Becky was born in Ogden, Utah, at the old McKay-Dee Hospital on June 29.  She is the youngest of seven children (four sisters, two brothers) and was raised on a dairy farm in Henefer, Utah, where she milked cows, fed calves, rode horses, rolled and hauled bales of hay, caught poly-wogs, played with baby mice and lived outside everyday making mud pies, and playing with animals and cousins.  Her closest sister is six years older than she and there is a 20-year difference between Becky and her oldest sister.  She was an aunt two times before she was born and her nearest neighbors were five miles away.  She loved the open spaces and the hard work ethic that was instilled in her by her family and being able to grow up on a farm.

Cheridyn Prochnow, daughter of Brian and Cheryl Prochnow, has been chosen as Morgan High School’s General Sterling Scholar.  Cheridyn has contributed to the high school by participating in choir, FBLA, DECA, and Academic Olympiad.  She has been a member of the Troyette Drill Team and the cheer squad, currently holding the position of Cheer Team Co-Captain, and has served as Freshman Class Vice President and the Interact Service Club Public Relations officer.  Her favorite class in high school has been chemistry because it has so many real-life applications.  She loves participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, running, and four-wheeling; doing jigsaw puzzles; people watching; and doing unexpected things.  She is proud of being voted “the person you want to be stranded on an island with”.  Cheridyn’s most memorable high school experience was, without a doubt, skydiving!  Cheridyn will be attending Utah State University and majoring in biological engineering.

In the five years Niel and Candice Ekberg have lived in Morgan, they have made a big impact in the community. Niel is a state trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol. Candice is a local EMT and a track and field coach at MHS. For each of them, getting to this point was a journey of self-discovery and pursuing meaningful paths. Helen Smedley has lived in Mountain Green since the 1960s and remembers some of the first homes being built in the Highlands subdivision. She says she was born in the best little town in America –Fillmore, Utah.  She said “it’s drier than a bone” and that her dad used to say “frogs are 25 years old before they know how to swim.” Despite growing up during the Depression, she had a wonderful childhood. Her family grew their own food and had animals, so they were self-sufficient.  “We didn’t know we were poor because everyone else was to,” she added.

The accreditation process is well underway at Morgan High School.  As we prepare for the visiting team to arrive on March 13th and 14th, we have focused on the steps to make sure that our school is on track and ready to go.  One of the first steps was to analyze our departmental effectiveness using the new guidelines provided by the state accreditation training team.  Each department met and answered a series of eleven questions regarding various aspects of instruction and learning within their areas of expertise.  Teachers were asked how they help one another throughout the department and school to better meet the needs of students.  In reading the different responses, I am reassured by the strengths and talents of our faculty and staff.  We have an amazing group of teachers who not only understand their content area, but also know and understand their students.
