Morgan wrestled their final region match on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Logan. The team is now preparing for the 3A Divisional Tournament on Feb. 3-4 at Tooele High School. The top eight wrestlers in each weight at the divisional tournament will advance to the 3A State Championship Meet to be held Feb. 10-11 at Utah Valley University in Orem.
MHS competed well at the prestigious Rockwell Rumble last weekend with the varsity placing 17th out of 76 teams from several states. Three wrestlers placed among the top eight to get on the podium in their weight class. Junior Chase Trussell (220 lbs) lost to Bear River in the quarter finals, and then wrestled through the consolation bracket to claim third place. Senior Carlos Nava (132 lbs) earned sixth place and freshman Jarrett Jorgensen (106 lbs) garnered eighth.
“I was very pleased with how we ended up at the Rumble as a team. With Owen out injured and Carlos not feeling his best, I was more than pleased at the number of wrestlers who scored points for the team. We had two JV wrestlers place this year and none last year. We are showing a depth that we haven’t had in the past,” Coach Dustin Rock explained.
JV wrestler Hayden Stuart (170 lbs) captured third place. In the consolation final, he pinned Fremont wrestler, Rylan Musselman in 1:16. The day before in the third championship round, Musselman had pinned Stuart (4:30) for his only loss in tournament. Stuart ended the tournament with one loss and seven wins by fall with all of his pins coming in less than 1:16. Weston Stegelmeier (220 lbs) lost in the semifinals and ended up placing sixth overall.
On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Morgan wrestled Bear River in their final home match of the season. The Trojans honored their six graduating senior wrestlers—Carlitos Nava (132 lbs), Kade Crowther (152 lbs), McKay Belinski (160 lbs), Alex Mc Farland (170 lbs), Owen Pentz (182 lbs) and Conley Breshears (195 lbs)—and graduating wrestling manager, Kristin Webster. Unfortunately, Morgan was unable to pull out the win for the seniors and fell to the Bears, 43-18. Chris Payne (106 lbs) won his match by decision 11-9 over top-ranked Zachery Bingham, and Jarrett Jorgensen (113 lbs) was the only Trojan to pin his Bear River opponent. Chase Trussell (220 lbs) muscled out a 1-0 win by decision and Owen Pentz (182 lbs), returning from his appendicitis, got the win by forfeit.
On the JV mat, Joseph Mecham (106 lbs) earned the 14-10 win by decision to start the night off and Montana Cragun (113 lbs) got the tech fall (19-4 3:24). Hayden Stuart (170 lbs) pinned his Bear River foe in 1:06.
“We wrestled tough against Bear River and lost several matches by a point or two. It was a good match for late in the season and we got some valuable mat time,” Coach Rock summarized.
