Today is your 90th birthday Ò what a beautiful day this is. Your family is so excited to help you celebrate this wonderful milestone. We are celebrating Lucille’s birthday with an open house Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1-2 p.m. at the Morgan LDS Rock Church in Morgan. We invite friends and family to come join in this celebration by bringing only Happy Birthday wishes and good memories. No gifts are necessary. Our celebration with the family will continue on Oct. 6, but we will be going to the Grand America Hotel for Sunday brunch Ò a tradition that we all look forward to. Lucille Bates Sommers was born in Plain City, Utah, Oct. 4, 1923. She is the daughter of Dora and T.R. Bates. She is the eighth of nine children, moving to Morgan when she was 9 years old. She attended school in Morgan and graduated in 1941. While in high school she was very active in the band, playing clarinet, and was also in drama. She married John J. Sommers during World War II in Brownwood, Texas. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in January 1969. While her husband was employed by the cement plant, they lived in Devil’s Slide for a few years. He was then transferred to Trident, Montana, where they lived for 13 years before returning to Morgan, where they built a new home she still lives in today. During World War II, Lucille worked at the Defense Depot of Ogden until her husband returned from the war. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years. When her children were all in school, she started working as a secretary for the school. After moving to Morgan she worked for The Morgan County News and then worked for the USU Extension Office for over 20 years as their secretary, from where she retired. She loved her job. She has always been an active and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many positions in her wards and stake. She has a beautiful singing voice and lead the music for many years in many church organizations. Her husband passed away February 20, 1990. She continues to be active and loves to travel, shop, have family parties, play games, put puzzles together, do yard work, sew and much, much more. Lucille has 13 grandchildren and her posterity adds up to over 60 and still counting. Her children are: Joanne and Steve Hill of Clearfield; John and Kristine Sommers of Morgan; and Debby and John Wilkinson of Morgan. Mom says that of all she has done, her best job of all was and is being a wife, housewife and mother. We as a family wish you the happiest 90th birthday! Thanks you for being such a positive person, always caring and loving us all. You are truly a perfect example of Christ-like love and we are so proud to call you mom, grandma and great grandma.
