Last season, the Morgan varsity baseball team had one of its most successful seasons in recent history, going three games deep into the state playoffs and knocking off several 4A and 5A schools in non-region play.  

On April 15, the Morgan SUP met for their monthly meeting at Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn.

Tyson Lindley, a junior at Morgan High School, recently won the Hinds Quick Stop March Madness Challenge by correctly picking Louisville to win the NCAA basketball championship and by selecting many of the early-round and final-four winners.

Westbound lanes on Interstate 84 were closed Tuesday when a semitruck carrying solar panels rolled over.

“It’s all about family” is a fitting motto for the Skinner household. Joey and Lisa Skinner have been blessed with four wonderful children:  Shantelle (married to husband Nate), Colby (currently serving a mission in Mexico), Cameron (a high school senior), and Tucker (eighth grade). A new highlight in the Skinner family has been the addition of Shantelle and Nate’s baby girl, Brielle. Joey and Lisa love their new role as grandparents. 

If you are interested in getting out and seeing the beautiful scenery in our area up close and personal, a new club has been developed to help you achieve that.

The third grade has been learning about simple machines for the whole month of January. As a celebration of what they learned, each student made their own simple machine to display at the simple machines fair for the rest of the school as well as their parents.  The students’ creativity and ability to apply what they learned was very impressive. The machines were all different shapes and all different sizes, but they all were able to scientifically do work using one or a combination of the six simple machines.  The projects ranged anywhere from catapults, to dog feeders, to homemade mouse traps.  It was a great event to take part in. 

 
Morgan - Clarence George “Tic” Francis, 93, died on April 2, 2013.
He was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Morgan, Utah, to William Weisbrodt and Cecilia Knight Francis, but celebrated his birthday on Dec. 7.  He married Elna Wright on Jan. 24, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple.
 
A viewing will be held Friday, April 5, 2013 at the Rock Church in Morgan, 10 W. Young St., from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be at the Rock Church on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 12 noon with a viewing prior to the funeral from 10:45 to 11:45 p.m.
Interment in the South Morgan Cemetery.

Sister Brooklyn Eggett has been called to serve in the Brazil, Manaus mission. She will be speaking in the Morgan 6th ward, Porterville chapel, on March 24, at 1 p.m. She reports to the MTC in Brazil on March 27, 2013.

Barbara W Hortin, age 83, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on February 22, 2013.  She was born in Pocatello, Idaho, to LeRoy Wilson and Amy Seelos Wilson.  They later divorced and Amy married Toby Shaw and they moved to Coalville.  Mom married Hal Hortin and they had five children.  Mom worked at various jobs throughout her life.   

Fifth-grade students at Mountain Green Elementary created art projects for the wintery month of January that combined the beauty of visual art with the beauty of words. 

The Bert Wilkinson family would sincerely like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. We appreciated the food, visits, cards, flowers, attendance at the viewing and the funeral and the many stories we were told about Dad that we hadn’t heard before.

Our precious baby boy, Trey Oreste Zuech, was born February 12, 2013, to his loving parents, Andrew Todd and Sheri Marie Cook Zuech. After touching our hearts forever he returned to his Heavenly Father.  

Elwood (Woody) Michael Mamanakis, 65, passed away February 12, 2013. He was born on October 31, 1947, to Ellen and George Mamanakis in Ogden, Utah. Elwood graduated from BYU.

Following an administrative investigation conducted by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, the officer who fired a shot that struck the left eye of Kristin Nicole Biggs has been cleared and returned to duty in December.

A new year begins. All of the holiday decorations have been taken down and put away, kids have gone back to school, and adults have returned to work. The start of each year is rich with ambition, hopes and dreams. The whole year is before us and anything is possible. What makes the difference between accomplishing the milestones we earnestly set out to achieve and letting our resolve slowly dissipate into inaction? Resolutions, goals, targets, objectives—however you refer to them—help you get to where you want to be.

The coming of the new year brings new health care resources to Morgan City residents.  The new Morgan Health Center opened its doors to patients on New Year’s Eve.

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather and friend, Bert Wilkinson, 83, passed away January 10, 2013, in Morgan, Utah, from complications of dementia.  He was born on February 28, 1929, in Peterson, Utah, to John and Alice Myrtle Wood Wilkinson.

The family of Daniel J. Baird would like to extend our deep gratitude and appreciation to this community for the many acts of kindness and love shown to our family during the time of our loss.  Thank you for the flowers, meals, cards, visits, phone calls and for the love and support shown to us during this difficult time.

