Morgan High School Lady Trojans take two over the break


After a snowy, wintery ride to Mount Pleasant last Tuesday, the Lady Trojans basketball team took to the court and heated things up with three wins over the North Sanpete Hawks. The varsity won their game 60-43 as Brookelyn Hurlbut hit 18 points, going 7-14 from the field and 4-5 from the foul line to lead Morgan. After building a 19-11 lead after the first quarter, the Lady Trojans outscored the Hawks 17-9 in the second period to take a 36-20 advantage into the locker room. In the second half, Morgan only outscored North Sanpete by one, but held on for the 17-point victory.
Seniors Kate Blazzard and Catherine Klein both scored 12 points for the Lady Trojans and Morgan Cragun added eight. Marcie Stapley contributed four points and five rebounds, with Hurlbut grabbing seven boards, Blazzard dishing out seven assists and Cragun tallying five steals.
Strong second half gives sophomores 42-29 victory
The sophomore team fell behind early, but ratcheted up their level of play in the second half to outscore the Hawks 24-9 to take the 42-29 victory. Down 9-12 after one quarter, Morgan came within two before the half closed 18-20. The Lady Trojans held North Sanpete to two points in the third period while they scored 13 to take a 31-22 score into the final quarter. Morgan finished the game well and won by 13 points.
Kayden Jorgensen had a game-high 14 points followed by Jalyn Van Dyke’s 11. Baylee Loertscher netted seven and Alex Brooks added four, going 4-4 from the foul line. Craylin Toone, Paige Gleason and Brooke Loertscher each scored a two-point field goal to finish the scoring. Loertscher had a game-high nine rebounds, Van Dyke added seven and Gleason six. Brooks stole the ball four times with Gleason and Meagan Matthews each recording three steals.
Freshman score big win 39-18
Morgan played 11 freshmen against North Sanpete and earned a team victory 39-18 over the Hawks. A big first-quarter and third-quarter defensive shut out of the Hawks propelled the freshman team to the 19-point victory. Morgan led 12-4 after the first quarter and built their lead by two more in the second period, 19-9. Strong defense from the Lady Trojans held North Sanpete scoreless in the third quarter as the Morgan offense generated 14 more points. Although the Hawks outscored Morgan by three in the final period, the Lady Trojans lead cushioned them to take the win.
Brooks topped all scorers with 17 points going 8-13 from the field and 1-1 from the line. Matthews and Anna Nye each added six points while Elizabeth Watt and Taylor Polad tallied four points each. McKell Jensen finished the scoring with a field goal for two. Jenna Pierce topped the rebounds with seven while Brooks and Matthews each added four. McKell Jensen led with three assists. As a team, Morgan shot 83 percent from the free-throw line with Watt and Brooks going 100 percent from the line on the night.
Lady Trojans Down 4A Hillcrest 66-42
Monday night following Christmas, the Lady Trojans took to the court at home to meet the Hillcrest Huskies, who were visiting from Midvale. Morgan jumped on their visitors early, outscoring them 18-5 in the first period. Hillcrest battled through the second period and matched Morgan’s 14 points to find themselves down 32-19 at the half. The Lady Trojans exploded in the third period for 21 points and held the Huskies to only eight to enter the fourth period up 53-27. Morgan finished out the game well and earned the 24-point win 66-42, bringing their season record to 8-1.
Kate Blazzard and Brookelyn Hurlbut both scored 18 points. Marcie Stapley added nine and Jalyn Van Dyke contributed seven. Morgan Cragun tallied six with Jaci Jensen netting four. Catherine Klein and Maddie Pace completed the scoring with two points each.
Morgan plays at Tooele Jan. 5 and will open Region 11 play on Jan. 12 at home against Ben Lomond. Morgan’s Region 11 foes have played a number of games in the pre-season. Current records show Logan: 11-2; Juan Diego: 6-4; Bear River: 5-4; and Ben Lomond: 2-5.
Against common opponents, Region 11 teams have competed well. When playing Sky View, Morgan won 51-49 and Logan won 63-62, but Bear River lost 52-71. Mountain Crest beat both Morgan 55-46 and Juan Diego 64-59, but lost to Logan 35-37. Look for some exciting games when these teams face each other beginning in January and continuing through February to the state tournament match ups!
