Anniversary – Alan and Betty Jan Murphy

Alan and Betty Jan Murphy will have been married 50 years on Dec.19. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple in 1962. Both were students at Weber State College at the time. They celebrated their anniversary earlier this year by going on a Caribbean Cruise and spending time at the Bryce Canyon Lodge. Upon Alan’s graduation in the field of mechanical engineering, the couple left Utah for employment with the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington. Alan joined the IBM Corporation in 1967 and the couple moved to San Jose, California and eventually to Tucson, Arizona. During that time six children were born. Lon (Heidi) Murphy, Trent (Lisa) Murphy, Troy Murphy, Lee (Chandelle) Murphy, Lynnette (Peter) Kersten, and Mandi Murphy (deceased). They have 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. After the children were grown, Betty Jan graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in education. She taught elementary school for 10 years then went back to school for a library science endorsement. She worked for several years as a school librarian. After an absence of 44 years, the couple returned to Utah and bought a home in Morgan. They love the atmosphere of the small town and are involved in many church and community activities. Alan keeps 26 computers running at the Family History Center. He serves as a stake auditor and high priest secretary. Betty Jan is an organist in the Morgan 7th ward and also accompanies the children’s singing in Primary. She sings in the Community Choir and is an officer in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers South Morgan Camp and in the Beta Literary Club. The couple loves to hike in the mountains of Utah and have enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing for 21 years. They look forward to many more years in the friendly community of Morgan.
