Wasatch High School hosted the Wasatch Invitational at Soldier Hollow on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Trojan Cross Country team faced one of the most challenging courses of the year on this high altitude mountain terrain originally designed as the Olympic cross country skiing venue. Athletes pushed themselves to the limit while tackling the steep hills and constantly changing running surfaces. To help mitigate crowding, race organizers divided the junior varsity races into underclassmen and upperclassmen categories for both the girls and boys, in addition to the varsity races.

The Murray Invitational stands out as one of the largest races on the schedule with more than 50 high schools competing. On Friday, Sept. 6, the Morgan High Cross Country team participated in the competition. The race is characterized by large crowds and many false starts. Several times before each of the rookie, JV, and varsity races, the starting gun goes off only to be followed by a chorus of guns several seconds later indicating someone has fallen and the race needs to start again. This is emotionally and physically taxing on runners as they sprint start several times before a clean start allows them to settle into a race pace. Add to this temperatures in the high 90s and the event can be exhausting.

The Trojans followed up last year’s six-point overtime victory over the Wildcats at South Summit with a thrilling, down-to-the-wire 34-27 win in Morgan Friday night.
Morgan junior defensive back Kade Carrigan’s interception on the 10-yard line with no time left on the clock preserved the Morgan win.
“That was wild. I feel like I played in that one,” said Morgan Coach Kovi Christiansen, who appeared physically and emotionally spent after this one. “They (the Wildcats) are fantastic. I don’t know if there is another 2A team to compare with them. They are awesome.”

After a six-year hiatus, the demolition derby came back to Morgan County. Historically, Morgan has had a rich tradition of hosting demolition derbies. Although the derby this year started out small, we were fortunate to be able to bring it back. Organizers are hopeful that last Thursday’s event will have increased interest not only from spectators, but also for future drivers who want to test their driving skills in the arena. Hopefully this was the first of many, and through the years it will be able to grow.

Morgan School District (MSD) employees had an opportunity this year to be involved in a new wellness program. A wellness committee was formed last year before school started to decide how to motivate the employees to incorporate healthy habits into their life. The committee decided to adopt a similar program developed by the Wasatch School District. The name of the program is “Seven Steps in Seven Months: Healthier Habits = Healthier You”.  The goal of the committee for this year was to unite and encourage the employees of Morgan School District to improve overall health and wellness.

One walking trail in Mountain Green parallels old highway, directly east of the Mountain Green exit. This walking trail was a community effort and took the dedicated work of many individuals to make it a reality.   In 1993, it was recognized by members of the community that a safety hazard existed for young children, walkers, and bike riders who traveled from Monte Verde, Polls and the Highlands to the Old Farm Market or from one subdivision to the other. Pedestrians had to walk on the edge of old highway road which is the main thoroughfare through Mountain Green and connects to Trappers Loop. Especially because of the increased traffic from Ogden Valley due to the completion of Trappers Loop road and the fact that this traffic had to use the old highway in order to connect with the interstate, an effort was made to solve the safety hazard—by creating a walking path.

The Morgan High Basketball team started the season with three games last week.   On Wednesday they traveled to Juan Diego to play the Soaring Eagles who moved to region 10 this year.  It was Juan Diego’s second game of the year having beaten Bear River on the road by three points.  The Trojans were off to a great start with Garrett Kuns hitting his first four baskets for eight points. The Trojan defense was strong, holding Juan Diego to two baskets and only seven points.  The Trojans led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and during the second quarter Boston Saunders scored all of Morgan’s 9 points putting the team in the lead by three at halftime. In the third quarter Juan Diego outscored the Trojans 19-8 taking an eight point lead, but the Trojans mounted a great comeback during the fourth quarter. Down by 10 with fewer than 3 minutes to go, Jake Miles caught fire and scored 10 points from the field to help gain the lead.  Finishing it off, Colby Skinner hit a huge 3 and the team made 8 of 9 free throws to ice the 55-49 victory.

Surrounded by friends, family, coaches and teammates Bailey Farris signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for Division I volleyball powerhouse Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Farris received a full ride athletic scholarship and will begin her college  career next fall as an outside hitter for the Wolverines. Farris was courted by several instate colleges including Utah State and University of Utah but says that her decision was pretty easy. She has great respect for the coaching staff and she has watched them (UVU) dominate college volleyball in the state of Utah for the last several years. Additionally, Farris feels right at home on the UVU courts after being a part of the Morgan Trojans for back to back state championships there.

This season has been the best I have seen these boys play with their hearts.  As this season comes to an end, we see the tears of dedication and of sacrifice come to a halt.  The last region game against the Spanish Fork Don’s was a hard loss at 20 to 35. However it was fought well and the Morgan Varsity football made some very strategic plays and grew together in trusting each other, trusting the coaches, and showing unity as a team. Spanish Fork commented that this game and playing against the Morgan Trojans, was the toughest game they have played against all year.

On Monday night Sept. 12, 2011, there was a bear sighting in the Mountain Green Neighborhood of Monte Verde. It was around 10:30 P.M. when the sighting of the black bear occurred. One of the home owner’s goats was killed by the bear. The homeowner went out and shot at the bear as the bear was trying to go for his other goat. The bullet hit the bear, but the bear wandered off, wounded up into the hills. Wildlife management is still in search of the bear as it’s still on the loose. If you see any sightings of the bear please report to the local authorities.