Words cannot begin to express the gratitude we feel for all the love and support shown to our family during the passing of our dear mom. For the cards, food and flowers from neighbors and friends, we are truly grateful. 

Local fifth-grade girls basketball team picked up first place medals over the holidays, playing in the North Summit holiday tournament in Coalville. 

The family of Roy Baugh would like to thank the community for your love and support you have given during Roy’s long illness. Special thanks go to neighbors who have gotten calls in the middle of the night and came to help. 

The county has selected a consultant to handle the large Snowbasin application.

The Morgan Conservation District is pleased to announce Quincee Dorius as the winner of the 2012 Conservation poster contest.  Quincee is in the fourth grade and attends Mountain Green Elementary.  

In the five years Niel and Candice Ekberg have lived in Morgan, they have made a big impact in the community. Niel is a state trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol. Candice is a local EMT and a track and field coach at MHS. For each of them, getting to this point was a journey of self-discovery and pursuing meaningful paths. As their story unfolds, it is notable to observe their biography continues to evolve as the result of hard work—a testament that dreams may be accomplished through passion and perseverance.

East Canyon State Park Rangers James Lowe, Elizabeth Kovacs, and Jeff Dale were presented the Challenge Coin Commendation from Hill Air Force Base Colonel Henke of the 748th SCMG/419th Squadron for saving the life of Air Force employee Craig Feasel. The rangers were presented challenge coins, received a standing ovation, and were made honorary members of the squadron.

Elder Jordan Thomas Nelson, son of Brett & Kara Nelson, has been called to serve in the Cape Verde Praia Mission, Portuguese speaking, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 

Elder Trevor Scott Heath, son of Randell and Tina Heath, has been called to serve in the France Paris Mission. He will enter the MTC on December 19, 2012.

Morgan High wrestlers hosted North Summit at Morgan High on Thursday, Dec. 6. Morgan did well beating North Summit in front of their home crowd.  They wrestled again on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8, at Roy duals. The varsity team placed 12th beating out Brighton by one point. 

Geraldine Durrant Rollins Taylor, 78, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

Paden and Karlee would like to announce their marriage on Dec. 1, 2012, in the Bountiful temple.  

If you are wondering what to get for that certain person on your list, you should really consider a book written for specifically for Morgan County residents.

Kristine Nicole Biggs, 41, was booked into the Davis County Jail Saturday, Dec. 1, after being released from a local hospital.  Biggs lead Morgan County deputies on a high-speed chase through three counties before attempting to ram a Morgan Sheriff vehicle in South Weber.  A Morgan deputy ended the situation when he fired his weapon into the windshield of Biggs’ GMC pickup and struck Biggs in the left eye.  The deputy has been put on paid administrative leave while the case is being investigated by the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.

Morgan County School officials promised constituents they would look into a dual immersion language program at area elementary schools.  As part of that promise, the community councils at both Morgan and Mountain Green elementary schools have written a survey to measure interest in the area.  

NRCS participated in the annual Environmental Immersion Day sponsored by the Fairchild Challenge, Thanksgiving Point and USU Extension.  An estimated 330 high school students from 10 schools gathered at Thanksgiving Point Gardens on Oct. 3 to gain some hands-on experience in various science disciplines dealing with the environment.  The Fairchild Challenge began in 2002 to foster interest in the environment by encouraging students to appreciate and value the beauty of nature, develop critical-thinking skills, and to understand the need for biodiversity and conservation.

Huntsville resident and former military pilot Darren Tidwell, age 50, perished in a plane crash Nov. 15. The incident occurred just five miles north of the Morgan County airport shortly after take-off.  According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s office, Tidwell was flying to Logan for a project he was working on when his aircraft went down.  The cause of the crash is still under investigation.  

Morgan resident Natalie Quinlan, 40, had recently obtained her motorcycle driver’s license and her own motorcycle.  She had always wanted her own motorcycle, and had been working up the gumption and skill to ride on Interstate 84. 

The family of Marnie Stark would like to thank the community for the outpouring of love and heartfelt support we have received.  Words cannot express the support we have had from the community. The amount of loving gestures have been crazy.  They have come from friends, family and even people we didn’t know.  We would not have made it through this without all this love.  The family would like to thank the Morgan 6th Ward Relief Society, Walker Mortuary and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.  We rest easier knowing our little butterfly is free to fly.

