The Morgan School District brought in consultants to inform them how to get their tax levy approved.  They are certainly following the plan developed and strongly advised by Rich County and that is to bombard and propagandize the public with “it is all for the students, the students will suffer and be deprived unless we have more money.” Even one of our school board members has stated that the district may have to declare “bankruptcy” unless the levy is passed.  It appears to me that the district has learned very well from our present national political organizations and that perhaps even Obama could  probably pick up a few pointers from the school district and the school board.

In my opinion, to take more money from the pockets of Morgan residents demonstrates arrogance of the Morgan school board members and Superintendent who want to preserve or expand the status quo rather than looking for ways to cut programs, eliminate waste, and better manage existing tax revenue.

I would love to say thank you for your thoughts, kind words, your flowers, your food, your calls and visits and your friendship that has been shown to me during my illness. I am not use to being ill, but with all of the kindness that has been given to me, it makes me again realize how wonderful people are in Morgan. Thank you again for everything. ShaRon Nelson

Words are inadequate in expressing the gratitude we feel for the outpouring of love and support to our family during the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. For the wonderful tender messages in the cards sent, the lovely floral offerings, all of the visits of neighbors and friends and the food brought to our home was so appreciated.

The last issue of TMCN reported that the Cottonwoods subdivision developer had requested incremental tax funding for a reservoir that he/they want to develop in conjunction with his North Side Creek subdivision.  Incremental tax is the tax difference between the undeveloped land (the bare lot) and the property after it has been developed (i.e., in this case after homes have been built on the lots).

The family of Marnie Stark would like to thank the community for the outpouring of love and heartfelt support we have received.  Words cannot express the support we have had from the community. The amount of loving gestures have been crazy.  They have come from friends, family and even people we didn’t know.  We would not have made it through this without all this love.  The family would like to thank the Morgan 6th Ward Relief Society, Walker Mortuary and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.  We rest easier knowing our little butterfly is free to fly.

Dialogue and debate about what Morgan was, what Morgan is and what Morgan will be is nearly constant and of upmost importance to all of us who call Morgan home. For those reasons there are continual discussions with school board, county and city governments, and Morgan Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC), including more extensive and detailed surveys and community forums such as Envision Morgan (EM).

Morgan County is a buzz with worries of tax increases and what is the School Board going to do to pay for all their expenses.  This is not a fun time to be on the School Board, but I admire them for attacking this problem head on.  I think, I can stand for the county school bus drivers and say “Thank You” to the County for the new Bus Garage.  We have been in need of this facility for years.  The debate is over if it should have been built at this time.  I don’t know how it was paid for but it will be put to good use.  We now have the capability of lifting a bus to do repairs and inspections under it.  This is a huge time savings and cost savings over what the transportation had in the past.  Along with these savings comes the issue of safety.  We have a safe facility to work in.  Thanks to everyone in the county as this facility has become a reality and we “Thank You.”

It is often said that watching or reading the news of the day can be a depressing experience because the majority of it is negative.  The Morgan County News is usually an exception to this perception of the media.  For the most part, the pages of this newspaper are filled with positive stories about the events occurring in the county; celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, academic and athletic achievements, and many reports of people doing good and bettering the community.

A BIG THANK YOU to all of you who were such a big help when we had the misfortune of having a trench cave in. Our hero is Mike Evans for his quick action of getting my head and chest uncovered so I could breath again. Also a BIG THANK YOU to the Morgan EMT’s who were so fast and professional in all they did to help me.

We would like to thank the many friends and neighbors who spent their Saturday morning helping cut, split and stack our winter’s supply of wood. Your service lifted a tremendous burden from our minds as well as our family. A special thank you to Richard Wiscombe for coordinating. Without you this would have never taken place. Thank you to those who have brought wood to our home. Thank you to all! We love and appreciate each one of you.

