Snow Storm Causes Major Pileup and One Fatality

Sat. Nov. 5, Deputy Peay was on the scene for 8 hours to assist in the wrecks that took place on I-84 in the canyon heading west bound. The wrecks happened about 6:30 A.M. when a semi jack knifed on the bridge due to icy road conditions. This caused a chain reaction involving 27 vehicles and 5 semi trucks wrecking. I-84 East bound was shut off to allow emergency vehicles to the scene. One fatality came from the wreck as a man driving the semi, had somehow gotten out of his vehicle ,and fell 100 feet to the tracks below. Two cars caught on fire as well. The canyon was shut down for the majority of the day, and traffic was geared around trappers loop and through Ogden Canyon, which also had it’s own set of accidents, so some travelers had to go up through North Ogden Pass. UTA sent busses to pick up travelers in to Ogden to get them out of the cold temperatures. Ogden Regional Hospital also set up a station for victims, which included two who were in critical condition. With the first real icy road conditions of the season this accident reminds all of us to slow down and take the precautions when driving in wintery conditions.