There has been quite a storm of interest in the mountain biking and BMX industry in Morgan as of late.  There is a new mountain biking team featuring students from Morgan High and local resident, Jason Johnson, has proposed a new bike track in the area.  This may be a great idea for kids like Brewer Snedden.

After a Utah State basketball game Rob Colvin met Suzanne Udy for the first time. Rob who is from North Ogden, and Suzanne who is from Salt Lake City (a Skyline High School graduate), were both enrolled in the university. Rob knew he had met someone special and was immediately interested in getting to know her better. However, he didn’t have a scrap of paper or a pen with him to jot down her information.  Being the creative person that he is, Rob used an aluminum foil gum wrapper in his pocket to scratch down her phone number. It took two tries to make the phone call but fortunately he was able to find the right combination of numbers. 

Elder Dane Craig Carter has returned from the Korea Daejeon Mission, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is the son of Craig and Lisa Carter of Morgan. He will report on his mission on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Morgan 7th Ward.

Loydene Berg and her son, PJ, lost their home to an electrical fire last month on Sept. 4.  The home was a complete loss.  This included her Yamaha Grand Piano which had a lot of sentiment attached to it from her late father and her husband Peter, who was murdered 12 years ago at Chevy’s Restaurant in Salt Lake City.  The home was also not insured at the time of the fire, due to a suspension in the insurance coverage until a rain gutter was replaced. The work had been done, but had not been reinstated before the fire destroyed the home.

George and Gwen Francis of Morgan will be honored for their 60th wedding anniversary by their children on Saturday Oct 27, with an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Field Street Church, 240 S. 300 W. in Morgan. The celebration will also be in honor of his 80th birthday. Family and friends are welcome. 

Once a week for three weeks, a student in a Morgan High School classroom passed out while attending Mr. Rock’s health class during first or second period.

Wasatch Storm U13 Premier soccer girls won two large state tournaments this summer.  

In 5th grade, the students at Mountain Green Elementary School learn about American history. Near the beginning of their studies are early explorers. Students were put into pairs and chose an explorer to research about. They needed to find out the basic birth/death date, birthplace and what country the explorer sailed for. They also had to find why their explorer started their voyage, what they discovered, what they are most famous for and other interesting information about that explorers life. The students had four days to research information from websites, short readings and the encyclopedia. Students then used the information they gathered to create a poster and present their explorer to the class. The class took notes on each explorer. This information will later be used to write an informative essay on “Why People Explore.” Students discovered many interesting things such as Christopher Columbus was not actually the first European to land on the Americas, how America got its name,  how the lack of vitamin C caused the dreaded scurvy, how some explorers mysteriously disappeared, and how some men even spent months searching for cities of gold or a fountain of youth.  This was a very fun learning activity for the students.

Matthew Richard Gallen has been called to serve in the Canada Vancouver Mission.  He will speak Sunday, Oct 14, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Morgan 10th ward. Matthew is the son of Jodi Walker Gallen and Matt Gallen.

On Oct. 13, 2012, Marilyn Liddle Gillmore passed away peacefully at age 79, in Morgan, Utah, from age-related complications.  Marilyn was born Nov. 25, 1932, to Wallace and Alfarette Sorensen Liddle in McCloud, California.  

In both of Morgan’s only contested local races, the incumbents came out on top. In the Morgan County School Board Precinct 1 race, Jody V. Hipwell beat out opponent Lydia Nuttall by just 23 votes. The final count was 418 to 395.

For the backyard neighbors, it was an interesting race from the primary vote earlier this year until Election Day.

For School Board District 3, incumbent Ken A Durrant won with 427 votes over Clay Ivan Rich’s 295 votes.

As the Morgan community lays one of its own to rest today, the man suspected of causing her death sits behind bars.
Jeffrey Dene White, 43, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Weber County Jail on first degree felony murder and two counts of third degree felony charges of commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child. 
According to Ogden Police Lieutenant Danielle Croyle, two children under the age of 10 were present during the murder of Marnie Franich Stark, 38.  She is the daughter of Morgan locals Matthew Joseph and Jessie Franich.
The Ogden Police Department responded to an “unattended death” Oct. 20 on the 1300 block of Douglas Avenue.  During the course of the investigation, Ogden Major Crimes Detectives determined there was evidence to support the cause of death as a homicide.
Stark was pronounced dead at McKay-Dee Hospital that day.  White was her live-in boyfriend.

Brad and Valarie (Rich) Dinkel are excited to have been called to serve an LDS mission for 18 months to the Philippines Baguio Mission. They will be speaking in the Genola 3rd Ward Building Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. They would like to invite any Morgan friends to join them on that day. Following the meeting, they request that you join them for lunch in the Genola Park.