My name is Clyde Criddle. I have very fond memories of Como Springs, in fact very good ones. I worked for the Heiners for a few years mostly as a pin setter in the bowling alley and other jobs as needed.

The family of Grace Johanson would like to extend our deep gratitude to all of our wonderful friends in the community for their love and kindness during our time of loss. Thank you for all of the cards, visits, and food that was brought to our homes.

I want to personally thank the crew and cast of “Annie” for an outstanding production.  Each member played an important role in the success of the event.  I especially extend appreciation to the parents and community for their attendance and support.  It is my hope that this is just the beginning of an annual event that brings the schools and citizens together at the beginning of each school year celebrating local talent and raising funds for a worthwhile cause.

August 25, 2011

As a former resident of Morgan I very much enjoyed the article in the News about Como Springs.  However, no mention was made of the Sunday band concerts performed by the Morgan High School band.  There used to be a bandstand at the far left-hand corner of the swimming pool and as a youngster I loved watching the band march single file along the edge of the pool to reach the bandstand.  By the time I was a member of the band the bandstand was no longer used for the concerts because the water deadened the sound of the music.  When I was in the band the concerts were played in the center of the park where chairs were set up for us.  Fond memories--not only of the band but of the dances and roller skating!  Also, I was baptized in the indoor swimming pool at Como.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with the 100th annual Morgan County Fair.  It would not have been possible without all of the people who donated their time to ensure the fair was a success.  I greatly appreciate all the support and dedication of the fairboard members and committees.  They are the reason the fair was so successful.  There are so many people who stepped up and worked non stop to make sure things were done.  A special thanks to our families who spent countless hours helping with whatever needed to be done.  Thanks to the County Council members that volunteered to help through out the fair.  I would also like to thank Rod and his crew for prepping the fairgrounds and maintaining them throughout the fair.  If I missed anyone who helped, I greatly appreciated all you did to make the Morgan County Fair the Best Little Fair in Utah.

The family of K. I have a few comments about the front page article about the Morgan County School District Transportation Department being over budget.  We know the main reason for this cost overage is due to fuel cost for an ever growing school system.  The school district is concerned with the future needs of a new school or even two new schools and remodeling cost.  They don’t have the money.  The school district talks about increasing school fees for students.  This school fee idea will only create a few thousand dollars which is nowhere close to the amount necessary to keep up with the cost of education.   I applaud the school district for not asking for a new Morgan County School District Office and Administration building.  They are working out of a small office in front of the Morgan Elementary School.  Good for them.

After reading the article in last week’s paper about the land owner and developer’s frustration I want to thank the County Council for protecting our community. It isn’t easy to stand up for the rules and regulations of our county, but we have a good county. This is the reason we voted you in to protect and take care of us.

Dear Editor,

…and readers.  This is in response to “The Biker” letter in your 6-10-11 issue.  The letter was written to “you”, which, barring further clarification, includes everyone besides the writer, including me.  “I”, and “you”, are found guilty of a lot of indecent, unthoughtful, vile things, culminating finally in cutting the biker off and killing him.  Now I’m definitely not perfect, but I’m not all those bad things, and I’ve certainly never harmed or killed a biker.  I feel like I, and the vast majority of the “you”, have been accused, found guilty, and sentenced, without ever being known, heard, or having a fair trial.

Dear Editor,

June 10, 2011

I saw you; hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.

You didn’t see me; put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

I saw you; pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.

You didn’t see me; playing Santa at the local mall.

I saw you; change your mind about going into the restaurant.

You didn’t see me; attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

I saw you; roll up your window and shake your head when I rode by

You didn’t see me; driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.

I saw you; frown at me when I smiled at your children. You didn’t see me; when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.

I saw you; stare at my long hair. You didn’t see me; and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

I saw you; roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. You didn’t see me; and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

I saw you; look in fright at my tattoos.

You didn’t see me; cry as my children were born and having their name tattooed on my skin and in my heart.

I saw you; change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.

