MHS Wrestlers shine at Reno

Four chosen for All-Star Duals

Morgan wrestled at Ridgeline on Thursday, Jan. 5; Juan Diego on Tuesday, Jan. 10; Juab on Wednesday, Jan. 11; and they will compete in the Bobcat Brawl Jan. 13-14 at Sky View High School in Cache Valley.  Don’t miss Morgan’s final home meet and Senior Night on Jan. 18, when the Trojans take on Bear River!

Reno Tournament of Champions

Four Morgan High wrestlers qualified to compete in the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 16-17, 2016.  Owen Pentz, Carlos Nava, Antonio Nava and Chase Trussell traveled to Reno with Coach Dustin Rock to compete against some of the toughest competition in the Western United States and nation.

Pentz (182 lbs) earned first place in the tournament with a 6-2 win by decision in the championship bout over Ritchie Heywood of Wasatch. Competing in a field of 50 wrestlers, Pentz pinned his first four opponents and won his semifinal match 5-1 to advance to the championship match.

Antonio Nava (138 lbs), competing in one of the toughest brackets of the tournament, won his first two rounds by fall before losing by decision 5-3.  Antonio won his first consolation match by major decision 10-2 before he lost a 6-0 decision to end his tournament just out of the medal contention.

Carola Nava (132 lbs) pinned his first three opponents to earn a berth in the quarterfinal match.  Nava lost to Zak Kohler of Wasatch in the quarterfinals, but then won his next consolation match by decision 11-4.  He fell in the consolation semis by major decision 12-3 before rebounding to win the seventh-place match by fall (2:15).

Trussell (220 lbs) lost his opening match by decision and came back to win his next bout by fall.  He then fell in a 4-1 decision to end his tournament earlier than hoped.

UVU All-Star Duals

Four Morgan wrestlers were chosen to represent the 3A classification in the Utah Valley University All-Star Duals on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at UVU in Orem. “It is an honor to be chosen to be an All-Star and represent the 3A team,” Coach Dustin Rock remarked. “I am proud of our four wrestlers, Owen Pentz, Jarret Jorgensen, Carlos Nava, and Chase Trussell, who earned this distinction.”

In the duals, each wrestler faces an All-Star from another classification.  Jorgensen, a freshman, faced off against Quenton Mortimer of 4A Maple Mountain in the 113 lbs bout.  Mortimer won the match by fall in 2:40.  In the 220 lb match up of Morgan’s Trussell and 5A Pleasant Grove’s Brandon Closson, Trussell came up one point short as he lost by decision 3-2.  Carlos Nava, wrestling for the wildcard team at 132 lbs, fell to Zak Kohler of 4A Wasatch by decision 8-2.

Morgan’s final All-Star, Owen Pentz, was unable to wrestle in the dual.  The night before the event Pentz had his appendix removed and will be out of wrestling for four weeks.  “If there was any way Owen could have wrestled, he would have,” his mom Krissy Pentz shared. “He was really looking forward to wrestling in the All-Star Dual.”

Jody Warren Duals

Morgan participated in the Jody Warren Duals at Weber High Dec. 16-17.  The varsity took sixth place and the JV earned seventh.  Four of Morgan’s varsity wrestlers were participating in the Reno Tournament of Champions.  This gave four JV wrestlers an opportunity to step up and wrestle varsity, but also left a few open spots on the JV roster.

Senior McKay Belinski (160 lbs) had the best record for the varsity.  He pinned two opponents, won three by decision, one by tech fall and one by forfeit.  His 8-7 win by decision over Fremont was his closest match.

Fellow senior Alex McFarland (170 lbs) won six of his seven bouts, losing to Star Valley by decision 7-1.  Junior Chris Payne (106 lbs) and freshman Jarrett Jorgensen (113 lbs) were also 6-1 on the day; both were bested by Fremont wrestlers. Dillon Petty (285lbs) and Weston Stegelmeier (220lbs) both came away with three wins in matches and earned points in three matches as other teams forfeited.  Conley Breshears (195 lbs) and Jairo Lopez (120 lbs) each won two matches, with Taylor Bearnson (126 lbs) and Chase Peterson (182 lbs) each recording a single victory at the tournament.

The members of the JV team also each wrestled seven matches.  Hayden Stuart won six of his seven bouts, only losing to Fremont.  Nathan Petersen and Jess Malan earned 5-2 records, with Peterson falling to Tooele and Bear River and Malan taking losses in bouts with Copper Hills and Sky View.  Freshmen Joseph Mecham and Brennan Campbell both came away with more victories than defeats.

JV team results:  Mecham (106 lbs) 4-3; Montana Cragun (113 lbs) 1-1 (moved up to varsity); Campbell (132 lbs) 4-3; Tom Howard (145 lbs) 3-4; Petersen (160 lbs) 5-2; Stuart (170 lbs) 6-1; Malan (182 lbs) 5-2; and Jordan Storey (195 lbs) 3-4.