Savana Wilkinson, daughter of Dane and Wendy Wilkinson of Mtn. Green, has chosen to marry her best friend, Brance John Brown. Brance is the son of Jim and Nanette Brown of Morgan. Savana and Brance will be married Oct. 5, 2012, in the Bountiful Temple. In case of oversight, please join them in their celebration at a reception held in their honor that evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Highlands Chapel in Mtn. Green. Savana is a 2010 graduate of Morgan High School, and Brance graduated from Morgan High in 2009. Both are presently attending Weber State. Brance served a mission in the Chile Rancagua mission.

Although the Morgan County Council prepared an offer to purchase the former bus garage property on State Street, the Morgan County School Board decided to accept  another offer from a commercial entity.

Elder Parker Van Wagoner recently returned from serving in the Lima Peru East Mission. 

Ten art students from Morgan Middle School have been selected to send their artwork to Japan for the International Children’s Art Exhibition.   Students enrolled in Art II classes at the middle school were invited to participate.  Each student created an original work of art following this year’s theme “Vehicle.”  Works were made from a variety of media: pencil, charcoal, watercolor, pastels, chalk, and colored pencil.  A panel of judges made up of administration and faculty then selected 10 pieces to represent the school at the exhibition.

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, surrounded by her family.  She was born July 27, 1923 in Henefer, Utah to Osmyn (Os) Merritt Wright and Zelda Lucy Richins. She married Clarence George Francis on January 24, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity.

Thank you seems so inadequate to express our appreciation for the acts of kindness, large and small, that we have received. 

Oliver J Archibald was born Aug. 31, 2012. He would like to thank all the wonderful people that prayed and were concerned for him. 

Emilia Ballantyne and Zachary Egan will be united in marriage on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012.

Fifty years ago, September 14, Rex and Janeal Wilkinson started their eternal family.  Captain of the football team and a dancer on the drill team, these two high school sweethearts were meant to be together.  Their love has truly been strengthened through the years.

Over that last few months, I have read and heard numerous people discussing the need we have for more businesses in the Morgan Valley.

Mountain Green resident David Sawyer, who recently returned from serving with the U.S. armed services in Afghanistan, presented both Morgan County and Boy Scout Troop 576 with American flags for their service.

Hannah graduated from Morgan High School and Morgan High LDS Seminary. She graduated from Weber State University with a degree in sociology and is employed at Morgan High School and the Utah State University extension office.
Jordan graduated from Morgan High School and Morgan High LDS Seminary. He served an LDS mission to Oslo, Norway. He is currently employed by Centerpoint Construction and plans to attend Weber State University this winter.
After a honeymoon to Las Vegas, the couple will be making their home in Morgan.
In case of an oversight, Hannah and Jordan would love for you to come and enjoy the evening with them.

Ralph S. Carter celebrated his 95th birthday at a family dinner this week.  Ralph was born in Porterville, Morgan County, Utah on Aug. 27, 1917, to Levi Alfred and Clara P. Carter.  He graduated from Morgan County schools.  Ralph married Fern Porter on Dec. 13, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS temple.  

I would like to thank everyone who helped with the 2012 Morgan County Fair.  It would not have been possible without all of the people who donated their time to ensure the fair was a success.  I greatly appreciate all the support and dedication of the fairboard members and committees.  

The Morgan High golf team continued their Region 11 season Aug. 15, at El Monte golf course in Ogden. The eight varsity players that qualified for Morgan were: Seniors - McKay Kearsley, Aaron Babbitt, Jake Miles, Juniors - Rhett Ballantyne, Garren Miles, Sophomore -Jason Bledsoe, Freshmen - Russell North, Braxton Ovard.

Morgan Elementary School is looking forward to another great school year. We have some great new additions to our faculty this year. We would like to welcome Mrs. Waller, who has been a lifelong resident of Morgan. She will be teaching fifth grade. We are also excited to have Miss Booker join our elementary family. She previously taught in the Ogden School District. She will be teaching fourth grade this year.

Jean and I were excited to have made plans to see, eat, watch the families and just have a wonderful time at this year’s Morgan County Fair.  We were greeted with a smile at the east gate, and were directed to the disabled parking.  It was still pretty far to walk, but luckily we had our canes.

40 years ago our parents met in Riverton, Utah, when they were both 18 years old. Ken and Chrys Rindlesbach met through a blind date that Ken’s sister and Chrys’ sister set up, because they were in the same ward. 

