Information Literacy

Currently students live as well as learn in a world that has been profoundly transformed by the immediate availability of immense stores of information in an array of formats. One form of literacy that is important to the success of Morgan County School District students is Information Literacy. Information literacy can be defined as knowing when and why you need information, where to find it, how to evaluate it, and how to use and communicate it in an appropriate manner. Information literacy forms the basis for life-long learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education and life. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning. Information literacy can be thought of as a set of skills that require an individual to: Recognize when information is needed Formulate questions based on information needs Identify potential sources of information Locate and access information efficiently and effectively Determine accuracy and relevance of information Distinguish among fact, point-of-view, and opinion Use information accurately and creatively Produce and communicate information and ideas in appropriate formats Students routinely encounter vast amounts of information that has been carefully collected and arranged for them as part of their academic experience in school, but we are also preparing our students to be life-long learners and consumers of information. We must prepare students to become skillful users, consumers, and producers of information from a range of sources and formats so that they may thrive personally and economically in this information-technology age. As a learning community we want students to flourish and become active and creative locators, evaluators, and users of information to assist them in solving problems and to satisfying their own curiosity in subjects of interest to them. It is our hope that with the acquisition of these skills the students of Morgan County School District will become life-long learners who will achieve personal satisfaction and contribute responsibly and productively to our community and society. As a district we strive to provide certified, professionally trained, faculty members to assist students in acquiring the needed information literacy skills that will support them with their personal dreams and career aspirations.
