Although the controversy over the “common core” has been going on for a couple of years, my conversations outside of fellow educators have been limited to only a few individuals.  That began to change the night of the Republican Party Caucus meetings in my precinct.  I have been amazed at the lack of understanding and misinformation possessed by several individuals that I’ve talked with; thus the impetus for this response.  The purpose of this response is not to change the minds of those who are opposed, but to simply provide those who are honestly seeking information with the other side of the story.

In the five years Niel and Candice Ekberg have lived in Morgan, they have made a big impact in the community. Niel is a state trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol. Candice is a local EMT and a track and field coach at MHS. For each of them, getting to this point was a journey of self-discovery and pursuing meaningful paths. As their story unfolds, it is notable to observe their biography continues to evolve as the result of hard work—a testament that dreams may be accomplished through passion and perseverance.

Mr. Mills is our new choral director at Morgan Middle School and Morgan High School this year. At the middle school he teaches Mixed Choir and Advanced Choir and at the high school he directs Concert Choir, Millennial Choir, and Ovation!, the school’s chamber choir. Mr. Mills graduated from Cottonwood High School and went on to graduate from the University of Utah. His fun, happy personality fits right in with his students and when asked why he chose to teach choir he replied, “Because I’ll never grow up.” He loves spending time with the kids at school. Mr. Mills is a fabulous pianist and a wonderful asset to the schools’ choral program.

The 4-H had a day camp that was different than any other.  It had the eager 4-H members, enthusiastic 4-H leaders, certificates of achievement, prizes, treats and competitions, but…it also had robots!

The 4-H leaders, Justin and Melanie Andrews, introduced robotics to the participants with “the LEGO Mind Storm Kits.” Justin pointed out to the kids that, “these kits cost $300 each. We were able to borrow six of these kits from Jeff Richins of North Summit School District.”

This spring and early summer produced a number of changes in our administrative team.  Late in the month of May, Ron Wolff announced his intentions to step down as Superintendent.  In mid-June our beloved Morgan Elementary Principal, Laraine Whitear lost her battle to cancer.  Both individuals have left voids to be filled in our system.  The positive influence for good they have given and shared with our community will be felt for years to come.