Elder Landon Philip Ray Carter, son of Craig and Lisa Carter of Morgan, from the Morgan 7th ward, has accepted a call to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will serve in the Louisiana Baton Rouge mission.

Parker Randall Ross, son of Mitch and Teri Ross, has been called to serve in the Texas Lubbock mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will speak on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Field Street Chapel. He reports to the MTC in Provo, UT on Aug. 15, 2012.

On Aug. 25, 2012, the 4th annual Focus Four Run will be held in Roy at 4000 South 1900 West.  This event was established to remember John Carter, Cody Odekirk, Lydia Silva and Jeff Reppe who passed away in 2008 while traveling during a humanitarian project to Guatemala.

Morgan City is the first recipient of a new award from the Utah National Guard.   Colonel Brown told the city, “I am so thankful to the city for what you have done in helping my family out with our utilities and just knowing that they were safe here in this small community.”

New city council member Michael L. Kendell was sworn in on Tuesday at the city council meeting.  Kendall is replacing council member Lynn Mickelsen, who recently passed away.  

With a strong background in finance and a focus on volunteer service, Tina Cannon hopes to make a difference on the Morgan County School Board.  Cannon is running for District 1. Cannon is a professional accountant who worked at a public accounting firm for many years.  She left the firm to spend more time at home with her children.  She and a partner run their own accounting firm, where she provides services to businesses and is able to work out of her home and be close to the needs of her children.  The change has also allowed her to do more volunteer work.

The Morgan 4th of July parade had a new twist to it this year.  All townships were invited to create a float and enter it into the parade.  The floats were judged and winners were announced during the evening entertainment at the football stadium.  First place, and winner of the Grand Prize trophy, went to Round Valley second place went to Peterson and third place went to Porterville.  Honorable Mentions were also awarded to Enterprise, Stoddard and Taggart.  The Morgan 4th committee appreciates all the time and effort that went into creating these floats and would like to thank all those who participated in this challenge. 

Barbara Joy Whitear Palmer, 81, returned to the arms of her loving Heavenly Father on July 5, 2012.  Barbara was born in Peterson, Utah, on March 9, 1931, to Albert and Clara Whitear.  She married Quenton James Palmer on April 16, 1948.  Together, they had three children, Cheryle (Randall) Manning, Wendy (Larry) Farr, and Gary (Kathi) Palmer; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Lyn London and the late Larry London are excited to announce the marriage of their daughter, Lori, to Chad Michael Tarbet, son of Lee Filbert and Cheri Smith on Saturday, July 14 in the Oquirrh Mountain temple.  In case of an oversight, please join us for a celebration from 7-9 p.m. at the Mountain Green Stake bowery located at 4180 Cottonwood Road.

Crishelle Stegelmeier, daughter of Daren and Marcelle Stegelmeier, has been called to serve in the Fort Lauderdale mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She reports to the Provo MTC July 18.

Leon LaMadeleine has seen the challenges that women have in balancing their efforts to achieve family goals while also trying to meet their personal needs.

At a ceremony just after the flag raising on the fourth of July, individuals from various branches of government in the county gathered to reaffirm their commitment to supporting the families who have individuals serving in the armed services.  “We owe it to our veterans, we owe it to those who are serving our county and protecting us,” said Mayor Egbert.  

 
Morgan County Fire Warden Boyd Carrigan was happy to get multiple calls from people passing by on the freeway who noticed a grass fire in Mountain Green on Friday.
“If you see smoke of any kind, call.  A lot of people think someone else will do it,” Carrigan said.  “I would rather it be a false alarm than not be able to jump on it quick enough.”

The Shoshone and Ute Indians made Richville their home during the summer time. For the most part they were friendly and the pioneers shared with them. Some of the journals say, “As they would ride through the area the scalps could be seen hanging about them. These scalps were from other tribes of Indians and not from white men.”

   Leon LaMadeleine is 70 years old.  Forty years ago, he recalls the lower incidence of disease.  Today, it seems, when he calls his relatives, something bad is happening.  Someone has cancer, has had a heart attack, has pancreatitis or kidney problems, has a child with autism, or has lost a job. 

We would like to thank the Morgan community for all the calls, visits and services offered while Lynn was sick and after his passing.  We have been overwhelmed by the amount of love and support offered to our family during this time.  We thank you all.  We are so grateful to be members of this wonderful community.

