With all the changes happening within the walls of the Morgan City offices the past few months, one can expect a period of transition.  There have been many misgivings about the 4th of July celebration with all these changes, but Morgan City officials are happy to announce that the show must go on.

There are not many people still alive today who can say they have actually been in flight in the belly of a B-17 bomber.  Morgan resident Alan Vesper and his father, Nick, can now mark that off their bucket list.

The Ragnar relay starts at the Utah State University football stadium in Logan and ends at Park City High’s football field.  Part of that 197 mile stretch came right through Morgan County.  Over 1,100 runners came through Morgan on Thursday June 20 and Friday, June 21, either on foot or supporting their teammates in a decorated SUV.  Teams of six to 12 people take turns running all day and through the night. There were several teams from Morgan valley this year.  It is a tough race and not all teams finish, so congratulations to those who persevered!

Springtime is a good time to rid ourselves of items that we no longer need or use but would be of value to others.  This year, why not donate those usable items to the Morgan Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers for their annual yard sale?  The yard sale will be held on June 15 on the corner of the Walker Mortuary from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I had a great experience earlier this week.  My son has shown some interest in family history.  My wife has ancestors in England that we have been researching for some time and I was stuck on where to go next.  I invited my son down to the Family History Library and we spent about two hours with a research consultant in B-2 (the British Area).  One of the research consultants helped us and I learned a new technique for finding ancestors and learning more information about them.  In the space of  less than two hours we were able to identify more than thirty new ancestors we had not found before and gain clues about many others.

Like the United States, the British have taken regular censuses. The first censuses were taken far back in history and were primarily designed so that the king or queen would know how many soldiers they could marshal during wartime and to assess the total property which could be taxed. In England, the first census that contains genealogical data is the 1841 census.

There is a troubling trend worldwide, for genealogists, that seems to be taking root here in the United States.  For many years, The National Archives of the United Kingdom has been making money on the records over which they have stewardship.  They have entered into partnerships with commercial entities and receive royalties for many of the records that are published online.  The National Archives of Sweden has followed suit and is now charging for access to their records.

Veterans Day 2011 comes once in a century this year on 11/11/11. With this remarkable day in history, where we celebrate our veterans throughout the nation and different wars, I wanted to post some of the letters that have been sent to me from people throughout the United States from veterans, soldiers and individuals who support our troops.  On my side job, I work as a songwriter with an organization called Project Troops- Artists Who Care. We do concerts for soldiers and veterans, and have been involved in fundraising to help with sending packages and letters to our troops. We often get letters to give to the soldiers and veterans, and I wanted to share some of these sentiments provided by veterans, and supporters of our troops for this Veterans Day.  It is not enough for us to merely stand by and take our freedoms for granted, we must realize for what we enjoy today, someone has paid a price, and is paying the price for our freedoms today. Thank a soldier, write a letter, send a package, to let them know of your gratitude.

I am thankful for the opportunity we have to think of the good and positive aspects of our community and tell each other, by means of this newspaper. We all know some wonderful people that are in the Morgan area and one of my favorite people is Larry Turner. He is quite often standing by his bike and waving all that pass by. No matter what kind of day we are having, a wave from Larry with his big smile always makes things better.

Mountain Green has  2 book clubs in the Highlands/Monte Verde area. One club is chaired by Carole McCain and has about 9 ladies attending. They meet monthly on the first Tuesday.  They met this week and discussed The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. The book covers 3 generations.  A young girl is sent to Australia without her parents.  Her grand-daughter researches and discovers her grand-mother’s mysterious past in England.

This month they are reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond--a “Halloween” story set in Puritan times.  For November they are reading The Ladies Number One Detective Agency (the first book in the series) by Alexander McCall.

One of the ladies presents 3 books each month and the group selects one to read for the coming month.  If you are interested in the joining the group, call Carole.

Vital records refer to the records of birth, marriage, and death.  They represent the key genealogical phases in an individual’s life, and are the most universally kept records.  The history of vital records in the United States has been, and continues to be, one filled with inconsistencies.  This has made US research more challenging.

I love the holidays and the traditions handed down through the years from family. It is a great time of year to do family history.

The United States began as a relationship between the colonies that later became states.  In the beginning, this relationship was one of a loose confederation primarily to fight the war of Independence.  Once the Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation, the entity we now know as the United States came into existence.  Even with this change the states retained much of their authority and responsibility.
