New city council member Michael L. Kendell was sworn in on Tuesday at the city council meeting.  Kendall is replacing council member Lynn Mickelsen, who recently passed away.

On Tues. May 1, The Morgan Elementary School had visitors from The White House, even Senator Mike Lee and some of his office staff Larry Shepherd, and Boyd Matheson. They talked with Mr. Wolfe and presented him a gift for the school, of a flag that has flown over the United States Capitol on behalf of the students and faculty of the Morgan Schools. “Senator Lee was kind enough to surprise us and present the school with the flag that was flown over the capital,” said Mr. Wolfe.

In a close result separated by only 16 votes Lynn Mickelson was elected to the Morgan City council. Mickelson previously served on the council for many years. In an election for three council positions, with four candidates running, the following are the results: Cards cast: 315 Total votes cast: 907 ( each voter could cast three votes) 1. Tony London 289 votes (incumbent) 2. Jeff Wardell 264 votes (incumbent) 3. Fred Lynn Mickelson 183 votes 4. DeOrr Peterson 167 votes (incumbent) Write in votes: 4

Brody Caswell, age 12, brought to our attention, that the sign by the phone tower on the east parking lot of the Morgan County Fairgrounds, says “Morgan County Fairgroudns”
The Morgan County News learned from outgoing Morgan County Council member Karen Sunday, that she was made aware of it.  She believes that it happened about five years ago.
Sunday has advised the Fairgrounds Board and asked that they see that the sign is replaced with the correct spelling.

We recently completed ‘mid-term’ elections.  As usual Morgan citizens responded well with a relatively high percentage turn out.  As a community we, like the rest of the nation, were mostly focused on the national scene.  It is, after all, what we see and hear in the news.  Unfortunately, sometimes we do not pay as close attention to what is going on in our own county as we should.

The council met on Wednesday morning and appointed Rhonda Kippen to the county council. Member Karen Sunday moved that Kippen be appointed and Member Al Lundgren seconded the motion. Kippen was appointed with Member Sunday, Lundgren, Kelley, and Hansen voting in favor and Member Mathews and Chairman Creager opposing.

Monday night in a special session of the county council the applicants for County Council District Five were reviewed.  There were two applicants, Donald Matthews and Austin Turner; both are candidates for this position on the council in the fall election.

The city council has been keeping their words consistent with their actions over the past several months.  After the city repeatedly expressed a strong commitment to rejuvenating Commercial Street, this week they have taken some actions to do just that through more beautification.

In the Morgan City Council meeting on Tuesday, a public hearing was held for the 2010/2011 budgets.  There was light attendance by citizens,  however, changes that will affect each resident of the city.  In addition to the budget for the city that was discussed and approved, new rates were set for services from the city.

    Morgan County officially has a new council member as of 9:00 am Monday morning.  Don Matthews was sworn in as the replacement for David Gardiner for District Five by Stacy Lafitte, county clerk.  Gardiner recently resigned from the position when he moved out of the county.

Morgan City awarded the contract for street maintenance on Rose Drive to Wilkinson Construction at a special meeting on Monday afternoon.

Morgan City awarded the contract for street maintenance on Rose Drive to Wilkinson Construction at a special meeting on Monday afternoon.  The city received bids of $51,255 from Granite construction company, $57,974 from Staker/Parsons, $58,175 from Advanced Paving and Construction, $62,110.40 from Post Asphault, and $42,127 from Wilkinson.