You didn’t see me; going home to be with my family.

I saw you; complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.

You didn’t see me; when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

I saw you; yelling at your kids in the car.

You didn’t see me; pat my child’s hands knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you; reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.

You didn’t see me; squeeze my wife’s leg when she told me to take the next turn.

I saw you; race down the road in the rain.

You didn’t see me; get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

I saw you; run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.

You didn’t see me; trying to turn right.

I saw you; cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.

You didn’t see me; leave the road.

I saw you; waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.

You didn’t see me; I wasn’t there.

I saw you go home to your family.

You didn’t see me, because I died that day you cut me off.

To you I was just a biker, not a person with a family and friends.

You didn’t see me; and now they will never see me again.

Even if you don’t like us, respect our rights to ride what we choose and take a few extra seconds to be sure we are not in “your” way.

This is Hap Fry - We live along the river across from the Clark Farm here in Morgan. I was out taking pictures of the water building up. I found out that a tree had fallen in to the river up by the High School. Herald had told me that it was a huge tree. He had heard that there were huge branches broke off and coming down the river.

Last week an editorial commentary was submitted labeling the Morgan County Airport as a “heavily subsidized” burden on the taxpayers, and a “ridiculous” use of funds for something used by a minority of the county residents.  While everyone is entitled to an opinion and has a right to voice it, a little more research and thought regarding the issues will often alter one’s point of view:

Dear Editor,

Last weekend the Morgan High wrestling team travelled to Delta to compete in an important two-day multi-school tournament.  Unfortunately a couple of our Morgan wrestlers ended up in the hospital due to some fairly serious injuries.  I was at work when I received a call from Coach Allen that our son, Christian, had dislocated his elbow during a match and was on his way to the local hospital.  My wife jumped in the car to make the three hour drive to Delta.

When I was younger it was not unusual to hear someone on the playground assert, “It’s a free country!” This was usually done when they were doing something that was not quite right, but they wanted to do it anyway. As I have grown older I have discovered that there is often a misperception of the freedoms we enjoy.

It is not often that I write editorials. I think most often our role  as a newspaper is to report the news in the most objective way we can,  and allow each person to develop their views. I work particularly hard to ensure that I keep a neutral tone when I write. I have opinions, but I work to keep them out of my articles.

I have lived in Mountain Green for twenty years, and periodically have written letters to the Editor. This will be another occasion in which I will do this again, because we will have a chance to vote for a particular candidate of our choice. However, that isn't true for the Morgan County citizens today. We had two candidates running for sheriff, but one decided to withdraw from the candidacy.

October 1, 2010

I am writing this letter to thank you for putting all the candidates in the paper. That is a great way to help the elections in our community. Also it can show people what the candidates are like and what they want to happen in the community. Thank you for doing that.

Dear Editor,
I have similar feelings as Dave Hansen, Republican Party Chairman for Utah; He expressed his excitement last Saturday at a Central Committee Meeting stating “I haven’t had this much fun in years”.  As I have become more actively involved in politics I would agree with Dave.  People are talking with each other.  Many are realizing their vote does matter and counts.  Your average voter this year is actually voting in favor of a candidate they like.  Our ballet in Morgan is filled with choices.

Dear Editor,

.Dear Editor,
I would like to respond to the accusations from a recent letter to the editor that said that, Jon Hellander running for House District 53, is a puppet of a number of state legislators. It is absurd to think that a strong willed, principled individual like Jon is submissive to anyone.  In fact, he has influenced me to reconsider my position on the state-wide property tax equalization proposals that I have vigorously supported during my four years in the legislature.

One of the things I think that would make Morgan County a better place is a river walk. I would like to see it tie into the ogden river walk. It could start at the park in Morgan and go by Peterson, Mountain Green, then down the canyon.

It is a rare thing to have a real statesman run for public office these days.  However, that is exactly what our current political climate is calling for, and the person who has answered that call is Jon Hellander.