Our Trojans have done it again! Gaining another win from the Wasatch Wasps. With a win of 34 to 10. Being able to participate in our school sports is always a rush, especially when the Trojans display teamwork and dedication to their passion. The offensive line gave a lesson on creating holes to bring home this victory. The speed of #4 Joe Kippen, combined with the power of #34 Bridger Anderson and #11 Jose Patino created a hole that the Wasps couldn’t climb out of. Once again Morgan showed this on Friday as the offensive line created holes for 4, 34, and 11 and through the crushing run through tackles of #77 Davey Glover and #41 Boston Saunders.

The following is the 8th part in a series of “The History of baseball in Morgan County”. Most of the information is taken from a book by Paul Stewart called “Baseball in Morgan County: The Early years”.

On September 6th, 1946 a Championship game was held in Morgan county between South Morgan and Richville. The game was played at the county fair grounds before a full house. In 1946 there were not any floodlights for the field so the length of the game was at the mercy of the sun. With the first pitch at 2:30 in the afternoon, there was little chance of running out of daylight. This game was the exception.

Finally blue skies and sunshine greeted the Region 11 track athletes as they met, May 11-12, at Ben Lomond High School to battle for the Track and Field Championship.  It has been several years since region was held at Ben Lomond, but with the new surface on their track and adjustments made to some of their field event areas, they were ready to host the big meet.

A man who can wear many hats (or in this case many uniforms), Zane Gray is finally hanging up one of them.  Over the last three years Zane has served as the Regional Commissioner for Morgan County American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), but in June he will be retiring.  AYSO serves approximately 550 of Morgan County’s finest youth soccer players, ranging from four to nineteen years of age.  These players can be seen each weekend in the spring and fall on the fields of the Morgan North Stake Bowery and Kent Smith Park in Mountain Green.  It is probably the largest athletic organization in the county, yet little has been said about the man who has lead these efforts with no remuneration for his work.

On May 6 and 7,  Trojan Track athletes loaded the bus and made the annual trip to the BYU Invitational.  This was the 101 year of the meet.  To get to BYU athletes have to meet certain qualifying standards set by the invitational. It is always a great place to be and this year the weather was warm and inviting.  Many PR (personal records) were attained and the weather could have contributed to the good performances. This was the warmest track meet of the year and a welcome change from the 40 degree rainy, cold,  meets of March and April.

May 14, 2011

On Saturday April 30, the track teams attending the Morgan High “Pocket Change” Invitational found snow laying on the field and one inch of snow in the stands.   But some blue sky and sunshine was also a welcome guest.  Everyone pitched in with snow shovels and cleared the stands and the throwing areas of the snow and the thirteen teams that made the trip began the days competition.

In the early years of baseball in Morgan County almost all of the communities had teams. One such team was from North Morgan. I don’t think there is a parent who doesn’t like to watch their son or daughter play sports. Can you imagine an entire team comprised of 10 of your boys? The North Morgan team were all the sons  of the LDS Stake President Daniel Heiner. His sons were Sylvester, Brent, Charlie, Henry, Roswell, Hamner, John, Moroni, George and Heber. Apparently none of his boys could throw hard or straight enough because they had to bring in Thomas Fry and Arthur Francis Jr. and another young man from Ogden to fill the position.

As I mentioned in last weeks article baseball gradually made its way west in the late 1800’s. The Cincinnati Red Stockings went on a tour of the western United States and played exhibition games. As a result of these games many people were introduced to the sport of baseball.

It’s that time of year for high school hoops players, win or report to your spring sports coach. Last Friday our Trojan Boys showed they would like to keep it indoors for a few more games!
I had a chance to catch up with coach Jim Wiscombe on Thursday before the game. We discussed briefly the Region 11 champs season and how the team is feeling as they move into the state playoffs.

Waterfowl hunt starts Oct. 2

Don’t let the first two weeks of the duck hunt fool you -- plenty of ducks will wing their way through Utah’s marshes this season.
Despite good water conditions, the number of ducks that nested on marshes near the Great Salt Lake last spring was down 30 percent from 2009.

Tanner, on the mound…checks the second base runner.  He assumes the pitcher’s stance.  His bended leg draws up.  As he lunges leg and arm toward his target, he hurls a fast ball…it’s high and inside.

Usually when Wasatch comes to Morgan there is a very close game. The same thing happened last Friday, for the first three minutes, and then it was all Morgan, as they sailed away to a huge victory.

Usually when Wasatch comes to Morgan there is a very close game. The same thing happened last Friday, for the first three minutes, and then it was all Morgan, as they sailed away to a huge victory.
Quarterback Colby Skinner threw an amazing pass to Jed Rowlan (see photo above) for a 47 yard pass early in the game and Chase Peterson kicked the point after, giving Morgan an early lead of 7-0 with 8:52 still in the first quarter.
Then at the end of the first quarter, Randon Prochnow ran a four yard run for the touchdown with Peterson' kick good once again.
