Professional Learning Communities moving forward

Teachers and administrators across the district are working together in enhancing student learning in all schools. Small groups of educators are meeting each Wednesday, focusing their attention on best practices and remediation strategies for students under their care. For example, the Morgan Middle School sixth grade team spent their time on Sept. 19 reviewing unit outlines and individual lesson plans. They also addressed ways to add enrichments to student learning at the conclusion of specific units of study. At Morgan High School the math department is coordinating not only specific areas of study such as Math I and Math II, but is looking at ways to tie all levels of math instruction into a blended 4-year plan of instruction. Discussion is held on specific interventions for students who may be struggling. Grade level teams at Morgan Elementary School and Mountain Green Elementary School follow specific agendas that cover all academic areas and allow time for collaboration and planning of future instruction. Recently, the reading team from Morgan Elementary traveled to Mountain Green to assist their new reading teacher with testing and planning. Building administrators report PLCs are making a positive difference in the learning climate at their schools and students are receiving more focused and personal instruction when needed. At Morgan High School and Morgan Middle School, students and parents are provided a one-hour consultation time when they can meet with specific teachers and receive extra tutoring and help. According to Morgan High Principal Wade Murdock, a handful of students that have struggled in the past with courses such as math and English are actually doing better and maintaining passing grades. Principal Terry Allen reports similar improvements at the middle school in student performance. Both schools conduct PLCs from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. and teacher consultation from 8:20 to 9:20 a.m. on Wednesdays. The elementary schools conduct PLCs on Wednesday afternoons, followed by individual teacher planning time.
