 books each month and the group selects one to read for the coming month.  If you are interested in the joining the group, call Carole.

This last week my mother-in-law passed away.  She was like a second mother to me.  I will miss her tremendously.  We lived next door to her for nearly ten years.  She was my wife’s best friend.

As I thought about her  this week I considered the impact she has had on her family.  Verlene taught her children about the most important things in life.  She was not a genealogist, but rather was a family historian.  She shared stories of her ancestors that taught her children the most important lessons in life.

We are now one week closer to the Northeastern region Sterling Scholar competition and the pressure is building.  First drafts of portfolios have been submitted for proofreading, mock interviews scheduled, and plans to shop for business attire made.

For the fourteen scholars at Morgan High School, the process has been a blur, but perhaps one of the most valuable experiences of their lives thus far.

Without further ado, it’s time to meet this week’s four Sterling Scholars:
