Local youth earn Scouting awards

Unit 576 (consisting of the Troop, Team and Crew of the Highlands Ward in Mountain Green, Morgan North Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) conducted their combined Eagle Scout Court of Honor with their normal Court of Honor at the amphitheater behind the Highlands Church Building on May 16 . Sammy Winn, first class Scout in the Troop, conducted and the flag ceremony was performed by the Troop’s 11-year-old patrol under the direction of Ethan Davis. Charles Hicks Kane, affectionately nicknamed Chucko, received his Eagle Rank advancement. Sid Creager, first counselor in the bishopric, opened the Eagle Court of Honor by inviting all Eagle Scouts present to sit in the Eagle’s Nest. One of the evening’s highlights was a live eagle demonstration with Liberty the eagle (presented by Steve Chindgren from the Hogle Zoo). Outstanding personal traits of the Scout Law that Chucko has demonstrated in his scouting career were highlighted by his mother, Kim Kane, and his grandfather, Ken Hicks. Their comments demonstrated how Chucko lives the Scout Law and exemplifies the characteristics of an Eagle Scout. Sid Creager then presented Chucko his Eagle rank and had Chucko repeat the Eagle Pledge. Under the direction of Andre Malan, young men’s president and crew advisor, the Eagle Challenge was given by Eagle scouters Scott Standing, Aaron Haslam, Jake Kane and Tyler Trantham. Sammy Winn then opened the regular Court of Honor, turning the time over to Varsity Scout Coach Rick Barnes for the team awards. Cody Standing received the Denali Award and KC Broadhead received his life rank advancement. Twelve Varsity Athletic Pins, Varsity Letter and several merit badges were also presented. Time was then given to Carl Hipwell, Scout master, and Mike and Kellie Webster, assistant Scout masters for the 11- year-old patrol to present the troop awards. Hunter Davis received his Life rank advancement; Sammy Winn received his first and second Class Rank Advancements and Ethan Davis, Chase Lane, Payton Moake and Jackson Sather received their Scout ranks. A video presentation I AM AMERICA, a patriotic hymn sung by Todd Allen Herendeen, was presented by Aaron Haslam. Several damaged American flags were then retired by burning under the direction of Carl Hipwell. Each flag was handled by a Scout and his father or grandfather with the flag commemorating a fallen military service member during war. It was a very patriotic conclusion for a well attended court of honor ceremony for our deserving Venturers, Varsity and Boy Scouts. Opening and closing prayers for the combined awards ceremonies were given by Dale Hicks, Chucko’s Grandmother and Nathan Kane, Chucko’s Father.
