The Morgan girls Basketball team played the girls from Grantsville high on Tuesday Jan 11th. in Trojan gym. In a totally dominating performance from start to finish, the Lady Trojans destroyed the visitors by a score of 83-15. Since Grantsvilles’ school was divided by the opening of Stansbury High 2 years ago, the girls basketball team has really struggled, and Tuesday was no different. The Lady Trojans came flying out of the gates with a full court press that essentially took Grantsville out of the game in the first quarter. Morgan opened up a 28-2 advantage in the first 8 minutes, limiting Grantsville to only few shots, while forcing a ton of turnovers. Senior sharp-shooter Shaelee Pentz got things rolling with a layup off the opening tip. Senior Becca Rees, seeing her first game action back from a torn ACL on Dec. 17th, hit back to back shots with a nice running layup on an assist from Senior Chelsey Stegelmeier, and would then follow with a mid-range jumper from the right side for a quick 6-0 lead. The Lady Trojans were on fire on defense, and the few times that the visitors were able to get the ball past half-court, they faced a swarming Trojan defense that did not give up any easy shots or passes. The second quarter was much of the same. Early on, Kelsey Henry hit a layup, and Freshman Rashel Blazzard connected on a 3 pointer, Rees stole the ball and fed Senior Ashley Garfield for a layup, and Blazzard hit another jumper. When Rachael Johnson hit a layup, the score was up to 41-4. The Trojans would go into half-time leading 45-4. The Trojans kept up the defensive intensity in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Cowgirls 29-5. Spud Garfield would explode for 12 points in the quarter on an array of jumpers and layups. The Trojans bench played the 4th quarter, with Junior Kenzy Davis, Sophomore Keirsha Dickson, and Freshman McKenzie Schenk hitting 2 point buckets, and Junior Whitney Morgan hitting 3 free throws. The Lady Trojans dominated the stats, making 35-62 shots for 56.5% shooting, and held the Cowgirls to 6-33 shooting for 18.2%. Morgan pulled down 33 rebounds (14 offensive) to 16 (4 offensive) for Grantsville. Morgan passed off for 29 assists, had 33 steals and forced a whopping 44 turnovers.