Thank you to everyone that donated books for my Eagle Scout project. I collected over 1,100 books and all of them were put to use. The elementary students will have a blast reading them. Thanks again for all of your wonderful help. 

Sixty years ago Harold and Mary Ellen met, fell in love, and then were married on May 24th.  During these past sixty years they have raised three children; Grant (Annette) Laughter, Scott Laughter, and Candy (David) Stevens.  They have 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who are their pride and joy.  There will be an open house on May 26 from 5 to 7 p. m. at their home, 830 East 100 South in Morgan.  The family would like to invite all friends, neighbors, and acquaintances to come by and help us celebrate their 60 years together.  Please, no gifts.

The Morgan High Boy’s Tennis Team ACED at Region.  Swish Wiscombe and Ben Holland took first place in 1st Doubles, Nate Johnson and Miles Mecham took fourth place in 2nd Doubles, Ryan Lynch took fourth place in 1st Singles and Taylor Clark took third place in 2nd Singles. 

Morgan City broke ground this week on the new splash pad.  It is expected to be completed by the end of June and will be available for use in time for the fourth of July celebration.  There will be no cost to use the splash pad.

The girls from Mountain Green Elementary School had a fun filled evening with their dads or grandpas at the PTSO sponsored Daddy Daughter Dance.  This was an amazing night where the girls had the opportunity to get all dressed up for a special evening out with their dads.  The girls and their dads got to fill out a “get to know your sheet” together as well as purchase jewelry keepsakes, get their pictures taken, eat lots of treats and have a wonderful time dancing.  Thanks to the Mountain Green Elementary PTSO for their wonderful support and effort to make this an enjoyable evening for all those who came.

On March 8-10 the Morgan FFA Chapter went to the town of Richfield to their FFA State Convention. Several of them competed in competitions. The Parliamentary Procedures team consisted of six members. They competed by completing a 10 minute long demonstration of the procedures that are used to run an official meeting.

Dance and tumbling in the form of expression as it is given, can be appreciated best when watching the students practice or attending one of their performances.

Family Fun Night at the library is the perfect evening to relax and spend time with your family while encouraging learning and thought.  Monday, May 21 will be the second Family Fun Night and there are high hopes it will build on the success of the previous event.  The last affair brought a crowd of over 80 participants and turned the library into a carnival.  This coming Family Fun Night will transform the library into a dream emporium. The night won’t make you nod off because lots of fun activities have been planned to explore the things we wish and hope for.  The idea was born from a patron interest survey that showed a need for family specific events.  The staff created the idea for a quarterly Family Fun Night with guests from the community.

The Morgan Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers had a remarkable presentation in their May meeting given by Rod Stephens.  Stephens lives in Morgan and is a postal inspector for the U.S. Postal service.  He is an officer in the law enforcement branch of the postal service.  He has jurisdiction in all matters infringing on the integrity of the U.S. mail.  His group of inspectors have a long, proud and successful history of fighting criminals who attack our nation’s postal system and those who attempt to misuse it to defraud, endanger or threaten the American public.  

The seasons of our life are vast and varied.  Some days are full of blue skies and cool breezes, while others are cloudy, dark and cold.  Of course we know that each season is necessary to not only keep the circle of life  of refreshed, but renewed.  

Local residents gathered to honor those who served to protect our freedoms at the annual veteran’s recognition day celebration.  The day started out with a flag ceremony carried out by Morgan County’s American Legion Post 67 and VFW Post 6154 which included Jim Nickerson, Karl Abbott, Jay Garfield, Gordon Smith, Vern Kilbourn, Royal Lamb, Tom Despain, Cliff Jenkins and Tim Carter.  Following the ceremony, one veteran was allowed to participate in a fly-by in a Stearman Bi-Plane with pilot Doug Compton.

An accident occurred in the construction area last week on Interstate 84 in Morgan County, near the Peterson Bridge. Investigating Officer, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Shepherd explained, “The accident happened about 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17. The construction worker was on foot. He and other workers had their backs to the asphalt roller. For whatever the reason, it couldn’t stop, and the roller had run over one worker crushing him into the road.”  Shepherd described the worker’s injuries as extensive, “he was in critical condition with several broken bones, a punctured lung and a lacerated liver.”

On April 24 and 25 members of our FFA chapter competed in the 2012 Career Development Experiences in Logan. There were eight teams that competed. One of those teams won the state title for this year in the Agricultural Sales contest. Those that were on the team were Luke Larsen, Jake Cannon, Katie Spens, and Megan Stapley.

