Although the Morgan County Council prepared an offer to purchase the former bus garage property on State Street, the Morgan County School Board decided to accept another offer from a commercial entity. The 1-acre commercial property at 38 N. South State Street was listed with a $300,000 price tag. The property includes 9,880 square feet of enclosed buildings with 16-foot overhead bay doors. School board officials said the commercial offer from Blain Smith, with Basics Incorporated, matched the county’s undisclosed offer. Smith offered $250,000 in cash. The buyer is an owner of a reputable business that serves several locations in Northern Utah and he is a resident of Morgan County, Superintendent Ken Adams said in a letter to the county. The board had received correspondence from business leaders encouraging them to consider the need for expanded commercial properties along State Street. These individuals cited the limited space available along State Street and the urgency in increasing the business and industrial tax base in our county. The property is sandwiched between four other enterprises, some of which are looking to expand their parking facilities and perhaps their building footprint. He said the desire to increase business and tax base in the county was the major premise for the school board’s decision. This was a difficult task for the board. This decision came as a result of concentrated debate and thought. I appreciate the county, Superintendent Ken Adams said. We have come to the conclusion it is best the more business we have in our community, to get enterprises in to generate revenue the city, county and schools need to operate. Adams said the board hopes that the property will develop into a thriving commercial area in the future.
