Girls’ tennis 2-2 in region play

In a tough Region 11 field, the Lady Trojans’ tennis team stands at 2-2 on the season after suffering losses to Ridgeline 0-5 and Logan 2-3, but bouncing back last week and beating Ben Lomond 5-0 and Juan Diego 4-1.

Ben Lomond

Against Ben Lomond in Ogden, Morgan’s first doubles team of Shealee Calder and McCall Reid won 6-4, 6-3 with second doubles’ team, Sierra Wilkinson and Addy Wilson, also getting the win 6-0, 6-2.  Sage Earl, first singles, took her match 6-0, 6-0 while Grace Ericson won 6-2, 6-3. At third singles, Lauren Hadley went three sets to defeat her opponent, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Juan Diego

In Draper, the Lady Trojans played several three set matches to come away with the 4-1 victory over Juan Diego.  In first singles, Earl went three sets to beat Lauren Sorge 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (1). Ericson, at second singles, took care of Reagan Sorge in two, 6-3, 6-2.  Hadley also went three sets, but fell to Sami Howa 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

In the doubles matches, Calder and Reid played three sets before securing the victory over the Soaring Eagle first doubles’ team, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.  Wilkinson and Wilson only needed two sets to put down the Juan Diego second doubles’ team 6-2, 6-2.

In Morgan’s opening match against Bonneville, Morgan’s had three singles matches go three sets.  “We had some great matches against Bonneville for our first match of the season.  Grace’s and Lauren’s matches were so close. Lauren fought hard and played a three-hour match, falling short in the third set tie breaker.  We also had two other exciting three-set matches,” Coach Katherine Hadley reported.

Sage Earl won her first singles match 6-2, 6-4 while Grace Ericson lost 7-6 (5), 6-4.  Lauren Hadley fell just short in her marathon match 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5.  In doubles, Shealee Calder and McCall Reid won their first double match in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, with Sierra Wilkinson and Addy Wilson losing at second doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

In the junior varsity matches, Sheradyn Nelson and Emily Wilson went three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, but fell to Bonneville.  Erin Bartol and Ashley McMillan were Morgan’s only JV players to win their match, 8-2.  Cecily Clark and Annie Rowlan played a close 8-5 match, losing in the end. Taylor Polad and Selina Fawson lost 8-1, as did Emily Carrigan and Tacey Durrant.

Morgan played Bear River at home Tuesday and traveled to Logan on Thursday. The Lady Trojans are already halfway through their Region 11 schedule, having played Logan for the second time this season on Thursday.  They will travel to Ridgeline Sept. 13 and Ben Lomond will come to Morgan Sept. 15.  Your final chance to see the Lady Trojans play tennis this season will be Sept. 20, when Juan Diego comes to Morgan.