Elder Brock Kendall, son of Shawn and Carolyn Kendall, has recently returned from the Birmingham Alabama mission.

On Saturday, May 19, 2012, which happens to be Armed Forces Day, the Morgan County Pilot’s Association will be sponsoring a Veteran’s Recognition Day to recognize and honor all veterans from all services. The Pilot’s Association invites all citizens and veterans from Morgan and nearby counties to come and mingle with one another, swap stories and view the static displays of various aircraft and military vehicles. The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. A flag ceremony will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. by our own Morgan County’s American Legion Post 67 and VFW Post 6154 veterans. 

The Gold Family Team (TNT Dynamite) have been relayers for four years.  What is relay you might ask?  Relay is an event that anyone can be involved in.  It is a chance to support the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. You can either join a team or come and join the Party the night of relay, Aug. 10,  at MHS, opening ceremonies start at 6 p.m. you won’t want to miss it!  

Bill and Gaylene Bateman of Morgan are pleased to announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter, Mollie Rose, to Joel David Steven Herrey, son of Per and Eva-Linda Herrey of Kungsbacka, Sweden. The marriage will take place on June 14 in the Denmark, Copenhagen LDS temple. 

Blake Rich and Susan Natalie are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter Kaeleen to Rylan, son of Blake and Geni Rowser. 

Each month Morgan County 4-H has hosted a family craft night at the courthouse.  Crafts have varied and reflect the season.  Aprils craft celebrated Earth Day by planting different kinds of seeds in toilet paper containers to grow indoors until it is warm enough for them to survive outside.  Kelly Carter 4-H Assistant has planned and presented the activities.

The students from Mountain Green Elementary School were pleased to have Rick Tolman, author of the book I Saw A Purple Bubble, visit their school.   Mr. Tolman spent a full day at the school reading to individual classes and talking to the students about the importance of using their imagination.  The students were absolutely delighted with the book and thoroughly enjoyed the time that Mr. Tolman spent talking to them about why and how he wrote the book, the beautiful illustrations that are in the book, and the process that he went through to get the book published.  Author visits are always fun learning events for the students and we appreciate the time that Mr. Tolman spent to help cultivate the students’ love of books.

I just received a letter from Lynn Ostler who was a toddler when their family home was built in Mtn Green.  The home went on to become the Hubbard House.

Sat. April 21, Morgan High School will be hosting their fifth annual track and field invitational.

Six weeks ago any bugs spotted around Morgan Elementary would be squished, swatted or exterminated on the spot.  Now there is a celebrated multi-legged creature crawling through the halls of the school.  

Travis Green of Morgan, and JoAnn Miller or Sandy will be married May 18, inManti. There will be a reception held at 10975 Prescott Dr. in Sandy onMay 19, from 6-8 p.m. There will also be an open house on May 31, from6-8 p.m., and June 2, from 6- 8 p.m. in our home at 398 W. YoungStreet. We would love to visit with you at either event.

Saturday night 3 men, who were illegally fishing on private property, were stopped by Morgan Deputies.  The records were run on all three men, when it was found that one of the men was wanted for 4 warrants for his arrest. The man took off running, and a foot chase evolved. The man ran across the river. The officers called on the state troopers and a canine unit to help in the pursuit. The man was arrested later when the deputies pulled over a vehicle from the same county as the man wanted for the warrants was from. The man in the vehicle was actually the friend called on to pick up his friend who was in hiding. The man driving the vehicle was not arrested as he provided information to police, but the friend who fled from authorities was arrested.

Shaelee Renee Pentz and Garrett Steven Reden will be united in marriage on Saturday, April 14, 2012. A reception will be held after the ceremony at the Rock Church in Morgan. A reception will be held the following Saturday in Valley Center, Ca at the home of the groom’s parents.

On Sat. March 24, a controlled weed burning fire got out of hand, when wind picked up and extended the controlled fire to cause a grass fire. The fire swept fast burning a fence, and part of a power pole.

Morgan School District would like to announce the dedication of the new transportation facility.  It is located at 94 South Commercial Street. 

Mountain Green Elementary School is hosting their annual Reflections Art Competition, and this year they are doing something different.  In order to bring recognition to the students and a greater awareness to the arts, the PTSO is holding an Art Open House on April 12th from 5:30 -7:30.  All of the students who entered will have their work on display at Mountain Green Elementary School as well as the awards they won.  Several artists from the community will be displaying their paintings along with the students.  David Jackson, Laurie Eskelson, Randy Peay, Amy Jones, Joan Triplett, and others will be represented.  There will also be a table displaying local home school students’ artwork.  Come by to enjoy the artwork and refreshments as well as the BUY ONE GET ONE FREE BOOK Fair held in the media center.  If you have questions, please call Amy Everhart at (801) 845-8051.

