The last few months have brought many changes to the Morgan City Council.  The resignation of Mayor Jim Egbert resulted in bringing Morgan City their new mayor, Ray Little.  The domino effect of Little’s appointment to the mayoral seat was that his council seat was left vacant.

When I purchased the newspaper about four and a half years ago I did not understand the genealogical value of community papers. Unlike the large daily newspapers that are struggling to stay alive, community newspapers are, in general, doing well. They provide content that can be found nowhere else. There is very little content online or being written, other than in social media, about the events at a local level. This is the staple of community newspaper content.

While preparing the year in review piece for last week’s newspaper, I really was amazed at all the things that took place in Morgan County during 2012.  Sometimes I get stuck in the weekly rut of attending meetings, listening to recordings, writing stories and editing the newspaper.  The chance to look at every newspaper published by The Morgan County News in 2012 gave me the opportunity to step back and really get an over-all picture.

For as long as anyone can remember, the Lion’s Club has invited Santa to visit Morgan County.  The Boy’s and Girl’s committee puts the event together, but everyone pitches in to help.  Candy bags from the Sweet’s factory are put together during the regular Lion’s Club meeting to pass out to each child and after they visit with Santa, hay rides are provided by the Thurston family and their Clydesdales.  The Lion’s Club would like to thank the fire department for providing Santa’s transportation to the event, Morgan County for the use of the building and for taking care of clean-up and The Morgan County News for advertising. Dear Editor,
Regarding Mr. Hornes letter to the editor that was published in the June 1 edition of The Morgan County News, I would first suggest that there are about 6.6 million Americans that would take great offense to your comparing of anything going on in the U.S. to the holocaust and the mass murder of 6 million people in WWII.

Family Fun Night at the library is the perfect evening to relax and spend time with your family while encouraging learning and thought.  Monday, May 21 will be the second Family Fun Night and there are high hopes it will build on the success of the previous event.  The last affair brought a crowd of over 80 participants and turned the library into a carnival.  This coming Family Fun Night will transform the library into a dream emporium. The night won’t make you nod off because lots of fun activities have been planned to explore the things we wish and hope for.  The idea was born from a patron interest survey that showed a need for family specific events.  The staff created the idea for a quarterly Family Fun Night with guests from the community.

Shirley was raised in Farmington and Kaysville by her parents, Albert and Virginia Udy Epperson. She attended Davis High School until her family moved to Morgan, where they owned and operated the Morgan County News and the Summit County Bee. After graduating from Morgan High School, Shirley attended the University of Utah where she majored in journalism and lived in the Alpha Phi Sorority House. Shirley had beautiful red hair and a personality to match. In 1954, she was crowned as Salt Lake City’s Miss Flame, a beauty pageant held exclusively for redheads.

It is often said that watching or reading the news of the day can be a depressing experience because the majority of it is negative.  The Morgan County News is usually an exception to this perception of the media.  For the most part, the pages of this newspaper are filled with positive stories about the events occurring in the county; celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, academic and athletic achievements, and many reports of people doing good and bettering the community.

Bailey Jo Pfannerstill moved to Morgan from Salt Lake County. She lived in Riverton and Herriman before moving to Croydon four years ago. She has a passion for writing stories, drawing pictures, and watching football with her family and friends, and learning in general. During her spare time she can be found working on stories, reading books, studying for college, playing a few video games, listening to music, drawing or spending time with her family. Her family raises Pomeranians and she has shown them in the AKC Jr. Dog Show Handling competitions, where she won 10th place in the nation. Bailey isn’t your average girl. She likes to hunt, fish, go four-wheeling, watch and play football, play golf, and most things outdoors. Her favorite NFL team is the Green Bay Packers (Go Pack Go!). She plans to go to college for Journalism and would like to write a series one day. She loves her internship at The Morgan County News where she will write about the football games and other things along the way, and hopes to excel in it.

When I was younger it was not unusual to hear someone on the playground assert, “It’s a free country!” This was usually done when they were doing something that was not quite right, but they wanted to do it anyway. As I have grown older I have discovered that there is often a misperception of the freedoms we enjoy.

After spending a great deal of time and effort searching for a new superintendent, the Board of Education decided that the most qualified candidate was already in the district.  Wednesday evening Ken Adams was named the new Superintendent of Schools for Morgan County replacing Ron Wolff who will begin serving as the superintendent in Box Elder County on July 1.

The Morgan County Fair is a 99 year old tradition of the community, and the nearly century old tradition grows and improves with each annual event.
However, before Morgan had its own fair, the residents of the county joined with the residents of Davis, Weber and Box Elder Counties.  These counties, of the Intermountain Fair Association, met and displayed their exhibits in Ogden City.

Since my husband, Don, and I purchased The Morgan County News, we have published 32 newspapers, and it’s definitely been a lot of work. When that deadline is coming for the newspaper to go to the printer, it feels like… Do you ever have that dream where you’re running as hard as you can from something and you just can’t get away?

In nine years of being a publisher of weekly newspapers, I only went on one vacation. On that week, I went to great lengths to make sure that a friend, a very reliable friend, would make sure the paper was completed and sent to the printer by the deadline.  I went over with him each step in the process over and over until I felt satisfied he understood everything.  He, however, was ready to forsake any and all forms of the written or published word whatsoever.

Dear Editor,
Brad Richards' letter to the County Council, as printed in The Morgan County News on September 3 edition, voiced his concerns about the functioning of the Board of Appeals (BOA), and a recommendation for resolution.

Dear Editor,

This column was a blog post last August while I was not working for The Morgan County News
“I think he must hate me.” I had this thought often when I saw, heard mention of, or thought about one subscriber to the newspaper I was running.

Morgan County Single Adults ages 31+ held their first PicNic and PowWow in the Park on Sept. 7th.
The Ball is now Rolling for Morgan LDS Single Adults! It was a nice turnout for our first event. We got lots of good feedback and input for what we want to see in the Morgan Valley for our Single Adults 31+.
