You’ve heard the story before. Girl meets boy. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl proposes. And soon the couple finds themselves standing in a county clerk’s office asking about marriage licenses. Marriage records are an incredibly valuable resource for genealogists. Marriage records can give information about family members, dates, places, and more. FamilySearch.org has a large collection of records relating to marriage records. In this class, we will discuss the history of marriage records, learn about marriage records from different localities, and then talk about the resources of FamilySearch.org relating to marriage.

Morgan City is short at least $814,000 in taxes owed to a special improvement district by Mount Joy, LLC, a local developer now involved in bankruptcy court proceedings.  Without payment, Morgan City officials may have to cut costs or reduce services to make a $103,000 bond payment June 1.  Developer Gray Jensen said things are in the works that could help the city make the payment.

“The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle…If there is no struggle, there is no progress.  Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.”

FamilySearch has quietly published free access to all of the United States Census, just as the 1940 project gets seriously underway.  More than a year ago FamilySearch announced a joint project with Ancestry.com to improve the currently published censuses.  Ancestry provided their index to the censuses and volunteers at FamilySearch did a second index of all the names.  The results were then arbitrated to create a better quality index.  FamilySearch created a new set of higher quality digital images from the original microfilm for many of  the years as well.

They talked with Mr. Wolfe and presented him a gift for the school, of a flag that has flown over the United States Capitol on behalf of the students and faculty of the Morgan Schools. “Senator Lee was kind enough to surprise us and present the school with the flag that was flown over the capital,” said Mr. Wolfe.

Well, it’s finally here.  On April 2, the United States National Archive released the images of the 1940 census.  Almost immediately the National Archive site was virtually down, it was so slow.  Over the past week the site performance has steadily improved, but it continues to run a little slow.  What is not as well known is that the images are also available on FamilySearch.org/1940census and on Ancestry.com .  Both of these sites are making the images available for free.  If you know where your ancestor lived, you can now find the image in the census.  If you don’t know where they lived you can go to FindMyPast.com who has offered to find your ancestor for you in the 1940 census.  Images will also shortly be available on FindMyPast.com.

Like the United States, the British have taken regular censuses. The first censuses were taken far back in history and were primarily designed so that the king or queen would know how many soldiers they could marshal during wartime and to assess the total property which could be taxed. In England, the first census that contains genealogical data is the 1841 census.

There is a troubling trend worldwide, for genealogists, that seems to be taking root here in the United States.  For many years, The National Archives of the United Kingdom has been making money on the records over which they have stewardship.  They have entered into partnerships with commercial entities and receive royalties for many of the records that are published online.  The National Archives of Sweden has followed suit and is now charging for access to their records.

Surrounded by friends, family, coaches and teammates Bailey Farris signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for Division I volleyball powerhouse Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Farris received a full ride athletic scholarship and will begin her college  career next fall as an outside hitter for the Wolverines. Farris was courted by several instate colleges including Utah State and University of Utah but says that her decision was pretty easy. She has great respect for the coaching staff and she has watched them (UVU) dominate college volleyball in the state of Utah for the last several years. Additionally, Farris feels right at home on the UVU courts after being a part of the Morgan Trojans for back to back state championships there.

Veterans Day 2011 comes once in a century this year on 11/11/11. With this remarkable day in history, where we celebrate our veterans throughout the nation and different wars, I wanted to post some of the letters that have been sent to me from people throughout the United States from veterans, soldiers and individuals who support our troops.  On my side job, I work as a songwriter with an organization called Project Troops- Artists Who Care. We do concerts for soldiers and veterans, and have been involved in fundraising to help with sending packages and letters to our troops. We often get letters to give to the soldiers and veterans, and I wanted to share some of these sentiments provided by veterans, and supporters of our troops for this Veterans Day.  It is not enough for us to merely stand by and take our freedoms for granted, we must realize for what we enjoy today, someone has paid a price, and is paying the price for our freedoms today. Thank a soldier, write a letter, send a package, to let them know of your gratitude.

“If there’s a will there’s a way,” is the Thomsons’ parting words, or motto, after sharing their story of love and life. They got in Janet’s 1931 Ford Model A (a birthday present from Jay) and drove off to get ready for a dinner engagement.

I met them at their hangar at the Morgan County Airport. Inside, Janet introduced “these are Jay’s toys,” which consists of a motorcycle; a restored 1946 Fairchild airplane; a well polished motor boat; and a small plane for grandchildren to pretend to fly. A work area for his tools to keep the “toys” in running order, and for convenience, a sitting area with a 1927 antique refrigerator nearby with cold drinks and a cookie jar that resembles a fisherman’s basket, full of Ginger Snap cookies, on the coffee table.

Vital records refer to the records of birth, marriage, and death.  They represent the key genealogical phases in an individual’s life, and are the most universally kept records.  The history of vital records in the United States has been, and continues to be, one filled with inconsistencies.  This has made US research more challenging.

When many individuals begin family history there seems to be a race to go backwards in time.  It seems like whenever individuals get together to discuss family history the first topic is something like, “My Patterson line goes back to 1620.”  There is peer pressure and some satisfaction in tracing family lines back as far as possible.

Nearly 40% of students in the United States have had, or are having, a challenge, in learning to read.  The good news is that many reading problems can be prevented or solved with a good reading teacher in conjunction with parents.  The bad news is that many children have to wait for their turn with reading teachers and parents who just do not have the time to help.  This waiting can be demoralizing to children as they fall further and further behind. So what can be done?