The county council autorized a budget of $6,000 to pay members of its Swift Water Rescue Team on Tuesday.  The swift water rescue team was formed to manage an increasing number of incidents on rivers in the county.

Writing a personal history can be daunting.  If you are like me, most of your journal entries begin with, “It’s been a while since I have written in my journal.”  Many individuals struggle with writing a daily journal.  A history of your life, however, will likely be the greatest gift that you can leave your family behind.  I guarantee that it will be treasured in generations to come as your life experiences will give them hope, insight, and understanding.

Ever wanted to do or say something that was absolutely crazy? I am pretty sure we all have. Whether it be standing up for what we know to be right or to admit to our crush that we like them. It’s scary and it can decide your future or it can change how you live your life. However courage can be deflected by the fear of failure or of rejection. 

After a long search Shane Stephens and Debbie Sessions were appointed to serve on the Morgan Planning Commission.  The county council has been searching for some time for qualified candidates who are willing to serve. Sessions has been a regular attendee at planning commission and county council meetings and has been a great example of citizen participation in governmetn in the county.

We all know how hard and unfair life is. Sometimes, life really can get the best of us. Unfortunately, it can get so hard that some people can’t find any way out. I’m writing this article due to recent numbers found that more and more teens are taking their own lives due to issues that they endure. 

Students at Mountain Green Elementary School were entertained while learning some very valuable information when Boots and Bunkers came to visit the school. 

RootsTech has become the do not miss conference in the genealogical world.  It brings together the best and brightest from the genealogical and the genealaogical technology worlds in one space.  I have written a few articles about it over the past few months.  

If being involved in something for 72 years makes you an expert, then Josephine Clark would definitely be an expert in 4-H!  She is one of the many people in our community that has helped shape 4-H in Morgan County. Josephine’s 4-H experiences have ranged from being a member, a leader, and a mother of 10 children who were very involved. 

I see the county’s brain trusts have taped the tax payers of Morgan County a cool $55,000 dollars for that joke of a airport. 

I enjoy reading the Morgan County News each week and keeping up to date with friends in the Valley. One of the sections I delight in checking is the Word of the Week, and I find the “Word” for the week, because I usually read the entire issue of the paper.

My name is Jacob Mecham, I am a scout writing this letter for reasons of passing off a merit badge. In this requirement I am advised to write a letter to a newspaper or magazine. I have decided to write this letter concerning the Morgan High School Graduation. 

The annual Easter egg sponsored by The Morgan Lions Club, will be held on April 7th at the Morgan Rec Plex.  Start time is 12 noon, DON’T BE LATE!!! Children 8 years of age and under are invited to participate.  

Elder Dallin Leroy Schenk has been called to serve an LDS mission inthe Florida Tampa Mission.  He is the son of David & Becky Schenk. 

Morgan Crush is a new girls volleyball team, made up of local 6th and 7th graders from Morgan Middle School. The team has been practicing together since early December, and playing in tournaments since the first of the year. They placed 2nd in their division in their first tournament in January, and recently received a silver medal for their play at “The Gym” in West Haven.

Bertie Ricks Smith, 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home of 46 years on March 4, 2012. Bertie was born on November 6, 1928 to Arthur Warren Ricks and Gladys Jenette Huskinson of Sugar City, Idaho. She married William Lloyd Smith in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 23, 1950. 

This section is for all us seniors in high school. It’s almost here guys, GRADUATION! It’s so crazy to think that we are close to the beginning of our lives. But I was thinking about something the other day, how many of us wanted to grow up really fast? I’ll admit, I was one of those five year olds who wanted to turn eighteen so I can make my own rules, my own money, and call my own shots.

Varsity Basketball players Swish Wiscombe and Colby Skinner were selected to the UHSAA Academic All-State Basketball Team for this school year. 

Lindsey Richards, the daughter of Stewart and Gretchen Richards, was selected as this year’s Dance Sterling Scholar at Morgan High School! She has danced for sixteen years, performing numerous times. She won the All-Star All American title in clogging for two years,   was on the All American clogging team for seven years and was recognized as the National Jazz and Ballet Queen of America On Stage. 

Bob and Ginny Finklea have recently returned from serving a mission in the South Carolina Columbia mission.
