Jazz band earns top scores at region

After months of practicing, the Morgan High Jazz Band was able to show off their skills, play some great music and take home top honors at the Region Jazz Festival. Held Wednesday, March 6 at Ben Lomond High, MHS band members played songs such as State Street Stomp, Mambo Hot and All Night Rain to the approval and top scores of the judges. In band competitions the highest ratings given are excellent and superior marks. Morgan High Jazz band was scored very highly, taking both excellent and superior ratings for their music and ultimately coming out on top. Being judged on skills such as general musicality, style, intonation and improvisation, MHS band students gave it their all not only individually but as a team. Band member Cameron Gualco loves being a part of the Morgan High Jazz Band, where he has made such good friends, even going so far as to calling them his second family. He shares, what most don’t understand is that band is just as much of a team sport as an individual sport, and that is why it’s so great. Jazz bands are typically smaller than your regular concert bands and put a big focus on rhythm and harmony. This emphasis makes it very important that each player does his or her part and does it well. Employing more of your brass instruments such as trumpets, trombones and saxophones, jazz is more a swing style, letting a lot of feeling and groove come into play. Director of the MHS Jazz Band, Chad McLean, is excited to work with such a talented group of students. The type of music they play can be a little trickier, with a greater level of skill involved and takes a lot of practice and dedication. But the band students’ hard work has paid off. Students participating in this year’s MHS Jazz band include: Brandon Wheelwright, Tasha Romero, Cason Bennett, Jonathon Floyd, Tyler Payne, Zach Holman, Layton Loucks, Blaine Curfew, Jeremy Lucas, Leif Lofgreen, Kaleb Schlichte, Kyle Hall, Ben Colvin, Josh Malin, Tyler Dean, Cameron Gualco and TJ Hatch. Save the date for an upcoming Jazz Band Dance Fundraiser.
